At the 2008 International Conference on Transport Survey Methods in Annecy, France, transport survey methodologists and practitioners shared their experience with keeping abreast of the data needs of a rapidly changing world. Over the past decade, this has translated into the need for: an expanded travel survey toolkit; methodological innovation for surveys of freight and public transport operations; a growing use of data collection and processing technologies; a need to align surveys with other data streams; and an increased interest in the comparability of international datasets on personal travel and commodity movements in an era of globalisation. We discuss how these guided the choice and scope of the five themes around which both the Annecy Conference and this book were organised.

This paper explores the rural experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic and seeks to understand the variations in these experiences between rural residents working in health care and those outside of health care occupations. This paper considers the impacts on physical health and access to health care (including challenges related to caretaking) as well as on mental health.

We interviewed 16 individuals living in rural communities in New Mexico between August and November 2020. These interviews were conducted through a virtual meeting platform (Zoom) or by phone and recorded. Then these interviews were transcribed and analyzed for key themes, and all themes were coded by at least two team members for inter-rater reliability.

Rural residency is linked to a wide range of health and health care inequities. From health care provider shortages, lack of internet infrastructure, and disruptions in access to resources when the closest resources are outside of the state, rural residents in New Mexico faced a wide range of unique challenges during the pandemic. This study also details from where rural residents obtain their health information, and we consider how politicization of the pandemic has impacted rural communities. The experiences of rural residents demonstrate how some policies fail to take into consideration the unique contexts of rural communities. All participants strongly identified with their roles as members of rural communities.

These interviews were conducted prior to the peak of pandemic transmission in these communities, so a follow-up should be conducted which reflects on the later stages. Future pandemic scholarship should consider the experiences of rural communities and address the unique challenges, needs, and strengths in developing best practices.

This paper provides unique insight into the lived experience of rural residents during the pandemic, and highlights disparities and challenges faced by health care workers as well as rural community members more broadly.

In this chapter, we have proposed that an important approach to understanding occupational stress and well-being among racial and ethnic minority workers is to integrate the occupational health disparities paradigm into work stress research. As such, the current chapter provides a state-of-the-art review of the existing literature on occupational health disparities for Latinos, Asian Americans, and African Americans. Each of the three sections has highlighted the unique occupational health problems encountered by the specific racial and ethnic group as well as the research and policy gaps. We end with a series of recommendations for future research.

This chapter opens with the current thinking about sensory processing difficulties acknowledging the works, opposing stand points of the Sensory Integration Community, Ayres and APA and discussing implications for current assessment, treatment options and provision.

An experiential perspective is then presented from Graves’ work as an occupational therapist in CAMHS, from identification of commonly recognised presentations which can indicate sensory processing difficulties which include: ASD, ADHD, ‘fussy eater’, ‘emotional dysregulation’ and ‘meltdowns’ to detailing how these difficulties can be assessed and formulated with use of the sensory profile. Then the authors provide the practical examples of how to screen for these difficulties, explain them to young people, parents and schools and manage them through esnsory activities and environmental adaptations. The contributions from Howl’s experiences by working in the African Caribbean Community Initiative and as a specialist psychological wellbeing ractitioner improve access to psychological therapies for the ‘hard to reach’ population, consideration has been given to adapting these resources with the intention of them being more acceptable and accessible for use in work within BAME communities.

The chapter concludes with questions about the future implications for service provisions for people with sensory processing difficulties and how raised awareness of these difficulties might impact on other evidence-based diagnoses and treatments such as cognitive behaviour therapy (drawing on the authors recent learning on the CYP IAPT CBT course) for anxiety presentations.
