Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce the analysis and performance of a hybrid multiple access scheme which combines interleave division multiple access (IDMA) and code division multiple access (CDMA), referred to as IDMA/CDMA. With experimentations, the scheme can achieve good performance with simple user ends for the system.

Design/methodology/approach

IDMA technique is employed as the uplink transmission and CDMA technique as the downlink transmission. The performance comparison of IDMA and IDMA/CDMA downlink is studied with Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the bit error rates. For IDMA/CDMA downlink, the signals are interleaved by random interleavers, spreaded by M‐sequence and orthogonal Gold sequence, respectively, and then transmitted over an AWGN with BPSK modulation. Moreover, a channel estimation approach for IDMA based on expectation maximization (EM) algorithm is also presented.

Findings

The multi‐user detection (MUD) algorithm in uplink IDMA systems is much simpler than that used in traditional CDMA systems. It is also well known that the orthogonal spreading codes in CDMA can effectively help suppress the MAI in the synchronized environments. But for the asynchronized application, the performance of CDMA systems will degrade due to the serious multiple user interference. According to traditional IDMA and orthogonal code division multiple access/IDMA signal detection algorithms, every UE has to detect all of the signals of other users for iterative detection. The advantages of IDMA and CDMA technologies can be utilized substantially.

Originality/value

The proposed hybrid multiple access scheme can achieve a very simple chip‐by‐chip iterative MUD strategy at base station, and the simplified receiving operation at UE. On the other hand, this paper also evaluates channel estimation approach for IDMA based on EM algorithm.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine different possible issues that can contribute to cost escalations in pharmaceutical capital projects and identify remedial measures to control them.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is supported by a detailed survey performed around some big pharmaceutical companies of Indian sub-continent. Various issues that lead to cost escalations of projects have been identified. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyzes have been applied to the feedback data.

Findings

The study derived and validated four prominent factors leading to cost escalations. The paper discusses these factors along with the remedies identified to control project cost. Convergent and discriminant validity have been well established for the model.

Research limitations/implications

The data needful for the study were collected from only four big pharmaceutical companies established in Southern India. Through frequent and elaborate interactions with senior project managers of those companies, it became possible to get a consolidated list of reasons that contribute to cost escalations in pharmaceutical projects. The list and the feedback data may be more exhaustive if some more companies would have been surveyed. Future research is committed to cover some more notable pharmaceutical companies both nationally and internationally and enhance the sample size. This would add more strength to the analysis and derive more consistent and validated results.

Practical implications

This study provides necessary support to the project people to analyze different issues that stand as hurdles for project success and enable them to look for remedies to resolve them. The results would help the project managers to enhance their awareness in controlling the project costs. The study stands as a stepping stone and a roadmap to embed further research in this direction.

Originality/value

Since several significant issues impact the progress of the projects, this work focussed on analyzing cost-related issues in projects; since there is meager research work done in the area of pharmaceutical project management, as an attempt to fill the research gap, this work carried out detailed analysis of different issues leading to cost escalations in pharmaceutical capital projects; factor analysis, including exploratory and confirmatory, has been applied to the data collected and several important factors derived and the measurement model well validated; the research work was done in close interaction with the project people working in four big Indian pharmaceutical companies and useful information was collected; in addition to generation of important factors from the factor analysis, the study was further extended to collect various remedies to mitigate the issues that lead to cost escalations; the research work has enough strength to act as a role model to motivate researchers and project people to further their research on other issues and also refine the present work.

Abstract

Purpose

The suggested work examines the latest developments such as the techniques employed for allocation of power, browser techniques, modern analysis and bandwidth efficiency of nonorthogonal multiple accesses (NOMA) in the network of 5G. Furthermore, the proposed work also illustrates the performance of NOMA when it is combined with various techniques of wireless communication namely network coding, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), space-time coding, collective communications, as well as many more. In the case of the MIMO system, the proposed research work specifically deals with a less complex recursive linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) multiuser detector along with NOMA (MIMO-NOMA); here the multiple-antenna base station (BS) and multiple single-antenna users interact with each other instantaneously. Although LMMSE is a linear detector with a low intricacy, it performs poorly in multiuser identification because of the incompatibility between LMMSE identification and multiuser decoding. Thus, to obtain a desirable iterative identification rate, the proposed research work presents matching constraints among the decoders and identifiers of MIMO-NOMA.

