Abstract
Following September 11, 2001, spirituality has become an even more important issue. Research projects have been done to address the need of spirituality in the corporate workplace. The issue of spirituality in the academic workplace is even more vital since it is from within the higher academic institutions that the leaders of tomorrow emerge. Yet, little has been done. This research is an attempt to fulfill this need. This project examined the spirituality of professors and the spiritual culture found in a private secular college, a private Christian college and a state university, all located in southern California. The design of the research was based on the work of Ian Mitroff and Parker Palmer. The results showed that there was a difference in the spiritual culture between these three campuses and that the spirituality of the professors was a reflection of the spiritual culture found on the campuses.

Describes the development and use of GRIP, an online information storage and retrieval system for personal indexes, using a Hewlett Packard 2100S minicomputer. Users are able to compile their own files consisting of completely unformatted records, and searching is carried out online from remote terminals often in the user's own laboratory. Abstract
We identify the key social and political forces that brought about the Self Managed Attendant Service Direct Funding Pilot (SMAS-DFP). Attendant Services are services for people with physical disabilities (PWD) to assist with daily activities. Direct Funding means that individuals obtain funds through direct funding mechanisms and/or through third parties. Self-direction refers to consumers who know their attendant service needs and can instruct workers to meet these needs. Self-management refers to (PWD) who are employers under the law and are legally responsible for hiring, training, scheduling and paying their attendants. Our analysis of the success of the SMAS-DFP is based on pre-conditions and facilitating elements. The pre-conditions were the: (1) existence of social movements; (2) precedents to direct funding programs; (3) prior experience with the governance of attendant services; and (4) government health reform. Five elements facilitated the SMASD-FP: (1) a clear vision by the community; (2) a core group of leaders; (3) supporters of the SMAS-DFP came from inside and outside of the community; and (4) supporters provided key resources to be used and to deal with barriers. PWD successfully led the pilot (1994–1997) and continue to administer the expanded government program (began 1998).

Abstract
Understanding of HRD in SMEs has frequently been based on impoverished research resulting from underdeveloped theory. This article argues for the potential offered to researching, understanding and practising HRD in small organisations, of taking a discourse perspective on organisation, learning and development. Through a comparative interpretation, from a traditional and a discourse perspective on HRD, of research material collected ethnographically in three small companies, the article aims to contribute to an approach which can deepen understanding of HRD in SMEs by combining three strands that have not generally been integrated: ideas from recent debates on what HRD comprises, perspectives on learning, and a discourse perspective on organisation. The implications for research indicate a need for methods that enable the study of HRD in action – the micro‐processes of development.

Abstract
Purpose
The analysis, carried out for this publication, concerned checking the nature of mating of gear wheels with different load conditions. The computation was made applying FEM in Abaqus 6.10-1 program and concerned spur gears in dual-power-path gears made of ABS. The same geometrical models, material parameters and boundary conditions were assumed for all the analysed stages of the computation. However, the values of torque transmitted from active wheels to passive wheel of the gearing were changed. The paper aims to discuss these issues.
Design/methodology/approach
Observing changes of stress levels for toothed wheel and pinions allows to state that for relatively low load values, bending stresses at tooth root change proportionally to the change of the applied load.
Findings
Values of contact stresses on mating teeth flanks were also defined for the most loaded part of the dual-power-path gearing, namely for a pinion. In case of contact stresses, it was observed that together with constant increase of torque value, the values of stresses change but the nature of these changes is not proportional to the applied load. Out of all the analysed variants, the most favourable, from the point of view of durability, was the situation in initial (theoretical) model with regular power division on all mating wheels.
Originality/value
Conclusions drawn as a result of numerical computation are helpful in defining the nature of work of dual-power-path gearing in different load conditions and will be compared to results of stand tests of the analysed gearing.
