Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to establish a modified variable coefficient calculation model to analyse the control parameter effect on the iron loss of switched reluctance motor under pulse width modulation (PWM) mode.

Design/methodology/approach

The finite element model is solved to get the flux density by python language. Due to non-sinusoidal flux density feature and the effect of PWM excitation, the Fourier transform is applied in consideration of harmonic components. To improve the accuracy of iron loss computation, the effect of minor loops is considered by using the rain-flow counting method.

Findings

When the speed fluctuates around the set speed and the fluctuations are relatively small, it is useful to reduce the iron loss with smaller duty ratio and turn-on angle or greater duty ratio and smaller turn-off angle. The iron loss is less affected by chopping frequency, while the iron loss increases obviously with higher conduction angles. The iron loss under non-energy-returnable-voltage-chop mode is greater than energy-returnable-voltage-chop mode.

Originality/value

The modified variable coefficient MIEM5 iron loss model is proposed to improve the accuracy of iron loss calculation. Then the control parameters such as duty ratio, chopping frequency, turn on angle and turn off angle are analysed under PWM mode.

Abstract

Purpose

An improved simulation model of switched reluctance motor (SRM) for steady-state operation that considers the core losses in the stator and rotor is established to obtain the steady performance of the high-speed SRM during the design, analysis and control of SRM driving system more accurately.

Design/methodology/approach

The transient core loss model for the material and SRM is presented. Then a new method for calculating the flux density of the motor in real time is introduced, and a steady-state simulation model of the SRM including real-time transient core losses calculation model is established according to the transient flux density. Because the transient core losses calculated by above method are the total core losses of the motor, a core losses distribution method is proposed and the steady-state simulation model of the SRM including the distributed core losses’ effect on the phase winding is established.

Findings

The comparison results show that the proposed model has higher accuracy than the traditional model, excluding core losses, especially at the moments when phase voltage is turn-on and turn-off. The proportion of the core losses to the motor losses increases with the increase in speed. So, the core losses’ effect on the steady-state performance of the high-speed SRM cannot be ignored.

Originality/value

The method to obtain flux density in the real time is presented and the improved steady-state simulation model of SRM that considering transient core losses is proposed.

The purpose of this paper is to achieve the multi-objective optimization design of novel tubular switched reluctance motor (TSRM).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to achieve the multi-objective optimization design of novel tubular switched reluctance motor (TSRM).

Design/methodology/approach

First, the structure and initial dimensions of TSRM are obtained based on design criteria and requirements. Second, the sensitivity analysis rules, process and results of TSRM are performed. Third, three optimization objectives are determined by the average electromagnetic force, smoothing coefficient and copper loss ratio. The analytic hierarchy process-entropy method-a technique for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution-grey relation analysis comprehensive evaluation algorithm is used to optimize TSRM. Finally, a prototype is manufactured, a hardware platform is built and static and dynamic experimental validations are carried out.

Findings

The sensitivity analysis reveals that parameters significantly impact the performance of TSRM. The results of multi-objective optimization show that the average electromagnetic force and smoothing coefficient after optimization are better than before, and the copper loss ratio reduces slightly. The experimental and simulated results of TSRM are consistent, which verifies the accuracy of TSRM.

Research limitations/implications

In this paper, only three optimization objectives are selected in the multi-objective optimization process. To improve the performance of TSRM, the heating characteristics, such as iron loss, can be considered as the optimization objective for a more comprehensive analysis of TSRM performance.

Originality/value

A novel motor structure is designed, combining the advantages of the TSRM and the linear motor. The established sensitivity analysis rules are scientific and suitable for the effects of various parameters on motor performance. The proposed multi-objective optimization algorithm is a comprehensive evaluation algorithm. It considers subjective weight and objective weight and fully uses the original data and the relational degree between the optimization objectives.

Abstract

Purpose

While the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend provides benefits for employees, it also poses security risks to organizations. This study explores whether and how employees decide to adopt BYOD practices when they encounter information security–related conflict.

Design/methodology/approach

Using survey data from 235 employees of Chinese enterprises and applying partial least squares based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), we test a series of hypotheses.

