Abstract

Purpose

Previous work has asserted that the co-innovation process in the music business is composed of four stages, i.e. co-discovery, co-creation, co-delivery and co-capture. This study aims to re-examine and validate this proposed conceptualisation by gathering and interviewing additional respondents, specifically academics and professional event organisers, who were not formerly involved. By gaining more insight from different stakeholders, this study expects to gain more reliable results regarding the proposed concept derived from the previous study.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the case study method by carrying out qualitative interview data collection from 11 respondents. Narrative analysis is used in examining the findings. Pattern matching is used as the basis of the analysis using the proposed conceptualisation from co-discovery to co-capture of co-innovation as the rival analysis to the empirical findings discovered in this study. This paper also discusses how the validity and reliability of the qualitative analysis carried out are ensured.

Findings

This study supports the notion that the co-innovation process in the music industry follows the four stages of co-discovery, co-creation, co-delivery and co-capture. The respondents, from different professional backgrounds, interviewed in this study indicated and validated that the proposed framework aligns with their actual practices, expectations and realities, along with their specific roles in the music industry’s ecosystems.

Practical implications

The results of this study can be used as a reference in developing guidelines or policies for co-innovation practices in the music business, which previous studies have not explored, e.g. focusing only on preconditions for positive collaboration, open license and music for co-creation or discussions that are merely conceptual.

Originality/value

This study validates the co-innovation process in the music business proposed by the previous works, which integrates the value chain thinking concept within the analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to ascertain the fundamental characteristics that influence the theme park experience during the period following the pandemic, using the experiencescape framework.

Design/methodology/approach

To obtain electronic word-of-mouth data, this research leverages Google Maps reviews and uses diverse Python libraries for computational and natural language processing-based analyses.

Findings

In the context of theme parks during a pandemic, visitors tend to convey favorable attitudes and engage in discourse pertaining to six primary themes or subjects, i.e. health and safety protocols, ride and queue management, sanitation measures, promotional pricing, family-oriented amenities and exciting escapades.

Research limitations/implications

This study highlights the continued relevance of the experiencescape framework during the COVID-19 pandemic and the dynamic nature of its five dimensions. Furthermore, it underscores the intricate interplay between these dimensions and advocates for a comprehensive approach to experiencescape management.

Originality/value

The research addresses a notable gap in existing literature by examining the pandemic’s impact on theme park experiences, using natural language processing techniques for insights gleaned from online reviews. In doing so, this study contributes a more profound and nuanced comprehension of the theme park experience in the post-COVID era.

Abstract

Purpose

With the growing interest in eudaimonia in the past years and the need to better understand festival visitors' motivation in the context of music festivals, this study aims to propose visitor segmentation based on the values of hedonia, life satisfaction and eudaimonia.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis in this study employs a case research method that follows the abductive paradigm. The authors begin their conceptual foundation with a review of the literature on hedonia, life satisfaction and eudaimonia. The authors then use the preliminary conceptual foundation as the basis of rival analysis through a focus group and interviews with senior executives, government officials, communities and other related stakeholders. The authors also carry out an exploratory factor analysis to determine the building blocks of eudaimonic festival experiences. Last, using cluster analysis, the authors support their conceptual proposition from the initial qualitative inquiries.

Findings

From the three studies that the authors performed, their findings suggest that, based on hedonia and eudaimonia, festival attendees can be divided into three distinct segments: (1) pleasure seekers (i.e. visitors who look for personal pleasure, enjoyment and affection), (2) playful learners (i.e. visitors who not only seek pleasure, but also consider the urgency to think about the need to grow as a person) and (3) transcendentalists (i.e. visitors who seek a balance of pleasure, escapism, self-reflection, personal meaning and impact through attending festival activities).

Research limitations/implications

This study argues that the ideas of hedonia and eudaimonia are present in the context of the music festival. Theoretically, this paper suggests that festival-goers can be divided into three clusters based on the values of hedonia and eudaimonia: pleasure seekers, playful learners and transcendentalists. Practically, this study suggests that festival organisers should consider developing music concert events by taking into account the eudaimonic and hedonistic desires, intrinsically possessed by the festival-goers, which is expected to add value to the produced musical event.

Originality/value

This study is the first to present visitor segmentation in a music festival setting based on the values of eudaimonia, life satisfaction and hedonia.

Abstract

Purpose

This viewpoint paper is based on consultancy project in developing strategic marketing plan for building a professional recording studio in Bandung, Indonesia. Nonetheless, previous studies that scrutinize the key success factors in music recording studio industry are noticeably lacking, whereas music artists still rely heavily on recording studio providers to record their music and distribute it to the market. Hence, finding out the critical success factors (CSF) can help recording studio to craft strategic marketing plan within effective and efficient budget. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Methods carried out in this study are based on triangulation which comprises of primary observation, interviews to experts in the respective field, and literature reviews regarding CSF, service quality and service excellence. Five years of primary observations took place in five studios on two major cities in Indonesia which are Bandung and Jakarta of which many prominent musicians were originated. The interviews were conducted to six respondents who have more than ten years of experience in music industry, and have produced at least two albums through professional music recording processes in music studios including recording, mixing, and mastering.

