Abstract

Purpose

Allocation of individuals' resources among multiple goals is an increasingly prominent theoretical and practical issue. Despite several theoretical perspectives that highlight the potential role of affect in this resource allocation process, empirical work on the topic is quite limited with little focus on the activation dimension of affect. This study aimed to provide further insight into this issue.

Design

The current research explored the role of the activation dimension of affect in a multiple-goal environment. Specifically, 118 individuals participated in a 21-day longitudinal study in which they reported on affect and resource allocation related to two real-life goals.

Findings

Multilevel-modeling analyses indicated that activation positively relates to allocation of resources (effort, intended effort, and intended time devoted to a goal). The results also illustrate that task-related negative valence is a significant predictor for two of the three indicators of resource allocation (intended effort was the exception).

Value

This research informs theory and practice at the intersection of emotion and work motivation by investigating a relatively understudied dimension of affect and provides results that help clarify the role of affect during the pursuit of multiple, competing goals.

Abstract

EY's audit of German company Wirecard raises many questions about the quality of its audit. The scope and depth of the audit deficiencies have led some to call it: Germany's Enron. The authors review the facts of the case and raise broad-based questions that address EY's audit: what it did wrong, what other steps it might have taken to enhance the audit, and whether it can be characterized as a failed audit. The case provides learning objectives, implementation guidance, and answers to these questions. The authors believe that it can be used at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in courses dealing with accounting ethics, fraud in financial statements, and auditing.

Abstract

This chapter develops a productivity analysis of the US telecommunications industry using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. The study concerns itself with eight telecommunications companies. Output variables used are market price, return on equity, and debt equity ratio. The input variables are sales to profit, return on equity, and debt ratio to capital.

Abstract

For those who reside along the US/Mexico border, the border means everything and at the same time it means nothing. It is every juxtaposition imaginable: a challenge and an opportunity, a joining and a dividing, a clashing of two worlds and a constant flow of ideas, people, and goods. Bendito Infierno (Holy Hell) is an ethnographic narrative illustrating the complexity of the borderlands as perceived and experienced by migrants. It speaks to the perpetual contradiction of the US/Mexico borderlands as an agonizing terrain juxtaposed by the promise of opportunity. Revealingly, the piece highlights the agency displayed by forcefully displaced migrants amidst an oppressing political structure.

Abstract

This chapter assesses the operating units within electronic shopping stores with regard to their productivity. The methodology used to measure the productivity is data envelopment analysis (DEA). Two different linear programming model formulations of the DEA model are used. In the first linear programming model, the weights are applied to the inputs, with the outputs remaining the same. In the second model, weights are applied to the inputs, but the outputs are different.

Abstract

Historically, public and private sector enterprises have been viewed as existing on opposing ends of the performance measurement spectrum, due to seemingly incompatible worldviews. Private sector enterprises are traditionally viewed as profit-driven and focused on a return on investment paradigm, while public sector enterprises are seen as mission-oriented and answerable to a paradigm less focused on investment and more on improving enterprise capability. The authors propose that, in fact, these worldviews are not mutually exclusive, as private and public sector enterprises must both account for investment and mission concerns. In order to leverage real synergy to be gained from distinct but complementary viewpoints, a systemic approach to evaluating organization performance through the novel fusion of operational test and evaluation and multi-criteria decision analysis is developed. Use of this framework is demonstrated within an enterprise that involves consideration of public and private sector concerns. The authors hope that the approach proposed in this chapter will enable public and private sector enterprises to comprehensively address performance.

Abstract

This chapter develops a productivity analysis of the US pharmaceutical industry via Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). This study concerns itself with 16 US pharmaceutical companies. The output variables are profit margin, operating margin, return on assets, and return on equity. The input variables are corporate workers and market capital. Since negative data appear in DEA, a directional distance approach was applied.

Abstract

The contemporary workplace is characterized by transience: Organizational members frequently turn over and careers span multiple organizations. Consequently, workplace friendships that were once close become less close and intimate, that is they become peripheral and can deteriorate. While research has examined the benefits for employees who move on to new opportunities, less clear is how stayers, or employees who remain behind in the work setting, are affected. To understand stayers’ experiences and how they manage, we draw on theories of belongingess and to offer a three-part episodic process model, which explains how stayers’ engagement in the task and social domains are influenced. In doing so, we (1) present a dynamic view of the deterioration of dyadic relationships, highlighting how workplace relationships can change over time; (2) discuss both the depth and breadth of emotions involved for stayers; and (3) integrate a positive organizational scholarship perspective by considering both strength of friendships with other present coworkers and coping approaches of stayers as important boundary conditions, which can facilitate their recovery process. We draw attention to the broader implications of our theorizing for research on relationships and emotions, and practical implications for management.
