Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate the ways that human capital influences the strategic orientation variables entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and market orientation (MO), which ultimately leverage the firm performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia.
Design/methodology/approach
This study used a quantitative method with a total of 274 SMEs in the Regency of Gresik, East Java, Indonesia, as the observable population. Furthermore, the identified samples obtained through the random sampling technique were determined using the Slovin formula with 163 SMEs used for analysis. As the means of analysis, this study used a statistical approach by using PLS-SEM statistics from SmartPLS software. This analytical tool has been proven to be a robust statistical tool that has been used in many marketing studies.
Findings
This study found that human capital is a key determinant of EO and MO as strategic orientations of SMEs. Furthermore, this study highlighted that SMEs’ strategic orientations (i.e. EO and MO) provide a valuable thrust that leverages firm performance. Moreover, the role of human capital in leveraging firm performance was found to be significant with the role of the joint effect of EO and MO as mediator. This implies that human capital is not solely a single determinant that leverages SMEs’ performance.
Research limitations/implications
There are few aspects of limitations in this research that could be enhanced by other scholars in the discipline of entrepreneurship. First, the strategic orientation concept being indicated by EO and MO had yet to provide a comprehensive view of strategic orientation. Second, this research used samples that represent the traditional furniture cluster in East Java and had yet to explore other clusters such as food processing and services cluster which may be relevant to the context of SMEs in Indonesia.
Practical implications
As a practical implication, this study would benefit policymakers in Indonesia, such as the Ministry for Cooperatives and SMEs to provide assistance to SMEs to progressively nurture capacity-building through formal and informal education to leverage human capital. Moreover, it could benefit other relevant businesses, such as national banks in Indonesia whose interests are significant, especially in providing financial access to SMEs in Indonesia.
Social implications
The social implication of this research lay the focus on the suggestion by which SMEs must be able to optimize their capabilities by enhancing levels of human capital particularly for traditionally managed SMEs. The ability to survive external pressures for would be able to contribute to the social well-being of their society as many people are dependent heavily in the operation of the SMEs.
Originality/value
The significance of this study is twofold. Although the use of human capital as a determinant of firm performance has been discussed in the literature, few studies to date has sought to predict human capital with EO and MO as mediators of firm performance. Furthermore, the joint impact of EO and MO as a strategic orientation needs to be holistically explored and explained, particularly in an emerging economy context.

Abstract
Purpose
Scholars have emphasized intellectual capital’s importance for universities in obtaining competitive advantages and creating value. The purpose of this paper is to identify the influences of two components of intellectual capital, relational and human capital at the international level, and psychological capital on international orientation of academic entrepreneurs, and the mediating effects of international relational and human capital.
Design/methodology/approach
On the basis of a literature review, a theoretical model is proposed to explain the relationship between the studied variables. Our hypotheses are tested on a sample of 173 academic spin-offs of Spanish universities using bootstrapping methodology.
Findings
The results show that the international market relational capital and international human capital of academic entrepreneurs influence their international orientation, and that their psychological capital is directly, and indirectly, related to international orientation through international human capital and international market relational capital.
Practical implications
This study provides a better understanding of the antecedents of the international orientation of academic entrepreneurs, which would provide an important contribution to the literature on intellectual capital, academic entrepreneurship and internationalization. The achieved results highlight important implications for training of academic entrepreneurs and for managers and management teams of companies willing to enter, or even those already operating in, international markets.
Originality/value
In this study, the international orientation of academic entrepreneurs is explained through the psychological capital that is studied jointly with two components of intellectual capital, relational and human capital at the international level. Although some recent work has focused on the study of the internationalization of academic spin-off, this line of research is still incipient.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to examine the effect of green human capital readiness on business performance in the green economy era. This study also focuses on investigating whether the relationship is mediated by green market orientation and green supply chain management.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a quantitative study using the data of 182 manufacturing small and medium-sized enterprises in East Java, Indonesia. Data are collected using an online survey. A multiple mediation research framework is employed, and partial least squares structural equation modeling is used to test the hypotheses.
Findings
The findings demonstrate the following important results. First, green human capital readiness affects business performance. Second, green market orientation partially mediates the effect of green human capital readiness on business performance. Third, green supply chain management partially mediates the effect of green human capital readiness on business performance. Fourth, green market orientation and green supply chain management sequentially mediate the green human capital readiness-business performance relationship.
Research limitations/implications
This study limits its sample to the small and medium-sized enterprises in East Java, Indonesia. Thus, caution must be applied when generalizing to other types of organizations and different regions. The results confirm the resource-based view and sustainability theory in explaining the antecedents of business performance in the era of the green economy which are useful for future researchers and students who are interested in studying human capital, market orientation, supply chain management and business performance.
Practical implications
This study has the following practical implications. First, it implies that the owners/managers of small and medium-sized enterprises need to properly develop their green human capital readiness because they play a strategic role in driving green market orientation, improving green supply chain management and enhancing business performance. Second, it provides useful information to policymakers to make better decision-making in developing environmentally friendly companies.
Originality/value
This study is a response to calls for studies on the antecedents of business performance in the green economy era. It provides empirical evidence for the development of resource-based view and sustainability theory by employing the new construct of green human capital readiness, which has been rarely investigated in previous studies. It also employs a multiple mediation research framework that provides a more comprehensive understanding by including green market orientation and green supply chain management. It also provides empirical evidence in the research setting of small and medium-sized enterprises in Indonesia as an emerging market.

