Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to optimize input parameters of particle size and applied load to determine minimum weight loss and friction coefficient for Al2O3/SiC particles-reinforced hybrid composites by using Taguchi’s design methodology.

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental results demonstrate that the applied size is the major parameter influencing the weight loss for all samples, followed by particle size. The applied load, however, was found to have a negligible effect on the friction coefficient. Moreover, the optimal combination of the testing parameters was predicted. The predicted weight loss and friction coefficient for all the test samples were found to lie close to those of the experimentally observed ones.

Findings

The optimum levels of the control factors to obtain better weight loss and friction coefficient were A8 (particle size, 60 μm) and B1 (applied load, 20 N), respectively. Taguchi’s orthogonal design was developed to predict the quality characteristics (weight loss and friction coefficient) within the selected range of process parameters (particle size and applied load). The results were validated through ANOVA.

Originality/value

Firstly, hybrid MMCs ceramic powders were produced and then mechanical tests and optimization were performed.

Design/methodology/approach

A metal matrix composite AA8090-WC-ZrC was fabricated using stir casting method and its tribological behavior was investigated. Totally, five composites viz. AA/Z, AA/W, AA/WZ (1:3), AA/WZ (1:1) & AA/WZ (3:1) were prepared. Micro hardness, tensile and wear study were performed on the fabricated composites and the results were compared with AA8090 alloy

Findings

Vickers hardness test resulted that the AA/W composite showed the higher hardness value of 160 HB compared to other materials due to the reinforcing effect of WC particles with high hardness. Tensile test reported that the AA/W composite displayed the maximum tensile strength of 502 MPa owing to the creation of more dislocation density. Further, wear study showed that the AA/W composite exhibited the least wear rate of 0.0011 mm3/m because of the more resisting force offered by the WC particles. Furthermore, the AA/W composite showed the slightest mass loss of 0.0028 g and lower COF value of 0.31 due to the hinder effect of WC particle to the movement of atoms in AA8090 alloy

Originality/value

This work is original in the field of aerospace engineering and materials science which deals with the fabrication of AA8090 alloy with the reinforcement particles such as tungsten carbide and zirconium carbide. The impact of the combination of hybrid particles and their volume fractions on the tribological properties has been investigated in this work. This work would provide new scientific information to society.

Abstract

Purpose

Aviation field requires a material with greater tribological characteristics to withstand the critical climate conditions. Hence, it is of paramount importance to enhance the wear resistance of material. AZ91D magnesium alloy is a light weight material used in the aviation field for the construction work. The purpose of this study is to augment the wear properties of AZ91D alloy by reinforcing with hard particles such as tungsten carbide (WC) and silicon dioxide (SiO2).

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, three types of composites were fabricated, namely, AZ91D – WC, AZ91D – SiO2 and AZ91D – (WC + SiO2) by ball milling method, and the tribological properties were analyzed using pin-on-disc apparatus.

Findings

Results showed that the hardness of AZ91D alloy was greatly improved due to the reinforcing effects of WC and SiO2 particles. Wear study showed that wear rate of AZ91D alloy and its composites increased with the increase of applied load due to ploughing effect and decreased with the increase of sliding speed owing to the formation of lubricating tribolayer. Further, the AZ91D – (WC + SiO2) composite exhibited the lower wear rate of 0.0017 mm3/m and minimum coefficient of friction of 0.33 at a load of 10 N and a sliding speed of 150 mm/s due to the inclusion of hybrid WC and SiO2 particles. Hence, the proposed AZ91D – (WC + SiO2) composite could be a suitable candidate to be used in the aviation applications.

Originality/value

This work is original which deals with the effect of hybrid particles, i.e. WC and SiO2 on the wear performance of the AZ91D magnesium alloy composites. The literature review showed that none of the studies focused on the reinforcement of AZ91D alloy by the combination of carbide and metal oxide particles as used in this investigation.

Abstract

Purpose

Engineers and scientists are searching for novel materials with high performance on all aspect points of view for the applications including marine, aero and automobile fields. AA8090 aluminum alloy is one of the materials used in aero industries for aircraft construction because of its weight reduction ability. However, the AA8090 alloy has a drawback such as low wear resistance that affects the life time of material; hence, it should be addressed. The purpose of this investigation is to improve the wear resistance of AA8090 alloy.

Design/methodology/approach

In this investigation, AA8090 aluminum alloy metal matrix composite was fabricated using different types of carbide nanoparticles such as vanadium carbide (VC), Cr3C2 and Mo2C by stir casting method and tribological and mechanical behaviors were studied.

