Abstract

The atmospheric turn can be understood as a departure from the occidental dominant thing and event ontologies and opens the way to a situation ontology, in which subjective-bodily felt being-in is at the centre. The focus shifts from objective things or events to subjectively experienceable facts of being within situations and atmospheres. Atmospheres have an affective content, a peculiar non-dimensional spatiality and a hybrid status beyond the typical occidental dualisms, such as subject and object or inner and outer world. If the philosophical potential of the atmospheric turn is highlighted and taken seriously, then fundamental new perspectives in thought and action can reveal themselves.

Abstract

The Retail Consortium rarely misses an opportunity to criticise the Government's policy on margin controls or inflation, and naturally had its own comments to make when the Price Commission published its second quarter report at the end of July. Its findings were that profits in both food and non‐food retailing were (and presumably still are) at a very low ebb and margin controls were becoming more and more of an irrelevance when the average net for the former was 51.2% of reference levels, while for the latter it was only marginally better at 57%. All of which bears out the sort of criticism voiced by most retail group chairmen in this year's annual reports and accounts. And of course fixed overheads are increasing at an amazing rate, with all the huge rises in rates, rents and power.

Abstract

An autoethnographic account is given in order to depict the building of the author's musical subjectivity through the specific modes of cross-generational and peer-to-peer interaction involving material and emotional investments, discursive constraints, and transgressions. The event of discovering the “sound of silence” is brought in contrast to the more encoded experiences of classical music, especially operatic. Emotionally charged musical events and rituals are revisited (narrated) together with accounts of transgressing the boundaries of inherited musical environments and learned patterns of musical appreciation.

Abstract

Presents a conceptual framework for understanding the meanings of polychronic behavior for individuals. A “created” meaning perspective, arguing that cultural, social, and personality differences influence how the meaning of polychronic behavior is interpreted at the individual level is presented. These meanings through a phenomenological study of polychronic behavior in the workplace for both traditional, “mainstream” Americans and recent Latin American immigrants are explored. Implications for managers and workgroups are also explored.
