Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide an assessment of the existing literature on the role of social media advertising in hospitality, tourism and travel (HTT) as well as an agenda for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

Covering a 15-year time span (2004–2019), this study is focused on journal papers archived in two academic databases in social sciences: Business Source Complete and Communication and Mass Media Complete. Each of the 192 papers collected was coded for 8 major variables: journal, year of publication, research topic, country studied, type of social media investigated, method, theoretical underpinning and key findings.

Findings

Three major topic areas are identified in this study: use of social media from consumer’s perspective, use of social media from organization’s perspective and effects of social media.

Research limitations/implications

Although a few prior papers have provided a literature review of social media in tourism and hospitality, no review-based papers have ever examined social media as an advertising vehicle in the context of HTT. Most reviews to date have been limited to general social media studies, without much advancement of theory building in advertising research.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper represents the first theoretical review of academic research on social media advertising in HTT. The review concludes by suggesting a theoretical framework for studying social media advertising in HTT and offering an agenda for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the energy ratios of plane waves on an interface of nonlocal thermoelastic halfspace (NTS) and nonlocal orthotropic piezothermoelastic half-space (NOPS).

Design/methodology/approach

The memory-dependent derivatives (MDDs) approach with a hyperbolic two-temperature (HTT), three-phase lag theory is used here to study how the energy ratios change at the interface with the angle of incidence.

Findings

Plane waves that travel through NTS and hit the interface as a longitudinal wave, a thermal wave, or a transversal wave send four waves into the NOPS medium and three waves back into the NTS medium. The amplitude ratios of the different waves that are reflected and transmitted are used to calculate the energy ratios of the waves. It is observed that these ratios are affected by the HTT, nonlocal and MDD parameters.

Research limitations/implications

The energy ratios correspond to four distinct models; nonlocal HTT with memory, nonlocal HTT without memory, local HTT with memory and nonlocal classical-two-temperature with memory concerning the angle of incidence from 0 degree to 90 degree.

Practical implications

This model applies to several fields, including earthquake engineering, soil dynamics, high-energy particle physics, nuclear fusion, aeronautics and other fields where nonlocality, MDD and conductive temperature play an important role.

Originality/value

The authors produced the submitted document entirely on their initiative, with equal contributions from all of them.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a systematic review of the existing literature on the applications of deep learning (DL) in hospitality, tourism and travel as well as an agenda for future research.

Design/methodology/approach

Covering a five-year time span (2017–2021), this study systematically reviews journal articles archived in four academic databases: Emerald Insight, Springer, Wiley Online Library and ScienceDirect. All 159 articles reviewed were characterised using six attributes: publisher, year of publication, country studied, type of value created, application area and future suggestions (and/or limitations).

Findings

Five application areas and six challenge areas are identified, which characterise the application of DL in hospitality, tourism and travel. In addition, it is observed that DL is mainly used to develop novel models that are creating business value by forecasting (or projecting) some parameter(s) and promoting better offerings to tourists.

Research limitations/implications

Although a few prior papers have provided a literature review of artificial intelligence in tourism and hospitality, none have drilled-down to the specific area of DL applications within the context of hospitality, tourism and travel.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper represents the first theoretical review of academic research on DL applications in hospitality, tourism and travel. An integrated framework is proposed to expose future research trajectories wherein scholars can contribute significant value. The exploration of the DL literature has significant implications for industry and practice, given that this, as far as the authors know, is the first systematic review of existing literature in this research area.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of an admixture, Swine-waste Bio-char (SB), on the water absorption characteristics of cement pastes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of an admixture, Swine-waste Bio-char (SB), on the water absorption characteristics of cement pastes.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of SB percentages, heat treatment temperatures, water/binder ratios, and age on the water absorption percentages (WAPs) of SB modified cement pastes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectra, FTIR, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, and laboratory experiments.

Findings

The WAPs of cement pastes with SBs produced at the low treatment temperature (LTT) of 340°C and 400°C were significantly lower (p<0.01) than pastes with SBs produced at the high treatment temperature (HTT) of 600°C and 800°C. This was attributed primarily to the more dominant presence of hydrophobic alkyl surface groups from non-volatilized matter in LTT-SBs. This had also resulted in lower surface areas and pore volumes in LTT-SBs. As a result of the volatilization of these labile hydrophobic groups at HTT, HTT-SBs were more hydrophilic and had higher surface areas and pore volumes. Consequently, HTT-SB pastes had higher WAPs and no significant differences (p<0.05) existed between HTT-SB pastes and control pastes. Also, low water/binder ratios and aging reduced water absorption of SB modified cement pastes.

Practical implications

LTT-SBs reduce water absorption and could reduce concrete deterioration; and as such, associated building repair, maintenance, and adaptation costs. Notably, reductions in concrete water absorption will extend the service life of concrete buildings and infrastructures, particularly in unfavorable environmental conditions. The observed benefits are tempered by the current lack of information on the effects of SB on compression strength, workability, and other durability properties.

Social implications

SB utilization in concrete buildings will enhance swine-waste disposal and reduce negative environmental impacts on swine farming communities; consequently, improving their quality of life.

Originality/value

Current bio-char research is focused on plant-derived bio-char toward soil remediation and contaminant removal, with very limited applications in concrete. This research advances knowledge for developing livestock-derived bio-char, as a PCRM, toward more sustainable and durable concrete structures.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on analysing the wear characteristics of tungsten carbide tools on which various micro patterns are fabricated to study its effect on the machinability of Ti-6Al-4V at dry turning conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Micro-patterns such as dimples, linear grooves and a novel combination of dimples and linear grooves were fabricated on rake faces of uncoated tools by micro-EDM process. Impact of these patterns on tool wear and chip morphology characteristics under dry machining conditions were analysed, and their performances were compared with the non-textured tool (NTT).

Findings

Encouraging results in terms of minimal tool wear and favourable chip morphology characteristics were observed in case of all the textured tools, which demonstrated better tribological characteristics in contrast to NTT. The average flank wear was reduced by 43.5, 32 and 24.7% in dimple textured tool (DTT), linear textured tool (LTT) and hybrid textured tool (HTT), respectively, as compared to NTT. The average chip curl diameters measured for NTT, DTT, LTT, and HTT were observed to be 6.60, 3.51, 4.0 and 4.31 mm, respectively.

Originality/value

The contribution of this work lies in fabricating innovative patterns using cost-effective micro-EDM process and analysing how the patterns, depending upon their dimensional area and wear debris accumulation characteristics, influence the machinability of Ti-6Al-4V in the absence of any lubrication mediums.
