Abstract

Purpose

This paper defines and assesses student learning patterns under the influence of problem-based learning (PBL) and their classification into a reasonable minimum number of classes. Study utilizes PBL implemented in an undergraduate Statistics and Operations Research course for techno-management students at a private university in India.

Design/methodology/approach

Study employs an in situ experiment using a conceptual model based on learning theory. The participant's end-of-semester GPA is Performance Indicator. Integrating PBL with classroom teaching is unique instructional approach to this study. An unsupervised and supervised data mining approach to analyse PBL impact establishes research conclusions.

Findings

The administration of PBL results in improved learning patterns (above-average) for students with medium attendance. PBL, Gender, Math background, Board and discipline are contributing factors to students' performance in the decision tree. PBL benefits a student of any gender with lower attendance.

Research limitations/implications

This study is limited to course students from one institute and does not consider external factors.

Practical implications

Researchers can apply learning patterns obtained in this paper highlighting PBL impact to study effect of every innovative pedagogical study. Classification of students based on learning behaviours can help facilitators plan remedial actions.

Originality/value

1. Clustering is used to extract student learning patterns considering dynamics of student performances over time. Then decision tree is utilized to elicit a simple process of classifying students. 2. Data mining approach overcomes limitations of statistical techniques to provide knowledge impact in presence of demographic characteristics and student attendance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper utilizes data mining to study the effect of Problem Based Learning (PBL), an innovative pedagogical approach that has been implemented in undergraduate education at a private university in India for teaching Statistics and Operations Research (OR) to techno-management students.

Design/methodology/approach

The study follows the assumptions of an in-situ experiment. It employs BBA (IT) and BCA student(s) as a subject and their end of semester GPA as a performance indicator. The pedagogical approach to this study is integrating PBL with classroom teaching. The paper uses a combination of statistics and data mining to analyze the impact of PBL and establish research conclusions.

Findings

The study concludes that the introduction of PBL positively results in an improved GPA for students with a math background. PBL is more effective for BBA (IT) male students. Female students seem to be performing equally well irrespective of the inclusion of PBL. Pattern analysis of shape parameters evidences the impact of PBL, and the results are established through the decision tree and test of proportions.

Research limitations/implications

The study is limited to students from a single institute.

Practical implications

This Pattern analysis, as applied in this paper, can be scaled to evaluate the impact of any innovative pedagogical approach agnostic of the field of study. Facilitators can use the process defined in the paper to implement PBL for teaching Statistics and Operations research. Shape parameters of the batch in the previous semester can be utilized by facilitators to plan remedial action for the next semester by classifying students as desirable/non-desirable. Techno-management institutes can alleviate the dread and fear of mathematical subjects by integrating PBL with classroom teaching.

Originality/value

The study utilizes an innovative analytical approach of combining shape parameters with classification. It further provides uniqueness in arriving at a classification of batch performance as desirable/non-desirable and utilizes data mining to emphasize a delineating impact of PBL across both critical parameters of the batch and the student. The study also defines a framework for the implementation of PBL for a techno-management program in Statistics and Operations Research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how sub-criteria of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) model is structurally connected and influence each other. This paper also tries to find the underpinning logics in the EFQM model.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses the empirical methodology based on assessment scores of 58 different organizations to gauge the underlying structure, develop the construct and establish interlinkages among the various sub-criteria in the EFQM model. Statistical analysis is used to find the impact on results and cross influencing of criteria at the sub-criteria level. The factorial analysis is carried out using the Doe technique to create factorial plots for result categories (customer results, people results, society results and business results). The approach is to unravel (1) the role played by each sub-criterion of the model, (2) the effects of sub-criteria on the results of the EFQM model and (3) the influence of sub-criteria on the managerial aspects of the model in an organizational context.

Findings

The EFQM sub-criteria are categorised as promoters, proponents, defenders or detractors based on their impact on the results and cross-influence on each other. The study unfolded seven sub-criteria positively impacting the results and one sub-criterion negatively impacting the results if not handled properly. Out of 32 sub-criteria, nine sub-criteria are influencing more than six other sub-criteria.

Originality/value

The paper investigates, for the first time: (1) the role played by each sub-criteria of the model; (2) the relationships that are produced between these sub-criteria on the EFQM results and (3) identify how such sub-criteria would influence the managerial aspects of the model in an organizational context. This research develops underlying logics in the EFQM model using Doe factorial methods for overcoming the multi-collinearity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper model and prioritizes barriers to product development in medical device manufacturing industries using an integrated “structural equation modelling” (SEM) and “fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution” (FTOPSIS) framework.

Design/methodology/approach

Barriers to medical device development (MDD) are adopted from literature. The initial structural model is proposed, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis are used to determine factor loading and model fit, respectively. Further, FTOPSIS is used to rank the barriers and sensitivity analysis is carried to check the robustness of results. The results are discussed in detail and the recommendations to overcome the barriers are presented.

Findings

Barriers analysed and prioritized in this research significantly hinder the MDD. The expert survey is used to develop an initial structural equation model of barriers to MDD, find the reliability and validity of the model. Based on the opinion of the experts, the barriers are divided into three categories – internal, policy and induced barriers. FTOPSIS is applied to rank and prioritize the barriers based on views from these three classes of experts. More reliance on imported devices leading to increased imports (B11) and lack of uniform regulatory standards (B6) are found to have the highest rank together, indicating these to be the most important barriers from the perspective considered here. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the factors are less sensitive to the weights of criteria further confirming the reliability of the initial solution.

Research limitations/implications

The prioritization of barriers may vary based upon experts. Policymakers, existing and new device developers need to give utmost importance to these barriers, which will help to accelerate the indigenous development of medical devices to overcome the present dependence on imports.

Practical implications

This paper demonstrates an integrated structural based modelling and prioritization technique for statistical modelling and prioritization of barriers to MDD. The results and recommendations will help policymakers and manufacturers to increase the indigenous share of medical devices. The integrated methodology can be effectively applied where the need for the combined quantitative and qualitative approach is there.

Originality/value

This paper demonstrates an effective structural based modelling and prioritization technique. It can be effectively applied in various fields, it will help policymakers and manufacturers to increase the indigenous share of medical devices.