Findings

Mechanical studies showed that the S1 sample displayed the maximum hardness of 142 HV and maximum tensile strength of 857 MPa because of the inclusion of hard VC particles. Tribological studies revealed that S1 sample showed high performance. A least wear rate of 0.003915 × 10–3 mm3/m was noted for S1 sample, which is 71% lower than the wear rate of S0 sample. Further, a least mass loss and lower coefficient of friction of 0.00152 g and 0.2, respectively, were observed for S1 sample because of its high hardness and high wear resistance because of the stuffing of high-hardness VC particles. Hence, it is concluded from this study that S1 sample, i.e. AA8090/VC, could be a better candidate for aerospace applications as it showed good tribological and mechanical properties.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this work is original and novel in the field of metal matrix composite which deals with the effect of hybridization on the wear performance of the aluminum alloy composites.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a hybrid, metaheuristic, multimodal and multi-objective optimization tool that is needed for aerospace propulsion engineering problems.

Design/methodology/approach

Multi-objective hybrid optimization code is integrated with various benchmark and test functions that are selected suitable to the difficulty level of the aero propulsion performance problems.

Findings

Ant colony and particle swarm optimization (ACOPSO) has performed satisfactorily with benchmark problems.

Research limitations/implications

ACOPSO is able to solve multi-objective and multimodal problems. Because every optimization problem has specific features, it is necessary to search their general behavior using other algorithms.

Practical implications

In addition to the optimization solving, ACOPSO enables an alternative methodology for turbine engine performance calculations by using generic components maps. The user is flexible for searching various effects of component designs along with the compressor and turbine maps.

Originality/value

A hybrid optimization code that has not been used before is introduced. It is targeted use is propulsion systems optimization and design such as Turboshaft or turbofan by preparing the necessary engine functions. A number of input parameters and objective functions can be modified accordingly.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to synthesise polyurethane/polyacrylate (PU/AC) core‐shell hybrid latex by emulsion polymerisation (PUA) and interpenetrating hybrid latex by soap‐free emulsion polymerisation techniques latex interpenetrating polymer networks (LIPN) and to compare their physico‐chemical and thermo‐mechanical properties.

Design/methodology/approach

The interactions between the PU and AC components in hybrid coatings were studied with infrared spectroscopy. Mechanical properties were determined by measuring Shore A hardness, pencil hardness and flexibility of dried films. A particle size analyser and scanning electron microscopy were used to investigate the morphology of hybrid resins. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were performed to investigate the thermal stability of polymeric films.

Findings

The core‐shell hybrids had better physico‐chemical and thermo‐mechanical properties than LIPN hybrids, attributing better interpenetration and entanglement between PU/AC in emulsion polymerisation.

Research limitations/implications

The syntheses of hybrid polymers can be extended for various combinations of acrylate monomers with crosslinkers, as well as for different types of PU ionomers.

Practical implications

The comparative study provides a simple and practical solution to improve performance characteristics of PU/AC hybrid coatings, which also proves to be cost effective.

Originality/value

The findings are of interest to those in surface coatings and adhesive applications.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effect of titanium oxide (TiO2) and yttrium oxide (Y2O3) nanoparticles-reinforced pure aluminium (Al) on the mechanical properties of hybrid aluminium matrix nanocomposites (HAMNCs).

Design/methodology/approach

The HAMNCs were fabricated via a vacuum die-assisted stir casting route by a two-step feeding method. The varying weight percentages of TiO2 and Y2O3 nanoparticles were added as 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 Wt.%.

Findings

Scanning electron microscope images showed the homogenous dispersion of nanoparticles in Al matrix. The tensile strength by 28.97%, yield strength by 50.60%, compression strength by 104.6% and micro-hardness by 50.90% were improved in HAMNC1 when compared to the base matrix. The highest values impact strength of 36.3 J was observed for HAMNC1. The elongation % was decreased by increasing the weight percentage of the nanoparticles. HAMNC1 improved the wear resistance by 23.68%, while increasing the coefficient of friction by 14.18%. Field emission scanning electron microscope analysis of the fractured surfaces of tensile samples revealed microcracks and the debonding of nanoparticles.

Originality/value

The combined effect of TiO2 and Y2O3 nanoparticles with pure Al on mechanical properties has been studied. The composites were fabricated with two-step feeding vacuum-assisted stir casting.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to realize a multi‐objective location‐routing network optimization in reverse logistics using particle swarm optimization based on grey relational analysis with entropy weight.

