Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to present the novel design approach for a low power LC-voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) design with low phase noise that too targeted at the most sought band of Bluetooth applications. Owing to their crucial role in a wide variety of modern applications, VCO and phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizers have been the subject of extensive research in recent years. In fact, VCO is one of the key components being used in a modern PLL to provide local frequency signal since a few decades. The complicated synthesizer requirements imposed by cellular phone applications have been a key driver for PLL research.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first opted to present the recent developments on implemented techniques of LC-VCO designs in popular RF bands. An LC-VCO with a differential (cross-coupled) MOS structure is then presented which has aimed to compensate the losses of an on-chip inductor implemented in UMC’s 130 nm RF-CMOS process. The LC-VCO is finally targeted to embed onto the synthesizer chip, to address the narrowband (S-Band) applications where Bluetooth has been the most sought one. The stacked inductor topology has been adopted to get the benefit of its on-chip compatibility and low noise. The active differential architecture, which basically is a cross-coupled NMOS structure, has been then envisaged for the gain which counters the losses completely. Three major areas of LC-VCO design are considered and worked upon for the optimum design parameters, which includes Bluetooth coverage range of 2.410 GHz to 2.490 GHz, better linearity and high sensitivity and finally the most sought phase noise performance for an LC-VCO.

Findings

The work provides the complete design aspect of a novel LC-VCO design for low phase noise narrowband applications such as Bluetooth. Using tuned MOS varactor, in 130 nm-RF CMOS process, a high gain sensitivity of 194 MHz/Volt was obtained. Thus, the entire frequency range of 2415-2500 MHz for Bluetooth applications, supporting multiple standards from 3G to 5G, was covered by voltage tuning of 0.7-1.0 V. To achieve the low power dissipation, low bias (1.2 V) cross-coupled differential structure was adopted, which completely paid for the losses occurred in the LC resonator. The power dissipation comes out to be 8.56 mW which is a remarkably small value for such a high gain and low noise VCO. For the VCO frequencies in the presented LO-plan, the tank inductor was allowed to have a moderate value of inductance (8 nH), while maintaining a very high Q factor. The LC-VCO of the proposed LO-generator achieved extremely low phase noise of −140 dBc/Hz @ 1 MHz, as compared to the contemporary designs.

Research limitations/implications

Though a professional tool for inductor and circuit design (ADS-by Keysight Technologies) has been chosen, actual inductor and circuit implementation on silicon may still lead to various parasitic evolutions; therefore, one must have that margin pre-considered while finalizing the design and testing it.

Practical implications

The proposed LC-VCO architecture presented in this work shows low phase noise and wide tuning range with high gain sensitivity in S-Band, low power dissipation and narrowband nature of wireless applications.

Originality/value

The on-chip stacked inductor has uniquely been designed with the provided dimensions and other parameters. Though active design is in a conventional manner, its sizing and bias current selection are unique. The pool of results obtained completely preserves the originally to the full extent.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present two stage pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor-based low noise amplifier (LNA) designed using low temperature co-fire ceramic (LTCC) technique for ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. The LNA operates in the frequency range of (400∼500) MHz which is suitable for wireless communication applications.

Design/methodology/approach

This LNA uses resistive capacitive (RC) feedback in the first stage to have wide bandwidth and interstage network for gain enhancement. By using external RC feedback, stability is improved and noise matching in the input stage is isolated by decoupling inductor. The excellent performance parameters including gain, noise figure (NF), wideband and linearity are attained without affecting the power consumption, compactness and cost of the proposed design.

Findings

Simulation is carried out using advanced design software and the result shows that gain of 33.7 dB, NF 0.416 dB and 1 dB compression point (P1dB) of 18.59 dBm are achieved with a supply voltage of 2.5 V. The return loss of input and output are −19.3 dB and −10.5 dB, respectively. From the above aforementioned parameters, it is confirmed that the proposed LNA is a promising candidate for receivers where high gain and very low NF are always demandable with good linearity for applications operating in the UHF band.

