Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to expand upon policy implications of a recent study assessing adolescent mental health service contact and subsequent depression.
Design/methodology/approach
Review of related evidence from academic and grey literature.
Findings
Studies assessing the role of mental health services in reducing mental disorder during adolescence are sparse, and even prevalence figures for adolescent mental disorders are out-of-date. Adolescent mental health service contact rates are shown to fall concurrent with budgetary decreases. School-based counselling is highlighted as an important source of help that may be at risk of being cut. Increased training of General Practitioners and school counsellors is needed to improve efficiency in specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS).
Practical implications
Longitudinal studies of young people’s mental health should include mental health service usage and its relationship with subsequent mental health outcomes.
Social implications
Funding cuts to CAMHS must be avoided, school-based counselling must be protected, and service referrers should be better trained.
Originality/value
This paper highlights the need for increased CAMHS data, sustained funding, and improved training for this vital service.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to present an investigation into the variation of scan vector hatch rotation strategies in selective laser melting (SLM), focussing on how it effects density, surface roughness, tensile strength and residual stress.
Design/methodology/approach
First the optimum angle of hatch vector rotation is proposed by analysing the effect of different increment angles on distribution of scan vectors. Sectioning methods are then used to determine the effect that the chosen strategies have on the density of the parts. The top surface roughness was analysed using optical metrology, and the tensile properties were determined using uni-axial tensile testing. Finally, a novel multi-support deflection geometry was used to quantify the effects of rotation angles on residual stress.
Findings
The results of this research showed that the hatch rotation angle had little effect on the density, top surface roughness and strength of the parts. The greatest residual stress deflection was measured parallel to unidirectional scan vectors. The use of hatch rotations other than alternating 90° showed little benefit in lowering the magnitude of residual stresses. However, the use of rotation angles with a good suitability measure distributes stresses in all directions more evenly for certain part geometries.
Research limitations/implications
All samples produced in this work were made from commercially pure titanium, therefore care must be taken when applying these results to other materials.
Originality/value
This paper serves to increase the understanding of SLM scanning strategies and their effect on the properties of the material.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to offer exploration of pedagogic frailty as a framework to support professional development of university teachers in a personalised and discipline-sensitive way.
Design/methodology/approach
The method involves participants constructing a concept map for each dimension of the model. These maps must have high explanatory power to act as a frame for developing a personal narrative to support reflection on practice. This reflection starts from the academic’s current knowledge structure and provides a bespoke, individualised focus for further learning.
Findings
This conceptual paper is informed by case studies of academics’ interactions with the frailty model that have helped to refine it as a faculty development tool. This is clarified by providing explicit requirements of an “excellent” map, and places the reflective process within a learning theory that is aligned with the values that underpin the model.
Originality value
The type of rhizomatic learning that is supported by the model, in which there are no imposed learning outcomes or strictly delineated pathways to success, is particularly suited to support the professional development of more senior academics. This represents an innovative approach to faculty development.