Findings

The results suggest that information security–related conflict elicits information security fatigue among employees. As their information security fatigue increases, employees become less likely to adopt BYOD practices. In addition, information security–related conflict has an indirect effect on employee's BYOD adoption through the full mediation of information security fatigue.

Practical implications

This study provides practical implications to adopt BYOD in the workplace through conflict management measures and emotion management strategies. Conflict management measures focused on the reducing of four facets of information security–related conflict, such as improve organization's privacy policies and help employees to build security habits. Emotion management strategies highlighted the solutions to reduce fatigue through easing conflict, such as involving employees in the development or update of information security policies to voice their demands of privacy and other rights.

Originality/value

Our study extends knowledge by focusing on the barriers to employees' BYOD adoption when considering information security in the workplace. Specifically, this study takes a conflict perspective and builds a multi-faceted construct of information security–related conflict. Our study also extends information security behavior research by revealing an emotion-based mediation effect, that of information security fatigue, to explore the mechanism underlying the influence of information security–related conflict on employee behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the emotion-based mediator of information security fatigue in the relationship between employees’ information security–related stress (SRS) and information security policy (ISP) compliance intention and the effects of psychological capital (PsyCap) on relieving SRS and promoting compliance.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors tested a series of hypotheses by applying partial least squares–based structural equation modeling to survey data from 488 employees in Chinese enterprises.

Findings

The results suggest that the relationship between SRS and ISP compliance intention is fully mediated by information security fatigue. Employees’ SRS promotes their information security fatigue, which reduces their intention to follow ISPs. In addition, employees with high PsyCap may experience low levels of SRS and information security fatigue, which promotes their willingness to comply with ISPs.

Originality/value

This study extends knowledge by introducing information security fatigue and PsyCap to the field of information security management, and it calls attention to the effects on information security behaviors of employee emotions and positive psychological resources in an organization. The authors reveal the emotion-based mediating effect of information security fatigue and the positive influence of PsyCap in information security management.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of single parameters for temperature characteristics of oil film in port plate pair and the relationship of calculated results and experimental results under different viscosity.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper established the mathematical model of oil film of port plate pair, calculated the energy equation of port plate pair, simulated for the oil film and temperature distribution and selected different kinds of lubricants to analyze the calculated value and the experimental value.

Findings

The results show: temperature rise of port plate pair is reduced with the increase of oil viscosity; temperature rise of port plate pair is decreased with rise of initial oil film thickness; temperature rise of port plate pair is increased with the rise of cylinder body speed, inclination angle and sealing belt width; and through the comparison of calculated value and experimental value, under the same viscosity and cylinder speed, experimental results are bigger.

Originality/value

This paper used the methods that the temperature of port plate pair was calculated numerically, and the results were consistent with experimental results, so it can get high precision.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the cognition–affect–conation pattern, this study explores the factors that affect the intention to use facial recognition services (FRS). The study adopts the driving factor perspective to examine how network externalities influence FRS use intention through the mediating role of satisfaction and the barrier factor perspective to analyze how perceived privacy risk affects FRS use intention through the mediating role of privacy cynicism.

Design/methodology/approach

The data collected from 478 Chinese FRS users are analyzed via partial least squares-based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The study produces the following results. (1) FRS use intention is motivated directly by the positive affective factor of satisfaction and the negative affective factor of privacy cynicism. (2) Satisfaction is affected by cognitive factors related to network externalities. Perceived complementarity and perceived compatibility, two indirect network externalities, positively affect satisfaction, whereas perceived critical mass, a direct network externality, does not significantly affect satisfaction. In addition, perceived privacy risk generates privacy cynicism. (3) Resistance to change positively moderates the relationship between privacy cynicism and intention to use FRS.

Originality/value

This study extends knowledge on people's use of FRS by exploring affect- and cognitive-based factors and finding that the affect-based factors (satisfaction and privacy cynicism) play fully mediating roles in the relationship between the cognitive-based factors and use intention. This study also expands the cognitive boundaries of FRS use by exploring the functional condition between affect-based factors and use intention, that is, the moderating role of resistance to use.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to reveal the mechanism of humble leadership inducing abusive supervision from the low-status compensation perspective, examining the mediation role of leader perceived thread to status. Besides, the moderation effect of regulatory focus on the mediation path is discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

This study conducted a three-wave longitudinal survey. The data was collected from 438 leaders and their employees in five Chinese enterprises. This study used Mplus 7.4 and adopted a bootstrapping technique for data analysis.