Findings

It is found that by exploiting the conceptual theories of service quality and service excellence as the foundations, there are primarily three critical factors in music recording studio industry in Indonesia which are human resources development in primarily technical aspects, communication skills, and servicescapes which involve the recording facilities and also the studio surroundings.

Research limitations/implications

This study only took samples from five studios, two major cities in Indonesia and limited experts opinion. Nevertheless, confirmatory study is expected in the future in order to gain deeper insights or other additional point of view in determining CSF in the recording studio industry. This paper, however, has contributed to the existing literature of service quality, service excellence, and CSF in a narrow scope of industry which is music recording studio.

Practical implications

Managers who wish to start a recording studio business must look deeply into these three critical factors to address the budget effectively and efficiently in initial investment of the studio. Through this study it can be observed that music studio as a service firm can still focus on creating critical values to strive even though the music industry landscape has been deteriorated due to piracy and the development of technology. It is expected that through this study, by understanding the CSF, managers in music recording studio can focus on creating value effectively and efficiently in recording studio business.

Originality/value

This study contributes to fill the gap of empirical discussion in determining CSF in the music recording studio business in Indonesia in the context of service quality and service excellence, which has not been examined by previous scholars.

Abstract

Purpose

Indonesians are known for their unique behaviour and willingness to travel abroad for healthcare treatments. More than half of the healthcare “tourists” who travel to Malaysia come from Indonesia, followed in numbers by those in India, Japan, and China, Libya, the UK, Australia, USA, Bangladesh and the Philippines. Malaysia is also geographically located near two Indonesian main islands, i.e. North Sumatera and North Kalimantan. These reasons contribute to making Indonesia one of the most productive healthcare consumers in Malaysia. This study aims to examine these Indonesian consumers’ through the use of behavioural lenses to examine their medical tourism experiences in Malaysia, its neighbouring country.

Design/methodology/approach

The theory of planned behaviour is used as the basis of these analyses and hypotheses development. In total, 7 variables and 18 indicators that built both the exogenous and endogenous variables were developed from previous literature. Through a purposive sampling technique, the authors collected 200 samples of individuals where each respondent must at least have been to Malaysia once for medical treatments related to a general check-up, cardiovascular, cancer, orthopaedics, nervous systems or dental problems. A partial least squares – structural equation modelling analysis was carried out to examine both the measurement model and the structural model.

Findings

Behavioural belief positively affects the attitude of Indonesian patients and their intentions to visit Malaysia for medical treatment, i.e. attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control. Results show that as individuals, Indonesians have a strong belief that undergoing medical treatment in Malaysia will be more favourable than having that same medical treatment in Indonesia. The study also shows that people who are considered important to patients, e.g. family members or relatives, significantly influence their intention to visit Malaysian medical institutions. The authors also found that patients’ resources and capabilities – e.g. financial strength, supporting infrastructures and time availability – are essential factors for Indonesian patients to choose medical tourism and to visit Malaysia as their venue for medical services.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this study are consistent with the previous research, which has shown that attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control positively affect visit intention. The results also suggest new interesting theoretical findings that Indonesia’s medical tourist intention to visit Malaysia is most strongly caused by subjective norms followed by individual attitudes and perceived behavioural control, all reasons that are identical to Japanese medical tourists’ visiting South Korea for similar purposes. Indeed, there are similar behavioural practices and beliefs among both Indonesian and Japanese medical tourists, despite the gap existing in these two countries’ economies.

Practical implications

The study proposes two managerial implications using its findings. First, this study can be a basis for the Malaysian medical tourism business to better understand Indonesian medical tourists’ behaviour when visiting their country. The study explicitly suggests that it is both collective and individual beliefs that drive Indonesian patients, who have the sufficient resources, to visit Malaysia because of better quality and affordability available there compared to Indonesian medical services. Second, this study raises a fundamental question about Indonesian stakeholders in the medical industry. In the near future, this type of medical tourism behaviour will, without a doubt, affect the Indonesian economy at large.

Originality/value

The contributions of this study are twofold. First, compared to previous studies that focussed specifically on the developed countries, this study focusses on Indonesian consumers’ point of view as an emerging country towards Malaysia’s medical tourism business. Second, this study provides quantifiable insights on the Indonesia-Malaysia medical tourism phenomenon, which previously has been frequently discussed, but only using a qualitative exploratory approach.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present a state-of-the-art review pertaining to the topic of multi-actor innovation in the music industry. Because of the changing nature of the marketing paradigm from product dominant to service dominant, as well as the emerging paradigm of open, collaborative and co-innovation, this study attempts to integrate and map the previous papers that have examined the concept of multi-actor innovation in the context of the music industry.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review is carried out to produce the analysis. Various scholarly articles from well-known databases are taken into considerations in this study. These papers are then classified based on the types of innovation, category and sub-category of innovation, value capture and value creation, as well as its general characteristics. This classification is primarily aimed at mapping the development of previous studies in the current field and examining the current research gaps to propose future research agendas.

