Abstract

Purpose

India is a home to the second largest Muslim population in the world. It is equally crucial to understand the attitude of non-Muslim population towards the interest-free banking in India. The firms desirous of entering into this nascent field in India are required to know the aspirations and motivations of both Muslims and non-Muslims with respect to interest-free banking. For a large number of Muslims interest-free banking may be a matter of adhering to their faith, but for the non-Muslim customers it has to address real issues like security, risk minimisation, profitability, etc.

Design/Methodology/Approach

The present study is an attempt to understand the perceptions of Indian customers towards Islamic banking. For this purpose, a representative sample of 259 respondents is surveyed with the help of a structured questionnaire developed for this purpose.

Findings

It has been found that there are differences in the attitude of Muslims and non-Muslims towards Islamic banking. Surprisingly both groups have a similar perception about the institutions of Islamic banking. Findings of the study reveal that the attitude of Indian customers can be classified into factors like awareness, ideology, implementation, features and institutions. Therefore, such factors should be considered seriously by the Islamic banks in designing their marketing strategies.

Research Limitations/Implication

This is a survey-based study. Hence a representative sample is mandatory. Due care has been taken to arrive at a sample size which is representative of the population; however, a large sample size shall lead to better results.

Practical Implications

This study can help decision makers to identify the major factors that may shape the attitude of Indian customers towards Islamic banks. This should also be of some help to the management of commercial banks in devising appropriate marketing strategies for reaching and attracting young customers.

Originality/Value

The originality of this study lies in the fact that it is a pioneering study in the Indian context which brings out the attitudinal differences between Muslims and non-Muslims with respect to Islamic banking. Further, the classification of attitude of Indian customers into factors like awareness, ideology, implementation, features and institutions adds to the originality of the study. Both these aspects of this study add value to the existing literature in the field of Islamic banking.

Abstract

The prolonged army rule in the country has affected the policymaking procedure of the state. Specifically, defence and foreign policies of the country are normally decided by the armed forces of Pakistan as per their own priorities, which is against the norms of democratic culture and supremacy of the civilian rule.

The control of important decision-making process in the hands of the armed forces has generated an arms race in the subcontinent. The major portion of the national budget is being spent on the defence forces and other sectors such as education and health and social welfare are not getting their due share from the revenue of the country. The continued sense of insecurity and animosity with neighbour countries, especially India, has resulted in speeding the acquisition of sophisticated arms in the country.

This research discusses the effects of the military's role in the decision-making of the country and its impacts on the relations between India and Pakistan. The confidence building measures and peacemaking process in South Asia is dependent on the attitude of the military of both the countries.

Abstract

Geotechnologies have a long tradition in several areas of society and research. The recent development of the ‘Internet of Everything’ (IoE) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies opened several doors to the contribution of tourism. Emergent technologies contributions to tourism and planning such as web mapping, augmented reality (AR), crowdsourcing and crowdsensing are relatively recent, and there is a lack of research around their potential for Creative Tourism enhancement. For example, combining web mapping with AR or storytelling can be an excellent contribution to operators, planners and tourists. For research purposes, new opportunities are open, particularly by integrating community-shared data. It is well known for the popularity of social networks, the exponential growth of photo sharing, but few studies have been implemented to understand their contribution to research. This chapter focuses on emerging geotechnologies concerning cultural mapping, Creative Tourism and sustainability. Since it is a new growing niche, more research is needed to develop and understand the potential of new approaches. Besides traditional techniques such as quantitative (e.g. surveys) and qualitative ones (e.g. interviews, focus groups and world café), it revises the role of geotechnologies on Creative Tourism development and growing activities. Results from case studies from Europe are analysed.

Abstract

The question of civilian supremacy over managing state affairs has been revisiting Pakistan time and again; the case is the same these days. Assuming its strategic location at the crossroads of Middle East-Central South Asia, the country has a lot of potential not only to prosper and progress, but it can play a pivotal role in restoring peace and stability in the region.

Pakistan's civilian leadership has mostly supported the concept of peaceful coexistence with all neighboring countries, but the theory of animosity propagated by Pakistan's army with its neighbor, especially India, has kept the world's sixth most populous nation in a state of war ever since its inception. This chapter discuses the perpetual conflict between the civil-military approaches and how it is effecting regional peace.