Abstract
This study explores whether a nation‐culture factor (national culture) or a worker‐type factor (organizational types of workers) has more powerful effects on various job‐related orientations of Japanese, US and Australian employees. Job‐related orientations were categorized into the following three: job‐performance orientation, human‐relation orientation, and safety‐maintenance orientation. A total of 212 Japanese, 187 American and 147 Australian workers participated in this research. The subjects were grouped into five different organizational types of workers. The cultures‐by‐types interaction failed to achieve significance on the combined dependent variables. The cultures (nation‐culture) variable indicated significant relationships with human‐relation orientation and safety‐maintenance orientation, and the types (worker‐type) variable showed an indication of significant relationships with job‐performance orientation.

India's emergence in the international business arena presents challenges to Western‐trained expatriate managers assigned there. These expatriates are familiar with management theories and practices based on value orientations very different from those in India. Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck's Value Orientations Framework is used to provide an overview of the different types of cultural values an expatriate manager will confront in Indian society. The impact of Indian values on various management practices, including team composition, leadership, motivation, and human resource management functions is also discussed It is hoped that this examination of the dominant value orientations of Indian employees will facilitate the successful transfer of Western expatriates to India.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the relationship between the GLOBE (Global Leadership and Organizational Behaviour Effectiveness) project national cultural dimensions of values and practices and the Corruption Perception Index (CPI).
Design/methodology/approach
Most empirical research on culture dimensions and corruption is based on Hofstede's dataset of culture conducted more than 25 years ago. Evidence from a more recent dataset of culture dimensions is needed before current generalizations can be made. The GLOBE project is based on the perceptions of 18,000 individuals.
Findings
The results provide empirical support for the influence of uncertainty avoidance values, human orientation practices, and individual collectivism practices on the level of corruption after controlling for economic and human development, which, in turn, adds to the efforts to build a general theory of the culture perspective of corruption.
Research limitations/implications
The findings offer valuable insights on why cultural values and cultural practices should be distinguished as they relate to corruption.
Practical implications
International policy makers as well as managers at multinational corporations can benefit from the findings of this research study.
Originality/value
The research reported is among the first to investigate the issue of corruption from the perspective of national cultural values and practices.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the connections between the regulatory governance, human capital, stakeholder orientation, management control systems (MCSs) and sustainable performance (SP) of power companies. The authors especially looked at how much regulatory governance, human capital, stakeholder orientation and MCSs affect the SP across power companies in Uganda.
Design/methodology/approach
This is a cross-sectional and correlational study. Data were collected from 105 power companies using a questionnaire and analysed using SPSS.
Findings
Stakeholder orientation, MCSs, human capital and regulatory governance significantly predict variances in the SP of power providers in Uganda. Stakeholder orientation is the most important predictor of SP of power companies.
Research limitations/implications
The absence of validation from important stakeholders and the major reliance on company-provided data in existing research on SP raises the possibility of self-desirability bias. To evaluate and verify the information supplied by firms with external stakeholders, further studies might consider using an explanatory mixed methods technique, in which quantitative data are initially gathered from the managers of power companies and analysed and then validated by interviews with important stakeholders.
Originality/value
Using stakeholder, legitimacy and resource-based theories has provided a better explanation for SP which is a multi-dimensional notion. Moreover, the study adds to the body of perception-based research that offers direct management incentives for SP. The perspectives of managers have been gathered through the use of self-administered questionnaires to gather impressions of managers of businesses, which has helped to tap into all aspects of SP. The study’s results offer, probably for the first time to the best of the authors’ knowledge, evidence of the contextual elements that affect SP in African nations like Uganda particularly in the power sector.

Abstract
Examines the relationships between cultural values and preferences for human resource management (HRM) policies and practices in a sample of Taiwanese employees. Specifically, seeks to examine patterns of Chinese national culture in Taiwan, to identify the preferences of employees for specific HRM policies and practices, and to explore the extent to which individual cultural value orientations shape individual preferences for HRM policies and practices. Presents findings from data based on 452 employees from the shopfloor to senior management positions in seven Taiwanese organisations. By controlling the measure of national culture in terms of value orientations, it is found that they account for from only 5 per cent to 10 per cent of the total individual variance in HRM preference. A factor analysis supports the view that national culture value orientations represent a separate construct to both work values and more traditional measures of work outcomes, such as job satisfaction and commitment.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify how the cultural attributes of ethnic networks affect foreign direct investment (FDI) location.
Design/methodology/approach
The study tests on panel data the effect of ethnic networks in interaction with their member’s cultural attributes on FDI location.
Findings
Results show that ethnic networks whose members predominantly exhibit a human orientation do not affect FDI location. However, when performance orientation is the predominant cultural attribute of the members of an ethnic network, there is a positive and significant effect on FDI location.
Practical implications
Managers need to be aware that not all networks will be equally helpful in achieving particular goals. For instance, ethnic networks where the performance orientation is dominant among their members affect FDI location, unlike ethnic networks where human orientation is dominant. Therefore, decision-makers need to identify and align these two elements (networks and goals) to maximize outcomes.
Originality/value
This study contributes to the literature by suggesting that FDI location is affected by ethnic networks where performance orientation is dominant among the members, which is not the case when human orientation is dominant among the members of the ethnic networks.

Abstract
International human resource management (IHRM) is becoming increasingly fundamental to organisational success, as globalisation forces demand organisations to design and implement a global strategy. One of the most critical choices faced by IHRM practitioners is whether and when an organisation should adapt its human resource policies and practices to the local context (localisation). A typology of International Human Resource Management Orientations (IHRMO) that clarifies what IHRMO’s are and what they entail is developed from a review of the literature on localisation and globalisation, convergence and divergence and Perlmutter’s management typology. Additionally, two theoretical models are developed that predict which IHRM orientation identified in the typology should be adopted. The article takes a step towards elucidating effective IHRM strategy and practice decision‐making by showing that culture and institutional pressures, amongst other tings, do make a difference.