Findings

Previous researchers have shown that innovation concepts have been developed into various streams, namely, closed, open, collaborative and co-innovation. In addition to this point, the debates regarding the consumers’ roles in the market have pinpointed that innovation also calls for more participative forms rather than isolated. Nevertheless, discussions that pertain to open, collaborative and co-innovation in the context of the music business, have still been lacking and, therefore, demand more explanations.

Originality/value

This study is the first to present the topic of multi-actor innovation in the music business to the scholarly literature. Based on the review carried out in this study, scholars that are particularly interested in the field of open, collaborative and co-innovation within the context of the music industry can comprehend the development of previous discussions and, therefore, justify future research agendas.

Abstract

Purpose

In addition to being one of the most commonly purchased items by infant caretakers, disposable baby diapers (DBDs) are among the most detrimental products to the environment. Shifting to a diapering method that is less harmful to the environment is an example of pro-environmental conduct. Hence, this study aims to examine how motivation, subjective norms, perceived benefits and perceived threats influence pro-environmental behavior (PEB) intention.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses a two-stage disjoint approach of partial least squares structural equation modeling to examine the data. In the conceptual model, a combination of reflective-reflective second-order constructs is used in the motivation, perceived benefits and perceived threats. A total of 233 respondents from a developing economy in Southeast Asia provide the data.

Findings

This study suggests that perceived benefits (i.e. environmental, monetary and symbol) and threats (i.e. susceptibility and severity) are significant determinants of PEB. Surprisingly, motivation and subjective norms had no significant relationship with consumers' adoption of non-DBD alternatives.

Research limitations/implications

To persuade caretakers to act in an environmentally responsible manner, the findings of this study imply that, where relevant, considerations for a wide variety of benefits and health risks should be made apparent. Environmental, financial and symbolic benefits should be shared with prospective target audiences. Caretakers should be warned of probable health effects of not being environmentally friendly. This study argues that caretakers' lack of information of non-DBD options may explain the insignificance of subjective norms and motivation.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the social marketing literature by examining the influence of motivation, subjective norms, perceived benefits and perceived threats on the intention to use more-environmentally friendly alternatives to DBDs as a manifestation of PEB.

Abstract

Purpose

Using a hierarchical component model conceptualization, this study aims to investigate the moderating role of perceived corporate social responsibility (CSR) dimensions (i.e., economic, environmental and social) on the impact of brand awareness towards consumer relationship intention.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used a two-stage disjoint approach of partial least squares structural equation modeling using data from 325 respondents based in a Southeast Asian region. The case of ecolabel brands was chosen as the context of the investigation.

Findings

The results suggest that brand awareness and perceived CSR dimensions positively impact consumer relationship intention. It was also observed that perceived CSR dimensions moderate the relationship between brand awareness and relationship intention. Consumers with more favorable sentiments of economic, environmental and social dimensions as reflected by the firms' CSR programs exhibit a higher degree of relationship intention.

Research limitations/implications

Using the stakeholder theory as well as the brand value chain framework, this study adds to the literature regarding the significance of perceived CSR dimensions to better build and maintain relationships with the targeted customers of an environmentally friendly product. CSR strategies should be emphasized for relevant companies in terms of the economic, environmental and social aspects. According to this research, customer views about the three CSR initiative characteristics may act as a moderator in the interactions between consumer awareness and relationship intention.

Practical implications

CSR may be utilized in addition to traditional marketing communication to represent the firm's unique value proposition in the market. It is vital to create a CSR program that combines economic, environmental and social factors. Firms may collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure that their CSR initiatives include three elements.

Originality/value

This study adds to the literature on the moderating role of perceived CSR dimensions on the relationship of consumer brand awareness and relationship intention using the theoretical lens of the stakeholder theory and the brand value chain.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore textual patterns in ten years of electronic word-of-mouth communications amongst social media (SM) users of the Java Jazz Festival.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a data-scraping technique to gather user-generated content from Twitter. Word-cloud and word-frequency analysis, along with descriptive coding and pattern matching, are used to categorise the initial findings. Trends and differences in terms of the number of tweets over a ten-year period were examined using analysis of variance and seasonality analysis.

Findings

From more than 1.3 million Twitter tweets between 2008 and 2018, this study identified six initial themes. Quantitative analysis revealed that the number of tweets differed significantly in the four quarters of the ten-year period.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this study contrast with the claim that digital media communication generally occurs before a festival begins and are least during the festival. Nevertheless, this study supports the notion that SM interaction results in positive consequences, drives conversations amongst users and increases engagement.

Practical implications

This study offers five practical implications for music festival organisers and related entities.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to provide a systematic and practical data mining and interpretation approach from Twitter within a ten-year period in the Asia Pacific context, through the case of the Java Jazz Festival.

本论文使用网络爬虫技术,从Titter上面搜集用户产生的文本数据。本论文采用文字云和词频分析法,以及描述性编码和模型匹配等方式,来对初步结果进行归类。本论文使用ANOVA和季节性分析的方法对tweets十年中的变化和趋势进行分析检验。

研究结果

本论文通过对在2008年至2018年的超过130万tweets进行分析,初步指出了六大主题。定量分析结果表明十年内四个季节中的tweets数量相差甚大。
