Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to covenant with the cost assessment of a complex repairable system, consisting of two subsystems (Subsystem 1 and Subsystem 2) connected in series configuration and being operated by a human operator. Each subsystem has two identical units in parallel configuration and has different types of failure and two types of repairs (general repair and copula repair). Through the transition diagram, the system of first-order partial differential equations is derived and solved using a supplementary variable technique, Laplace transforms. All failures are assumed to follow exponential distribution, whereas repairs follow two types of distributions that are general and Gumbel–Hougaard family copula. In this paper, explicit expressions for reliability, availability, mean time to failure (MTTF) and cost analysis functions have been obtained. In this paper, two types of repairs (copula repair and general repair) have been studied, and it has been concluded that copula repair is more reliable as compared to general repair. Some computations are taken as particular case by evaluating: reliability, availability, MTTF and cost analysis, so as to capture the effect of both failure and repair rates to reliability measures. The results have been shown in tables and graphs. The convincing part has been discussed in last section of this study.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is focused on the cost assessment of a system consisting two subsystem series configuration. Each subsystem has two identical units in parallel configuration. The performance of the system has been analyzed by supplementary variable techniques and Laplace transforms. Various measures of the reliability have been discussed by evaluations. Software called Maple 13 is used for computations.

Findings

In this research paper, the authors have evaluated the operational cost and incurred profit of the system together with other reliability measures for various situations and different types of failures and two types of repairs using Gumbel–Hougaard family copula distribution.

Research limitations/implications

The present research focuses on the series and parallel configured complex systems that is used everywhere in industry and other sectors. The authors main aim is to claim that repair through the joint probability distribution copula is far better than general repair. Copula repair for a completely failed system is more beneficial for industrial system operations that will increase profit to the industrial sector.

Practical implications

The authors have observed that when repair follows general distribution the values of reliability obtained of the system are less compared to the those obtained when the authors apply copula repair, a joint probability distribution. It is a clear implication for industrial sector and organization to use the policy for a better generate revenue.

Social implications

According to the best of authors’ knowledge, there is no social implication as this study is meant for reliability section. The study in management and case study matters is considered to have social implication.

Originality/value

This research is the original work of authors. Nothing has been copied from any paper or book. The references are cited according to the relevance of study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the criticality of various sub-systems through the behavioral study of a multi-state repairable system with hot redundancy. The availability of the system is optimized to evaluate the optimum combinations of failure and repair rate parameters for various sub-systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The behavioral study of the system is conducted through the stochastic model under probabilistic approach, i.e., Markov process. The first-order differential equations associated with the stochastic model are derived with the use of mnemonic rule assuming that the failure and repair rate parameters of all the sub-systems are constant and exponentially distributed. These differential equations are further solved recursively using the normalizing condition to obtain the long-run availability of the system. A particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for evaluating the optimum availability of the system and supporting computational results are presented.

Findings

The maintenance priorities for various sub-systems can easily be set up, as it is clearly identified in the behavioral analysis that the sub-system (A) is the most critical component which highly influences the system availability as compared to other sub-systems. The PSO technique modifies input failure and repair rate parameters for each sub-system and evaluates the optimum availability of the system.

Originality/value

A bottom case manufacturing system is under the evaluation, which is the main component of front shock absorber in two-wheelers. The input failure and repair rate parameters were parameterized from the information provided by the plant personnel. The finding of the paper provides the various availability measures and shows the grate congruence with the system behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the reliability of the high-speed train operation control system in the Chinese Train Control System Level 3 (CTCS-3) operating mode.

Design/methodology/approach

Dynamic fault tree and Bayesian network method are adopted to analyze the reliability and weakness of the CTCS-3 system.

