Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the visualizer interface that has been developed for the first phase of an automatic meaning extraction (AME) system.

Design/methodology/approach

AME system was developed to automatically extract concepts and their relations across texts from all domains of knowledge. One challenge for the developer is to create interface tools that help the users use the system. This paper describes a visualizer interface that can map the concepts and relations in the form of two‐dimensional graph or network.

Findings

Using this visualizer, users can maximize the use of AME system by allowing the visualization of the concepts' networks results. Users can search for a concept and view the relationships of the concept to other concepts. Those relationships can be traced back to the source sentences in the original documents through the “Show Text” function.

Originality/value

This visualizer is useful in solving the problem of visualizing the relationships between concepts across varied domains of knowledge. The extraction of relationships in the AME system is based upon a unique connector‐based relation extraction. It is particularly appropriate for target users such as the researcher, educators and learners. The visualizer implements the Java Universal Network/Graph Framework to provide a few functions that enable users to manipulate the concepts graph.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the investigation of damage severity of reinforced concrete (RC) beam subjected to increasing fatigue loading using intensity of acoustic emission (AE) signal.

Design/methodology/approach

Together 17 RC beams with dimension of 150 × 150 × 750 mm were prepared. Third point loading fatigue test was performed based on load at the first crack (Pcr) and the ultimate static load (Pult). The frequency of 1 Hz was used with the increasing fatigue loadings, 0.5Pcr (P1), 0.8Pcr (P2), 1.0Pcr (P3), 0.2Pult (P4), 0.5Pult (P5) and 0.6Pult (P6). The damage severity of crack for each phase of loading allowed the identification of the crack modes of the beams, namely, Zone A (no significant emission), Zone B (minor), Zone C (intermediate), Zone D (follow-up) and Zone E (major).

Findings

The intensity analysis indicated clear trend with respect to crack propagation in the beam and, hence, can be used to monitor the crack occurrence in the beam.

Originality/value

The intensity analysis has been carried out for the beam subjected to increasing fatigue loading. The analysis was based on the AE data obtained from channel basis and located event.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between perceived supervisor support (PSS), work–life balance (WLB) and employee well-being (EW) of millennial employees. More specifically, the study explores the mediation impact of WLB in the relationship between PSS and EW.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 235 full-time millennial employees working for the financial sector in Turkey. The aforesaid relationships were assessed through structural equation modeling and the bootstrapping procedure.

Findings

The results indicate that PSS positively influenced WLB which, in turn, impacted EW.

Research limitations/implications

Since this is a cross-sectional research study, causal inferences cannot be inferred from the research outcomes.

Practical implications

The findings show that supervisors play a critical role in enhancing employees’ ability to maintain a balance between work and personal obligations which improves their well-being. This implies that the supervisor’s actions impact the well-being of employees, which, in turn, influences how an employee perceives the organization. So employers need to formulate policies and programs that encourage work–life balance in the workplace so as to improve EW beyond the workplace, as improving EW and supporting employees can help create a healthy workforce helping organizations to avoid unnecessary health costs.

Originality/value

Only a few research efforts have been conducted toward exploring the mediation role of WLB between PSS and EW. The findings advance the understanding of how PSS could enhance EW in a mediation model.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore how informal pawnbrokers and informal pawners interpret the existence of the informal pawnshop in the traditional market in Surakarta, Indonesia, with the main focus to determine the applicability of informal pawnshop development model.

Design/methodology/approach

The research used the qualitative method with the phenomenological approach using interview method to fully comprehend the informants’ views regarding the informal pawnshop existence in traditional markets in Surakarta, Indonesia. The applicability of informal pawnshop development model is required for Muslim market vendors. Charitable institutions shall participate in the development of the model by empowering (zakat, infaq, shadaqah and waqf) funds to help Muslims vendors in the traditional markets for additional capital in accordance with Islamic laws for a pawnshop.

Findings

The result of the research shows that the existence of informal pawning in the traditional markets is difficult to avoid as both informal pawnbrokers and informal pawners need one another. Most vendors in the traditional markets are Muslims. Islam teaches that loan interest is categorized as forbidden riba. Meanwhile, in the informal pawning practices, the informal pawnbrokers charge loan interest to the informal pawners.

