Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the surface electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of AISI 430 stainless steel (430 SS) as bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), a protective Nb-modified layer is formed onto stainless steel via the plasma surface diffusion alloying method. The effect of diffusion alloying time on electrochemical behavior and surface conductivity is evaluated.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the surface electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance of modified specimen are evaluated by the potentiodynamic and potentionstatic polarization tests. Moreover, the hydrophobicity is also investigated by contact angle measurement.

Findings

The Nb-modified 430 SS treated by 1.5 h (1.5Nb) presented a lower passivation current density, lower interfacial contact resistance and a higher hydrophobicity than other modified specimens. Moreover, the 1.5 Nb specimen presents a smoother surface than other modified specimens after potentionstatic polarization tests.

Originality/value

The effect of diffusion alloying time on electrochemical behavior, surface conductivity and hydrophobicity of modified specimen is evaluated. The probable anti-corrosion mechanism of Nb-modified specimen in simulated acid PEMFC cathode environment is presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the process of rapid prototyping eddy current sensors using 3D printing technology. Making full use of the advantages of 3D printing, the authors study on a new method for fabrication of an eddy current sensor.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the authors establish a 3D model using SolidWorks. And the eddy current sensor is printed by the fused deposition modeling method.

Findings

Measurement results show that the 3D printing eddy current sensor has a wider linear measurement range and better linearity than the traditional manufacturing sensor. Compared to traditional eddy current sensor fabrication method, this 3D printed sensor can be fabricated at a lower cost, and the fabrication process is more convenient and faster.

Practical implications

This demonstrated 3D printing process can be applied to the 3D printing of sensors of more sophisticated structures that are difficult to fabricate using conventional techniques.

Originality/value

In this work, the process of rapid prototyping eddy current sensors using 3D printing is presented. Sensors fabricated with the 3D printing possess lots of merits than traditional manufactures. 3D printed sensors can be customized according to the configuration of the overall system, thus reducing the demand of sensor's rigid mounting interfaces. The 3D printing also reduce design costs as well as shortens the development cycle. This allows for quick translation of a design from concept to a useful device.

Abstract

Purpose

Adopting an affective events perspective, this paper proposes and tests a moderated-mediation model linking coaching leadership (CL), positive emotion at work (PEW), proactive personality (PP) and constructive deviance (CD).

Design/methodology/approach

Altogether, 225 supervisor-subordinate pairs from 45 teams within a large Chinese manufacturing enterprise took part in our study. To keep common method bias to a minimal, two sources of data were used (subordinates and their direct supervisors).

Findings

(1) CL and employee CD have a positive association; (2) employee PEW mediates the connection between CL and employee CD; (3) the positive association between CL and follower PEW is moderated by employee PP such that PP strengthens the CL-PEW relationship (4) employee PP accentuates the indirect impact of CL on employee CD via employee PEW. Specifically, the indirect link is insignificant when PP is low.

Originality/value

(1) The results of this study enrich the CD literature; (2) the work puts forward a simple but foundational framework for understanding the CL process; (3) the third contribution arises from examining the influence of employee PP on the relationship between CL and employee CD.

Abstract

This study contributes to existing scholarship on democratic education by focusing explicitly on the affective dynamics of teaching with and for discussion. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to critically analyze the first author’s efforts to address the role of emotion in democratic dialogue within the context of classroom-based discussions and the work of preparing future social studies educators for their role as discussion facilitators. We found that despite the instructor’s stated goals and her efforts to teach about the constructive role of emotion in learning to communicate across difference, overall, students continued to judge dispassionate and disembodied speech acts as appropriate, while expressions of anger, frustration, or exaspe-ration were judged inappropriate. More specifically, if a female student spoke with anger or frustration during class discussions, her concerns, ideas, and questions tended to be ridiculed, ignored, or dismissed, while the same emotional rule did not apply to male students. If our intent is to facilitate communication across difference, we must actively attend to the ways in which social hierarchies inform discussion by carefully considering how emotional expression and experiences are positioned.

Abstract

Purpose

A parametric method for designing the hub, casing and blades of the miniature centrifugal compressor impeller was developed. The relationship model of the size, aerodynamic and performance parameters of the centrifugal impeller was established. Based on the selected design parameters, the miniature centrifugal-type impeller was designed, and the work efficiency was calculated.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, a micro-centrifugal compressor impeller with a diameter of less than 25 mm was designed. A parametric design method was developed, and the functional relationship between the geometric and gas fluidity parameters was established.