Originality/value

The innovation of the proposed LNA is that the concurrent attainment of high gain, low NF, wideband, optimum input matching, good stability by RC feedback and interstage network using LTCC technique to achieve robustness, low cost and compactness to prove the applicability of design for wireless applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to show that due to the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) industry in recent years, the demand for the higher integration of wireless communication systems with a higher data rate of transmission capacity and lower power consumption has increased tremendously. The radio frequency power amplifier (PA) design is getting more challenging and crucial. A PA for a 2.45 GHz IoT application using 0.18 µm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology is presented in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

The design consists of two stages, the driver and output stage, where both use a single-stage common source transistor configuration. In view of performance, the PA can deliver more than 20 dB gain from 2.4 GHz to 2.5 GHz.

Findings

The maximum output power achieved by PA is 13.28 dBm. As the PA design is targeted for Bluetooth low energy (BLE) transmitter use, a minimum of 10 dBm output power should be achieved by PA to transmit the signal in BLE standard. The PA exhibits a constant output third-order interception point of 18 dBm before PA becomes saturated after 10 dBm output power. The PA shows a peak power added efficiency of 17.82% at the 13.24 dBm output power.

Originality/value

The PA design exhibits good linearity up to 10 dBm out the PA design exhibits good linearity up to 10 dBm output power without sacrificing efficiency. At the operating frequency of 2.45 GHz, the PA exhibits a stability k-factor, the value of more than 1; thus, the PA design is considered unconditional stable. Besides, the PA shows the s-parameters performance of –7.91 dB for S11, –11.07 dB for S22 and 21.5 dB for S21.

Considering its vast utility in industries, this paper aims to present a detailed review on fundamentals, classification and progresses in pressure sensors, along with its wide area of applications, its design aspects and challenges, to provide state-of-the-art gist to the researchers of the similar domain at one place.

Design/methodology/approach

Swiftly emerging research prospects in the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) enable to build complex and sophisticated micro-structures on a substrate containing moving masses, cantilevers, flexures, levers, linkages, dampers, gears, detectors, actuators and many more on a single chip. One of the MEMS initial products that emerged into the micro-system technology is MEMS pressure sensor. Because of their high performance, low cost and compact in size, these sensors are extensively being adopted in numerous applications, namely, aerospace, automobile and bio-medical domain, etc. These application requirements drive and impose tremendous conditions on sensor design to overcome the tedious design and fabrication procedure before its reality. MEMS-based pressure sensors enable a wide range of pressure measurement as per the application requirements.

Findings

The paper provides a detailed review on fundamentals, classification and progresses in pressure sensors, along with its wide area of applications, its design aspects and challenges, to provide state of the art gist to the researchers of the similar domain at one place.

Originality/value

The present paper discusses the basics of MEMS pressure sensors, their working principles, different design aspects, classification, type of sensing diaphragm used and illustration of various transduction mechanisms. Moreover, this paper presents a comprehensive review on present trend of research on MEMS-based pressure sensors, its applications and the research gap observed till date along with the scope for future work, which has not been discussed in earlier reviews.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present state-of-the-art approaches for precise operation of a robotic manipulator on a macro- to micro/nanoscale.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first briefly discussed fundamental issues associated with precise operation of a robotic manipulator on a macro- to micro/nanoscale. Second, this paper described and compared the characteristics of basic components (i.e. mechanical parts, actuators, sensors and control algorithm) of the robotic manipulator. Specifically, commonly used mechanisms of the manipulator were classified and analyzed. In addition, intuitive meaning and applications of its actuator explained and compared in details. Moreover, related research studies on general control algorithm and visual control that are used in a robotic manipulator to achieve precise operation have also been discussed.

Findings

Remarkable achievements in dexterous mechanical design, excellent actuators, accurate perception, optimized control algorithms, etc., have been made in precise operations of a robotic manipulator. Precise operation is critical for dealing with objects which need to be manufactured, modified and assembled. The operational accuracy is directly affected by the performance of mechanical design, actuators, sensors and control algorithms. Therefore, this paper provides a categorization showing the fundamental concepts and applications of these characteristics.

Originality/value

This paper presents a categorization of the mechanical design, actuators, sensors and control algorithms of robotic manipulators in the macro- to micro/nanofield for precise operation.