Findings

First, a physical architecture and data flow diagram of the CTCS-3 system are established according to the typical structure and functions of the CTCS-3 system. Second, the dynamic fault tree of the CTCS-3 system is constructed. Considering the prior probability of the bottom event and the existence of dynamic redundancy, the dynamic fault tree is transformed into a Bayesian net. The reliability of the CTCS-3 system is carried out based on the prior probability and the weakness that affects the reliability of the system based on the posterior probability is also analyzed by the Bayesian network. Finally, it is disclosed that the impact of the on-board subsystem on the reliability of the CTCS-3 system is generally greater than that of the ground subsystem. The two weakest modules in the onboard subsystem are the driver-machine interface (DMI) and balise transmission module (BTM) and the weakest one in the ground subsystem is Balise. The analysis results are generally consistent with the malfunctions in the field operation of China’s high-speed railway.

Originality/value

(1) By reasoning, the reliability of the train operation control system in the CTCS-3 operating mode meets the standard requirements.

(2) Through backward reasoning, it is found that the failure of the onboard subsystem leads to a greater probability of failure of the train control system.

(3) The DMI, BTM and automatic train protection computer unit modules are weak components in the onboard subsystem. Vital digit input&output, train interface unit and train security gateway are rarely involved in previous research, the result in this paper shows that these three modules are also weak components in the subsystem, which requires attention.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents the performance analysis of the automatic ticket vending machine (ATVM) through the functioning of its different hardware and software failures.

Design/methodology/approach

Frequent failures in the working of ATVM have been observed; therefore, the authors of the paper intend to analyze the performance measures of the same. Authors have developed a mathematical model based on different hardware and software failures/repairs, which may occur during the operation, with the help of the Markov process. The developed model has been solved for two kinds of failure/repair rates namely variable failures (very much similar to real-time failure) and constant failures. Lagrange's method and Laplace transformation are used for the solution of the developed model.

Findings

Reliability and mean time to failure of the ATVM are determined. Sensitivity analysis for ATVM is also carried out in the paper. Critical components of the ATVM, which affect the performance of the same, in terms of reliability and MTTF are also identified.

Originality/value

A mathematical model based on different hardware and software failures/repairs of ATVM has been developed to analyze its performance, which has not been done in the past.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to formulate the reliability optimization problem in stochastic and interval domain and also to solve the same under different stochastic set up.

Design/methodology/approach

Stochastic programming technique has been used to convert the chance constraints into deterministic form and the corresponding problem is transformed to mixed-integer constrained optimization problem with interval objective. Then the reduced problem has been converted to unconstrained optimization problem with interval objective by Big-M penalty technique. The resulting problem has been solved by advanced real coded genetic algorithm with interval fitness, tournament selection, intermediate crossover and one-neighbourhood mutation.

Findings

A new optimization technique has been developed in stochastic domain and the concept of interval valued parameters has been integrated with the stochastic setup so as to increase the applicability of the resultant solution to the interval valued nonlinear optimization problems.

Practical implications

The concept of probability distribution with interval valued parameters has been introduced. This concept will motivate the researchers to carry out the research in this new direction.

Originality/value

The application of genetic algorithm is extended to solve the reliability optimization problem in stochastic and interval domain.

Abstract

Purpose

Identifies major issues related to building management in the context of large and dense residential estates. Aims to understand the relationship between the owners and the building management company and determine the keys to success for building management in large and dense residential estates.

Design/methodology/approach

Field interviews are conducted with the management committees of three residential estates. Semi‐structured questions are asked. A model of service quality is applied in the context of building management.

Findings

A framework of the context of building management is constructed. The relationship among the management committee and the building management company is a partnership. Guidelines for narrowing possible service gaps in the process of building management are proposed. Key success factors of building management are identified.

Research limitations/implications

The sample size is small. This study reflects the field practice of outsourced building management of a few large and dense residential estates in Hong Kong. Further validation is necessary elsewhere.

Practical implications

This is a useful source of information for building owners and service providers to effectively implement building management.

Originality/value

The context of building management is graphically represented. The gap model of service quality is applied in the study of the process of service delivery of building management.

Abstract

Purpose

To review published case studies, and some unpublished results, to identify the benefits actually achieved by implementing an electronic records management system or an electronic document management system (ERMS, or EDMS).

