Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to define the relationships between the first spinning zone of the hollow-spindle spinning system and technological parameters of manufacturing multi-thread fancy yarn.

Design/methodology/approach

A simple mathematical equation was introduced to account for the effect-thread helices. The validity of this equation was tested using visual observations of the helices of the effect thread in terms of their number, width and regularity and then compared against the theoretical values.

Findings

It was found that higher overfeed ratios increased the diameter of the helices without affecting their number, while increasing the rotational speed increased their number but reduced their diameter. The effect of these changes on the fancy yarns was that higher number of helices resulted in more fancy profiles while wider helices resulted in larger fancy profiles.

Originality/value

This research offers fancy yarn manufacturers a better understanding of the manufacturing process of fancy yarn and its practical advantage is to help them in determining the type of the resultant fancy yarns by controlling the geometry of the first spinning zone.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to define the relationships between the structure of multi-thread fancy yarns and the combination of the rotational speed of the hollow-spindle spinning system and thickness and stiffness of the effect component.

Design/methodology/approach

To do so, two groups of fancy yarns were made using stiff and soft effect threads and at six different machine settings.

Findings

It was found that the stiff effect thread was suitable to make fancy yarns at low rotational speeds, while the thickness of the effect threads was more important than its stiffness at low number of wraps. Additionally, even when using the same number of wraps and the overfeed ratio, a bouclé yarn, a gimp yarn, a wavy yarn or a loop yarn may results if the thickness and stiffness of the effect thread and the rotational speed were all controlled properly.

Originality/value

This study helps fancy yarn spinners to determine the type of final fancy yarns by controlling the spinning geometry in the first spinning zone.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to mathematically model the structure of doubled fancy yarns made by combining together several threads.

Design/methodology/approach

It was assumed that such a structure may have two distinctive parts – sinusoidal and helical (i.e. sigmoidal). This model is based on calculating the length of the effect thread in relation to the core thread. The case of having several variants of such a structure was discussed to account for several types of doubled fancy yarns. The number of wraps of the binder, the overfed ratio, and heights of the fancy profiles in the different parts were the fundamental parameters of this model. The effects of changes in the number of wraps, the overfeed ratio or both simultaneously, on this model, were also considered. The shape factor of fancy yarn was also modelled depending on the basic model of the structure.

Findings

The model was tested and the correlation coefficient between the theoretical value and the real value of length of the effect thread was 0.90.

Originality/value

This model is useful for predicting the length of the effect component based on the type, dimension and number of the fancy profiles of doubled fancy yarn, and for understanding the changes of the multiple-thread structure of fancy yarn when the overfeed ratio and/or the number of wraps were to change.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is researching on the motion law of fiber in the vortex field inside the nozzle.

Design/methodology/approach

A three-dimensional calculation model was established using the MVS861 (Muratec Vortex Spinning) air-jet vortex-spinning nozzle as the prototype, and the fluid–solid coupling calculation module in the finite element calculation software ADINA (Adina System) was used to numerically analyze the fiber-air flow two-phase coupling. At the same time, the effect of the air pressure at the nozzle on the two-phase flow is studied.

Findings

The results show that after the air flow ejected through the nozzle, a vortex field will be generated in the flow field to push the internal fiber to move toward the nozzle outlet in a wave motion; as the air pressure at the nozzle increases, the fiber movement period becomes shorter and the oscillation frequency becomes higher; increasing the air pressure at the spray hole can improve the working efficiency of fiber twisting and wrapping.

Originality/value

The research present an effective and feasible theoretical model and method for the motion law of fiber in the vortex field inside the nozzle based on ADINA fluid–structure coupling model.

A Description of the Dixi Machine Tool which is being used by Sperry to Machine Components for the Ship's Inertial Navigation System and for Twin Gyro Platforms. Abstract

Purpose

Wood is one of the materials that is used for building construction either as structural member or as finishes from ages past to contemporary generation. It is composed of elongated, hollow spindle shaped cells that are arranged parallel to each other along the trunk of a tree. The resistance to water, chemicals, strength properties, appearance and decay rate is dictated by the fibrous cells. The purpose of this paper was to examine the application and use of wooden floor finish (an extract from wood) in residential buildings in Lagos, Nigeria, with a view to determine its effectiveness.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopted a dual stage survey approach before the administration of questionnaire on 100 respondents that were selected through purposive sampling after the initial inquiry on the use of the material from 384 randomly selected samples from the entire population.

Findings

The study shows that the material is applied in all interior spaces except bathrooms and toilets. Minimal adoption is also seen in the kitchen area. Users indicate that wooden floor finish requires little maintenance, has low impact on users' health, considered safe-minimal occurrence of home accidents is recorded, has moderate thermal insulation and affordable.

Practical implications

The usage has impact on the environment due to continuous lumbering activities and lack of adequate plan for reforestation. This suggests that its sustainability depends on afforestation programmes. Its poor performance in sound insulation, water and fire resistance requires further attention. The maintenance is relatively easy and affordable.

Originality/value

The author made a new foray into investigating the performance of wooden floor finish due to its resurgence in the area bearing in mind the unseasoned condition of wood in circulation in the area. Previous adoptions were done by a less aggressive generation of well-trained artisans. Best places for its usage within the interior spaces are identified.

Examines the seventeenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

The bactofuge system has been in existence for a number of years. It has principally been used in the cheese industry where its high‐cleaning capabilities have been used to remove spores from cheese milk that could cause latent fermentation in semi‐hard cheeses. It has now been adapted for processing consumption milk, where it holds out the promise of prolonging the life of fresh, pasteurised milk by three‐five days. Two factors have increased interest by the UK dairy industry in this system. First, changes in consumer buying have brought an increase in the number of people who purchase milk only once a week and who demand that the milk is drinkable six or seven days later, even though it may not have remained in proper storage conditions throughout this period. Second, the concentration of milk processing in a small number of very large dairies has led to a lengthening of the distribution chain. With hermetic bactofugation, the dairies are able to add a few more days’ life to their milk products. This satisfies the consumers’ demand for fresh product which lasts longer once it has left the shop. The use of a hermetic bactofuge, a development of the market‐leading hermetic separator, means that the dairies are able to use familiar technology to improve their products at an economic cost.