Abstract

Purpose

The empirical modelling of major rapid prototyping (RP) processes such as fused deposition modelling (FDM), selective laser sintering (SLS) and stereolithography (SL) has attracted the attention of researchers in view of their contribution to the overall cost of the product. Empirical modelling techniques such as artificial neural network (ANN) and regression analysis have been paid considerable attention. In this paper, a powerful modelling technique using genetic programming (GP) for modelling the FDM process is introduced and the issues related to the empirical modelling of RP processes are discussed. The present work aims to investigate the performance of various potential empirical modelling techniques so that the choice of an appropriate modelling technique for a given RP process can be made. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Apart from the study of applications of empirical modelling techniques on RP processes, a multigene GP is applied to predict the compressive strength of a FDM part based on five given input process parameters. The parameter setting for GP is determined using trial and experimental runs. The performance of the GP model is compared to those of neural networks and regression analysis.

Findings

The GP approach provides a model in the form of a mathematical equation reflecting the relationship between the compressive strength and five given input parameters. The performance of ANN is found to be better than those of GP and regression, showing the effectiveness of ANN in predicting the performance characteristics of the FDM part. The GP is able to identify the significant input parameters that comply with those of an earlier study. The distinct advantages of GP as compared to ANN and regression are highlighted. Several vital issues related to the empirical modelling of RP processes are also highlighted in the end.

Originality/value

For the first time, a review of the application of empirical modelling techniques on RP processes is undertaken and a new GP method for modelling the FDM process is introduced. The performance of potential empirical modelling techniques for modelling RP processes is evaluated. This is an important step in modernising the era of empirical modelling of RP processes.

The brake controller is a key component of the locomotive brake system. It is essential to study its safety.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper summarizes and analyzes typical faults of the brake controller, and proposes four categories of faults: position sensor faults, microswitch faults, mechanical faults and communication faults. Suggestions and methods for improving the safety of the brake controller are also presented.

Findings

In this paper, a self-judgment and self-learning dynamic calibration method is proposed, which integrates the linear error of the sensor and the manufacturing and assembly errors of the brake controller to solve the output drift. This paper also proposes a logic for diagnosing and handling microswitch faults. Suggestions are proposed for other faults of brake controller.

Originality/value

The methods proposed in this paper can greatly improve the usability of the brake controller and reduce the failure rate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to report an emulation configuration of a three pinch-off memristor (TPM), whose transient characteristics consist three cross-over points on the voltage-current plane, which is dissimilar to a conventional memristor. These characteristics can be very useful in memristor-based multi-bit memory devices and hyperchaotic oscillators.

Design/methodology/approach

The work describes the Mathematical framework for TPM and a circuit emulator based on the derived conditions. The configuration is based on five operational transconductance amplifier (OTAs) and four grounded passive elements. After which, we have verified its operation using personal simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis simulation environment. Finally, the implementation of OTA-based TPM using commercial integrated circuit (IC) LM13700 has also been presented.

Findings

It has been shown that a flux-dependent memductance expression of cubic order can show three intersections on the VI contour under certain parameter related constraints. Moreover, the OTA-based emulator reported in the work is very compact in nature because of the no use of external multiplier IC/circuitry, which has been popular in previous emulators.

Originality/value

For the first time, a multiple cross-over memristor emulator has been reported which can operate under practical operating conditions such as at practical operating frequencies and sinusoidal excitation.

Abstract

Atmospheric dependent, gas sensitive resistors seem to be good candidates for detecting critical air pollution levels. Recently, great progress has been made in the development of various sensor types, but less attention seems to be paid to the integration of sensor elements with different characteristics. The aim of this international project is to develop a smart hybrid gas multi‐sensor module for environmental applications, i.e. by combining classical thick‐ and thin‐film elements with polymer‐film based sensors and also a signal processing ASIC within a single package, which should be useful for all sensor types. The module should enable multi‐sensor operation as well, when connected to an intelligent signal‐processing unit.

Purpose

Fatigue damage of internal threads has gradually become the main failure mode of force sensor. To make the internal thread structure of force sensor meet the fatigue performance requirements, the design criteria of static strength and fatigue life are comprehensively considered in this paper.

Design/methodology/approach

The variation of static stress and fatigue life with the size of the main structure is obtained by simulation. By changing the number of thread turns, the hub height and outer diameter of the hub, the optimized design of the spoke force sensor is determined.

Findings

The experiment was carried out based on the determined optimized structure, and the results showed that the fatigue life meets the design requirements.

Originality/value

This research has certain guiding significance for the design and developments of high-cycle fatigue force sensors.