Findings

Humble leadership has a positive effect on leader perceived threat to status. Leader perceived threat to status plays a mediation role between humble leadership and leader abusive supervision. Leader regulatory focus is the “gate valve” that humble leadership fosters leader abusive supervision. That is, when the leader promotion focus is high, leader perceived threat to status bred by humble leadership is low, resulting in less abusive supervision. When the leader prevention focus is high, humble leadership brings relatively more abusive supervision through perceived threat to status.

Originality/value

This study explores why humble leadership breeds abusive supervision behaviors and reveals the mechanism behind the negative effect of humble leadership based on low-status compensation theory. This study not only promotes the continuous development of the field of humble leadership research through empirical research but also provides guidance for effectively suppressing the negative effects of humble leadership, promoting strengths and avoiding weaknesses and suppressing inappropriate management behaviors in management practice.

Abstract

Purpose

There is a rise in interest on the topic of consumer-brand relationships (CBRs) among practitioners and academics. Consumers are said to build relationships with brands that have a personality congruent with their own. The purpose of this paper is to investigate two types of brand personality traits, namely, responsible brands and active brands to predict prominent CBR constructs, including brand awareness, brand trust, and brand loyalty.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was based on an electronic survey of 339 respondents. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data.

Findings

The results show that brand personality positively affects the three CBR constructs. Specifically, the focus is shifted to the two major personality dimensions, responsible and active, respectively. The results indicate that an active brand is a stronger predictor of brand awareness compared to a responsible brand. However, a responsible brand is a stronger predictor of brand trust as well as brand loyalty compared to an active brand. Surprisingly, the results display that active brands lower brand trust and brand loyalty.

Practical implications

This finding informs brand managers that projecting active brand personality leads to higher awareness. However, projecting more responsible brand leads to greater trust and loyalty. The study highlights that having one personality may not be sufficient to develop an enduring CBR, but a brand personality must “evolve” and progress as the relationship develops over time. Such dynamic brand personality may provide a more long-lasting brand strategy and a greater source of competitive advantage.

Originality/value

The present study contributes to the marketing literature in three different ways. First, this study adds to the body of knowledge on the relationship between brand personality and CBR constructs using the new measure of BPS. Second, this study assesses the individual level of the new BPS, particularly responsibility and activity, on the three CBR constructs, and in doing so, the study responds to previous studies’ calls to assess the individual capacity of the brand personality dimensions to get consumer preference or loyalty. Third, the study displays which ones of the two dimensions in the new BPS (i.e. responsible and active) may be better predictors to the three CBR constructs.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to optimise the effect of pre-oxidation on hot corrosion behaviour of Tribaloy T-900 at 900 °C in mixed Na2SO4 and K2SO4.

Design/methodology/approach

Prior to hot corrosion experiment, pre-oxidation treatments were carried in ambient air at 900 °C for 1, 5 and 10 h, respectively. The hot corrosion experiments were performed in a box type furnace at 900 °C. Both surfaces of specimens were brushed with saturated salt solution of 75 wt.% Na2SO4 + 25 wt.% K2SO4. After brushing, the salt-coated specimens were placed in electric stove to ensure drying of salt. After drying, presence of 3 mg/cm2 salt on specimen’s surface was ensured through weighting.

Findings

The 1-h pre-oxidation treatment prior to hot corrosion showed superior hot corrosion resistance against molten salt attack. An optimum pre-oxidation time of 1 h helped timely formation of protective Cr2O3 layer and inhibited the formation of less stable and porous surface oxides of Ni and Mo during hot corrosion.

Originality/value

Pre-oxidation effect on hot corrosion behaviour of refractory metal (such as Mo in investigated alloy) containing alloy has never been reported previously. Refractory metals oxide (e.g. MoO3) could transform the corrosion phenomena to catastrophic failure through acidic fluxing.