Findings

The results of this study showed that the performance parameters of the designed micro-centrifugal impeller satisfied the design requirements. The proposed method is useful as a reference for designing and analysing compressor impellers under high Reynolds number conditions.

Originality/value

A parametric design method was developed, and the functional relationship between the geometric and gas fluidity parameters was established. Under the Reynolds number conditions, the flow characteristics of the gas in the compressor were analysed; the shear-stress transport turbulence equation was solved using the finite volume method. In addition, the effects of the Reynolds number on the velocity, pressure, mass flow and efficiency of the micro-scale centrifugal compressor were evaluated. The results showed that the performance parameters of the designed micro-centrifugal impeller satisfied the design requirements. The proposed method is useful as a reference for designing and analysing compressor impellers under high Reynolds number conditions.

Abstract

This paper describes the organic geochemical characteristics and their roles on barium enrichment in the No. 2 Coal from Huanglong Jurassic Coalfield, China. A total of 18 bench samples were taken from Huangling Mine 2. The average content of barium (3701 mg/kg) was about 23 times higher than that of common world coals. Terrestrial higher plants were the main coal-forming parent material. Relying on the parameters of OEP, Pr/Ph and so on, there is little correlation between organic geochemical characteristics and barium enrichment. Therefore, organic material has little influence on the process of coal-forming and the enrichment of barium.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the tribological behavior and wear mechanism of a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)/polyester (PET) fabric composite for application as a self-lubricating liner suitable for high-speed and low-load friction conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of different loads and sliding speeds on the friction coefficients and wear characteristics of the composite were studied using reciprocating friction tests. Scanning electron microscopy, extended depth-of-field microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry was used to analyze the worn surface morphology, wear depth and elemental content of the lubrication films, respectively.

Findings

The friction coefficient curves of the composites presented a long-term steady wear stage under different sliding conditions. With increasing sliding speed, the friction coefficient and wear depth of the composite slowly increased. The film-forming mechanism of the composite revealed that the PTFE/PET ply yarn on the composite surface formed complete PTFE lubrication films at the initial sliding stage.

Originality/value

The PTFE/PET fabric composite maintained good friction stability and high-speed adaptability, which demonstrates that the composite has broad application prospects as a highly reliable self-lubricating bearing liner with a long lifespan.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a model for product recommendation to improve the accuracy of recommendation based on the current search engines used in e-commerce platforms like Tmall.com.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the proposed model comprehensively considers price, trust and online reviews, which all represent critical factors in consumers’ purchasing decisions. Second, the model introduces the quantization methods for these criteria incorporating fuzzy theory. Third, the model uses a distance measure between two single valued neutrosophic sets based on the prioritized average operator to consolidate the influences of positive, neutral and negative comments. Finally, the model uses multi-criteria decision-making methods to integrate the influences of price, trust and online reviews on purchasing decisions to generate recommendations.

Findings

To demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed model, a case study is conducted based on Tmall.com. The results of case study indicate that the recommendations of our model perform better than those of current search engines of Tmall.com. The proposed model can significantly improve the accuracy of product recommendations based on search engines.

Originality/value

The product recommendation method can meet the critical challenge from the search engines on e-commerce platforms. In addition, the proposed method could be used in practice to develop a new application for e-commerce platforms.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to build a new objective evaluation method of fabric pilling by combining an integrated image analysis technology with a deep learning algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

Series of image analysis techniques were adopted. First, a Fourier transform transformed images into the frequency domain. The optimal resolution matrix of an exponential high-pass filter was determined by combining the energy algorithm. Second, the multidimensional discrete wavelet transform determined the optimal division level. Third, the iterative threshold method was used to enhance images to obtain a complete and clear pilling ball images. Finally, the deep learning algorithm was adopted to train data from pilling ball images, and the pilling levels were classified according to the learning features.

Findings

The paper provides a new insight about how to objectively evaluate fabric pilling grades. Results of the experiment indicate that the proposed objective evaluation method can obtain clear and complete pilling information and the classification accuracy rate of the deep learning algorithm is 94.2%, whose structures are rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation function, four hidden layers, cross-entropy learning rules and the regularization method.

Research limitations/implications

Because the methodology of the paper is based on woven fabric, the research study’s results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test other kinds of fabric further, such as knitted and unwoven fabrics.

Originality/value

Combined with a series of image analysis technology, the integrated method can effectively extract clear and complete pilling information from pilled fabrics. Pilling grades can be classified by the deep learning algorithm with learning pilling information.