Design/methodology/approach

Draws on the literature and unpublished results of work undertaken by the authors’ organisation.

Findings

Few case studies were found in which clear, quantitative benefits are described. The reasons for this are discussed. Those studies that did show clear benefits with good evidence for them demonstrated five principles: (1) the “system” must include the people (policy makers and users); (2) the EDRMS must be integrated with the processes of the organisation; (3) frequently the role of records managers is to educate, advise and support the users; (4) a continuum model covering documents and records gives clearer benefits than separate document and record lifecycles; and (5) there is no single magic bullet to solve information management problems.

Practical implications

An organisation which is planning to implement an EDRMS, or which is planning to upgrade or modify an existing EDRMS, can be confident that real benefits and an acceptable return on investment are possible.

Originality/value

This paper identifies benefits that have been realised in practice from EDRMS implementations.

Abstract

Purpose

E-waste management can reduce relevant impact of the business activity without affecting reliability, quality or performance. Statistical process monitoring is an effective way for managing reliability and quality to devices in manufacturing processes. This paper proposes an approach for monitoring the proportion of e-waste devices based on Beta regression model and particle swarm optimization. A statistical process monitoring scheme integrating residual useful life techniques for efficient monitoring of e-waste components or equipment was developed.

Design/methodology/approach

An approach integrating regression method and particle swarm optimization algorithm was developed for increasing the accuracy of regression model estimates. The control chart tools were used for monitoring the proportion of e-waste devices from fault detection of electronic devices in manufacturing process.

Findings

The results showed that the proposed statistical process monitoring was an excellent reliability and quality scheme for monitoring the proportion of e-waste devices in toner manufacturing process. The optimized regression model estimates showed a significant influence of the process variables for both individually injection rate and toner treads and the interactions between injection rate, toner treads, viscosity and density.

Originality/value

This research is different from others by providing an approach for modeling and monitoring the proportion of e-waste devices. Statistical process monitoring can be used to monitor waste product in manufacturing. Besides, the key contribution in this study is to develop different models for fault detection and identify any change point in the manufacturing process. The optimized model used can be replicated to other Electronic Industry and allows support of a satisfactory e-waste management.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper deals with the optimization of coal handling system performability for a thermal power plant.

Design/methodology/approach

Coal handling system comprises of five subsystems, namely Wagon Tippler, Crusher, Bunker, Feeder and Coal Mill. The partial differential equations are derived on the behalf of transition diagram by using the Markov approach. These partial differential equations are further solved to obtain the performance model with the help of normalization condition. Numerous performability levels are achieved by putting the appropriate combinations of failure and repair rates (FRRs) in performance model. Performability optimization for coal handling system is obtained by varying the population and generation size.

Findings

Highest performability level, that is, 93.33 at population size of 40 and 93.31 at generation size of 70, is observed.

Originality/value

The findings of this paper highlight the optimum value of performability level and FRRs for numerous subsystems. These findings are highly beneficial for plant administration to decide about the maintenance planning.

Abstract

Purpose

Service excellence has been recognized as a crucial means of achieving customer delight. Several recent studies have argued that redundant services may be perceived as unnecessary by customers; however, few studies have explored the construct of service redundancy. This study aims to identify and classify service redundancy in the foodservice industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This qualitative study conducted in-depth interviews with 72 participants, namely, 36 customers and 36 managers of fine dining restaurants in Taiwan. Content analysis of the data yielded the classification of service redundancy.

Findings

This study determined 16 categories of service redundancy categorized under three themes: service behavior, service regulations and environmental factors. Furthermore, six causes and four consequences of service redundancy were identified.

Research limitations/implications

Customers and managers of fine dining restaurants were interviewed; thus, the findings may not be fully generalizable to service redundancy in other restaurant types.

Originality/value

The contribution of this research is the construction of a model of service redundancy, which could serve as a theoretical foundation for further examination of service redundancy and the relationships between the related constructs.