Design/methodology/approach

Real world network design problems are often characterized by multi‐objective in reverse logistics. This has recently been considered as an additional objective for facility location problem or vehicle routing problem in reverse logistics network design. Both of them are shown to be NP‐hard. Hence, location‐routing problem (LRP) with multi‐objective is more complicated integrated problem, and it is NP‐hard too. Due to the fact that NP‐hard model cannot be solved directly, grey relational analysis and entropy weight were added to particle swarm optimization to decision among the objectives. Then, a mathematics model about multi‐objective LRP of reverse logistics has been constructed, and a proposed hybrid particle swarm optimization with grey relational analysis and entropy weight has been developed to resolve it. An example is also computed in the last part of the paper.

Findings

The results are convincing: not only that particle swarm optimization and grey relational analysis can be used to resolve multi‐objective location‐routing model, but also that entropy and grey relational analysis can be combined to decide weights of objectives.

Practical implications

The method exposed in the paper can be used to deal with multi‐objective LRP in reverse logistics, and multi‐objective network optimization result could be helpful for logistics efficiency and practicability.

Originality/value

The paper succeeds in realising both a constructed multi‐objective model about location‐routing of reverse logistics and a multi‐objective solution algorithm about particle swarm optimization and future stage by using one of the newest developed theories: grey relational analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the effects of inorganic CaCO3 nanoadditives in the polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and fused filament fabrication (FFF) process parameters on the mechanical characteristics of 3D-printed components.

Design/methodology/approach

The PLA filaments containing different levels of CaCO3 nanoparticles have been produced by mix-blending/extrusion process and were used to fabricate tensile and three-point bending test samples in FFF process under various sets of printing speed (PS), layer thickness (LT), filling ratio (FR) and printing pattern (PP) under a Taguchi L27 orthogonal array design. The quantified values of mechanical characteristics of 3D-printed samples in the uniaxial and the three-point bending experiments were modeled and optimized using a hybrid neural network/particle swarm optimization algorithm. The results of this hybrid scheme were used to specify the FFF process parameters and the concentration of nanoadditive in the matrix that result in the maximum mechanical properties of fabricated samples, individually and also in an accumulative response scheme. Diffraction scanning calorimetry (DSC) tests were conducted on a number of samples and the results were used to interpret the variations observed in the response variables of fabricated components against the FFF parameters and concentration of CaCO3 nanoadditives.

Findings

The results of optimization in an accumulative scheme showed that the samples of linear PP, fabricated at high PS, low LT and at 100% FR, while containing 0.64% of CaCO3 nanoadditives in the matrix, would possess the highest mechanical characteristics of 3D-printed PLA components.

Originality/value

FFF is a widely accepted additive manufacturing technique in production of different samples, from prototypes to the final products, in various sectors of industry. The incorporation of chopped fibers and nanoparticles has been introduced recently in a few articles to improve the mechanical characteristics of produced components in FFF technique. However, the effectiveness of such practice is strongly dependent on the extrusion parameters and composition of polymer matrix.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate analytically the steady general three-dimensional stagnation-point flow of an aqueous titania-copper hybrid nanofluid past a circular cylinder that has a sinusoidal radius variation.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the analytic modeling of hybrid nanofluid is presented, and using appropriate similarity variables, the governing equations are transformed into nonlinear ordinary differential equations in the dimensionless stream function, which is solved by the well-known function bvp4c from MATLAB.

Findings

The current solution demonstrates good agreement with those of the previously published studies in the special cases of regular fluid and nanofluids. Graphical results are presented to investigate the influences of the titania and copper nanoparticle volume fractions and also the nodal/saddle indicative parameter on flow and heat transfer characteristics. Here, the thermal characteristics of hybrid nanofluid are found to be higher in comparison to the base fluid and fluid containing single nanoparticles. An important point to note is that the developed model can be used with great confidence to study the flow and heat transfer of hybrid nanofluids.

Originality/value

Analytic modeling of hybrid nanofluid is the important originality of present study. Hybrid nanofluids are potential fluids that offer better heat transfer performance and thermophysical properties than convectional heat transfer fluids (oil, water and ethylene glycol) and nanofluids with single nanoparticles. In this investigation, titania (TiO2, 50 nm), copper (Cu, 20 nm) and the hybrid of these two are separately dispersed into the water as the base fluid and analyzed.
