As part of the research underpinning an Honours dissertation a study of the agencies providing European information in Scotland was carried out in the spring of 1994. The aims of this study were to investigate the nature of the services offered by the existing agencies, to consider their accessibility and geographic spread, and to determine the extent of the interaction which took place between these agencies. The study sought to provide a broad picture of provision across a physically large geographic area. Given the relatively few agencies involved, visits were made to each and structured interviews were carried out with staff.

Every electronics manufacturing company wants to know how effective its process is compared with industry leaders; to date this has not been possible. From an initial concept by Bob Willis, Chairman of the SMART Group, a data collection package has been jointly developed in conjunction with the Surface Mount Club.

“Social”, in terms of EC policy, covers areas from “youth” to health and safety. This, and the many non‐EC organisations involved in this field, means that any comprehensive overview of published material on the social dimension to Europe would fill a whole issue of Aslib Proceedings!

Metabrasive hosts foundry executives The Bilston based steel shot and grit manufacturers, Metabrasive Ltd, played host to a party of senior foundry executives from the Southern England and West Midlands Branches of the British Foundry Association (BFA) last month. The party was led by Mr. Norman Gledhill, the newly appointed director of the Association, and included Mr. W. M. Sutherland, chief executive of METCON which represents a group of trade associations including BFA, in areas of trade affairs, labour relations and training.