Originality/value

The objective of this study is to investigate to what extent the Islamic pawn shops motivated the people through interest-free system. However, in past, tradition markets facilitate the people, but they charged a huge against it with interest (riba).

Abstract

Purpose

Agricultural accounting is gaining ground across different disciplines, rendering it a significant research area. This study aims to assess agricultural accounting research for the past 93 years in terms of publication frequency, subject areas, topics that received the most attention among researchers, as well as the institutions that contribute to this subject area.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a bibliometric analysis collected through the Scopus database. The sample included 3,612 documents. The analyzed variables include the number of publications per year, documents published, country, author affiliation, keywords and active institutions. Analyses include graphical network maps.

Findings

The findings of this study reveal the importance of supportive institutions, human capabilities and international collaboration in aiding research and development. It provides an overview of agricultural accounting literature over the years and aid researchers in this research domain to explore more studies and develop better arguments. The results also indicate the continuing growth in the number of publications in recent years by authorship; country include the USA, China, the UK, Australia and Germany; institutes include Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wageningen University and Research Centre; and the subject areas include Environmental Science; Agriculture and Biology sciences; and Social Sciences. The most frequent keywords connecting to author’s area of research, as highlighted in Figure 5, include agriculture, accounting, water accounting, environmental accounting and cost analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to determine the effect of personality on professionalism.

Design/methodology/approach

This research was conducted in Makassar Police Office in Makassar City. The reason for conducting the research in the police officer was the low performance of police officers in Makassar Police while the workload was very high. The population in this study were all 1,185 police officers in Makassar Police Office. Using the probability sampling technique, there were 299 police officers selected as respondents. Further, this study employs descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistical analysis using generalized structure component analysis (GSCA) as data analysis methods.

Findings

The result found that there is a significant effect of personality on professionalism and OCB. Different results are obtained on the effect of personality on performance, which has no significant effect. However, there is an indirect effect of personality on performance through professionalism and OCB as mediating variables. The results also found that there is a significant influence between Professionalism on OCB and performance, as well as a significant influence between OCB on Performance.

Originality/value

This study focus to determine the effect of personality on professionalism. It has never been done before, so this study will contribute a new empirical explanation on both relationships. In addition to differences in the use of constructs and measurements, this research is also different in terms of the analysis unit. This study examines the effect of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) on the performance of members/employees. This research is different from previous researches which generally examine the effect of OCB with group performance such as performed by George and Bettenhausen (1990), Podsakoff et al. (1997), which both found a close association between OCB and group performance. This study examines the performance of individual members because the tasks of members of the police force require professional ability in individuals who are expected to give a good image to the police in general.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents the second part of the investigation on resistance to elevated temperatures of a proposed hybrid composite concrete (NCSF-Crete) mix. The composite including nano metakaolin (NC) and steel fibers (SF) in addition to regular concrete components has proven -in the first published part-earlier promoted fresh concrete behavior, and to have reduced loss in compressive strength after exposure to a wide range of elevated temperatures. This presented work evaluates another two critical mechanical characteristics for the proposed composite -namely- splitting and bond strengths.

Design/methodology/approach

A modified formula correlating splitting and compressive strength (28 days) based on experiments results for NCSF is proposed and compared to formulas derived for regular concrete in different design codes. Finally, both spitting and bond strengths are evaluated pre- and post-exposure to elevated temperatures reaching 600 °C for two hours.

Findings

The proposed NCSF-Crete shows remarkable fire endurance, especially in promoting bond strength as after 600 °C heat exposure tests, it maintained strength equivalent to 70% of a regular concrete control mix at room temperature. Improving residual splitting strength was very significant up to 450 °C exposure.

Research limitations/implications

Obvious deterioration is monitored in splitting resistance for all concretes at 600 °C.

Practical implications

This proposed composite improved elevated heats resistance of the most significant concrete mechanical properties.

Social implications

Using a more green and sustainable constituents in the composite.

Originality/value

The proposed composite gathers the merits of using NC and SF, each has been investigated separately as an addition to concrete mixes.
