Stretching over two years this vocational training course, held in Germany, includes personnel, marketing, law and accounting. Concludes that Hoechst will seek to expand this scheme throughout the UK.

As the World Wide Web continues its tremendous rate of development, providers of services on the web have difficult decisions to make regarding the deployment of new technologies: should they begin deployment of technologies such as HTML 4.0, CSS 2, Java, Dublin Core metadata, etc., or should they wait until the technologies mature? This paper describes the use of a web auditing/profiling robot utility known as WebWatch which can help service providers by providing information on the uptake of technologies within particular communities. A description of use of the WebWatch software within the UK Higher Education community is given, together with a discussion of the findings.

In the current era of intensified immigration enforcement and heightened risks of deportation even for long-term lawful permanent residents, citizenship has taken on a new meaning and greater importance. There is also growing evidence that citizenship denials in their various forms have become inextricably linked to immigration enforcement. Who is denied citizenship, why, and under what circumstances? This chapter begins to address these questions by developing a typology of citizenship denials and providing an empirical overview of each type of citizenship denial. Taken together, the typology of citizenship denials and the accompanying empirical overview illustrate the close connection between immigration enforcement and citizenship rights in the United States.

In 1989, British subsidiary Hoechst UK introduced five scholarship awards to school leavers, to attend the two‐year vocational training course at Hoechst AG in Germany. A brief description of the training scheme is included, which follows the West German vocational training scheme (Industriekaufmann) and combines learning at a State vocational training school with practical work experience in Hoechst. Three of the participants describe their reactions.

The management of autonomous, heterogeneous network resources and services provides new challenges which libraries are now addressing. This paper outlines an approach based on the construction of broker services which mediate access to resources. It outlines a framework – the MODELS Information Architecture – for thinking about the components of broker services and their logical arrangement. It describes several development projects and services which show how brokers are developing. It uses examples drawn from the serials environment to describe some of the issues. Technologists understand that they must build more stable and unobtrusive media. They must establish more coherent contexts into which the technology may disappear.

This article sets out to explore the role of clothes as compensatory consumption in men’s lives from an experimental perspective, presenting preliminary findings from the current research based on case studies of three adult males. This is part of a much larger study into compensatory consumption currently being undertaken by the author. The article examines the men’s relationship with fashion and their shopping behaviour in the light of current literature on fashion, identity and consumer behaviour. The implications for fashion retailing are considered and proposals for future research put forward.

Nobody concerned with political economy can neglect the history of economic doctrines. Structural changes in the economy and society influence economic thinking and, conversely, innovative thought structures and attitudes have almost always forced economic institutions and modes of behaviour to adjust. We learn from the history of economic doctrines how a particular theory emerged and whether, and in which environment, it could take root. We can see how a school evolves out of a common methodological perception and similar techniques of analysis, and how it has to establish itself. The interaction between unresolved problems on the one hand, and the search for better solutions or explanations on the other, leads to a change in paradigma and to the formation of new lines of reasoning. As long as the real world is subject to progress and change scientific search for explanation must out of necessity continue.

The development of performance indicators specifically within and for polytechnic libraries is reviewed. A framework of library activities is derived on which performance measurement might be based and six indicators are identified. The practical applicability of the framework is considered in relation to polytechnic libraries and to both institutional and library aims and objectives.

THE Reference Department of Paisley Central Library today occupies the room which was the original Public Library built in 1870 and opened to the public in April 1871. Since that date two extensions to the building have taken place. The first, in 1882, provided a separate room for both Reference and Lending libraries; the second, opened in 1938, provided a new Children's Department. Together with the original cost of the building, these extensions were entirely financed by Sir Peter Coats, James Coats of Auchendrane and Daniel Coats respectively. The people of Paisley indeed owe much to this one family, whose generosity was great. They not only provided the capital required but continued to donate many useful and often extremely valuable works of reference over the many years that followed. In 1975 Paisley Library was incorporated in the new Renfrew District library service.