Design/methodology/approach

To improve the performance in 5G technologies as well as in cellular communication, the NOMA technique is employed and contemplated as one of the best methodologies for accessing radio. The above-stated technique offers several advantages such as enhanced spectrum performance in contrast to the high-capacity orthogonal multiple access (OMA) approach that is also known as orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). Code and power domain are some of the categories of the NOMA technique. The suggested research work mainly concentrates on the technique of NOMA, which is based on the power domain. This approach correspondingly makes use of superposition coding (SC) as well as successive interference cancellation (SIC) at source and recipient. For the fifth-generation applications, the network-level, as well as user-experienced data rate prerequisites, are successfully illustrated by various researchers.

Findings

The suggested combined methodology such as MIMO-NOMA demonstrates a synchronized iterative LMMSE system that can accomplish the optimized efficiency of symmetric MIMO NOMA with several users. To transmit the information from sender to the receiver, hybrid methodologies are confined to 2 × 2 as well as 4 × 4 antenna arrays, and thereby parameters such as PAPR, BER, SNR are analyzed and efficiency for various modulation strategies such as BPSK and QAMj (j should vary from 8,16,32,64) are computed.

Originality/value

The proposed hybrid MIMO-NOMA methodologies are synchronized in terms of iterative process for optimization of LMMSE that can accomplish the optimized efficiency of symmetric for several users under different noisy conditions. From the obtained simulated results, it is found, there are 18%, 23% 16%, and 8% improvement in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER), Least Minimum Mean Squared Error (LMMSE), Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR), and capacity of channel respectively for Binary Phase Shift Key (BPSK) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) modulation techniques.

Abstract

This paper discusses the status of information and communication technologies usage in Indian libraries with special reference to special libraries and the efforts made by various institutions to propagate e‐information products and services. It further discusses digitisation efforts in India at NISCAIR, New Delhi, IIITM, Kerala, C‐DAC Pune, and the Digital Library of India. In addition it incorporates details on major information systems in India (such as NISSAT)and major library networks in India (such as INFLIBNET, DELNET, CALIBNET etc.). Abstract

Purpose

Although integrated marketing communication (IMC) is generally accepted as the way forward by academics and practitioners, there is a shortage of research into the challenges that clients face in implementing the process, particularly in the UK. This paper aims to address these issues by examining how UK clients perceive the barriers to implementation, with reference to the conflict theory of decision-making and the social exchange theory from the change management literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a critical realism approach and collected data through an on-line questionnaire to an expert panel of UK clients, which generated some rich qualitative data. The experts were asked to comment on four statements developed from the literature which captured the main challenges identified in previous research.

Findings

The results indicate that UK clients are facing similar barriers to those evident in other countries more than a decade ago. Three main obstacles are identified. First, some clients still find IMC difficult to understand and therefore may avoid change because of the high level of risk involved. Second, marketing departments lack control or influence over other parts of the organisation, due in some cases to lack of representation at board level. Finally, agencies do not have a clear role in the implementation of IMC.

Originality/value

The paper is of value because it specifically investigates the UK client perspective, which is presently sparse in the literature and updates the knowledge on barriers to implementation. It underpins this discussion with reference to change management theories. The paper also examines the support being provided by industry bodies and questions their effectiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to link the denotation of healthy and health‐related consumer terms of traditional Dutch meal components to characteristics, ingredients and affective aspects of food products.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 344 respondents completed a questionnaire with propositions about product perception and health opinions. Distinct meal components of a traditional Dutch meal were chosen to make the research results applicable in product development.

Findings

A total of four clusters of consumers emerged: with an unconventional definition of health; with no interest in health; feeling healthy; and having health problems, with sample percentages of 21, 10, 50 and 18, respectively.

Originality/value

The study provides insight in the transformation (selection and formulation) of consumers' terminology related to health into attributes, ingredients and affective aspects of products for groups of consumers with a different definition of health.
