Abstract

MAGNESIUM AND ALUMINIUM Effect of RH of air on hydrogen peroxide formation in atmospheric corrosion. Means are described for maintaining a constant relative humidity of the air by providing at the bottom of the containers in which the tests are made NaOH solutions of definite concentration, in connection with which graphs were constructed showing relation between r.h. and NaOH concentrations, e.g. with r.h. of 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90%. The photographic method was used for determining the relation between amount of metal removed or separating in atmospheric corrosion through hydrogen peroxide and r.h. Spectroscopically pure Al was used for test (Si 0.0016, Fe 0.0016, Cu 0.001%); also Mg (Fe 0.004, Si 0.009, Mn 0.0021%), in an atmosphere to which no aggressive media were added. Iso‐orthochromatic reproducing supercontrasting photographic plate was used of 1.4 sensitivity (Russian standard, G.O.S.T.). It had been found in earlier Russian work (I. L. Roikh, etc., Dokl. A.N., 1953–54) that the photographic response of metals is associated with the separation of H2O2 in atmospheric corrosion. Subsequent research revealed an actual linear relation between weight and thickness of the oxide film and separating H2O2 in the atmospheric corrosion of Al and Mg. With variation in r.h. from 0 to 90% there was linear relation between this content and separation of H2O2 in the atmosphere. The kinetics of separation of H2O2 by Mg and Al was studied during the first 6 hr. of atmospheric oxidation with r.h. of 0 to 60%. Fifteen references.—(I. L. Roikh and D. M. Rafalovich, Zh. prikl. Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of three different treatments, namely (i) sunlight exposures, (ii) bleaching and (iii) perming on the damage of the keratin fibres (with the use of human hair). Scanning electron microscopy was applied to examine the surface morphology of the samples. Hair samples appeared to be rougher and their scales diminished after the treatments. The degree of colour change of samples was measured using a diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer. All three different treatments caused a certain degree of colour change on the samples. Urea bisulphite solubility test was also employed to investigate the alkaline damage of samples.

The results illustrated that the urea bisulphite solubility of samples conformably decreased when they were subject to these three types of treatments. With respect to the tensile strength property, the results indicate that the breaking load of treated samples decreased dramatically after undergoing three different types of treatments. On evaluating the test results, it was concluded that the bleaching process imparted the most severe damages to hair. The results of the different test methods were evaluated and discussed.

Abstract

The spent electroless copper bath is deactivated at the overflow by the automatic addition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to prevent copper from plating out in the drain lines, causing the lines to become blocked. Caustic (NaOH) and formaldehyde (HCHO) are then added to the deactivated electroless copper solution in a batch treatment process. Powdered aluminium or aluminium fines are added to precipitate out the copper as metallic copper. The copper concentration (<1 ppm) can be made stable for several days if necessary. The metallic copper is filtered out and salvaged. The mother liquor is neutralised (pH 6·5–9·0) and discharged. United States patent applied for, 07–345865.

Abstract

Purpose

Blueberry contains bioactive compounds which are beneficial to organisms, such as phenolics and flavonoids. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the potential protective effects of blueberry extracts (BE) on H2O2-induced HepG2 cells.

Design/methodology/approach

Cell protection was evaluated via the survivals of the cell. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, antioxidant enzyme and malondialdehyde (MDA) were detected. Western blot was carried out to analysis protein which was related to the cell apoptosis pathway. Changes in morphology including: cell total apoptosis/necrosis and G0/G1 cycle arresting were also concomitant.

Findings

The levels of ROS and malondialdehyde (MDA) reduced after the BE treatment while the contents of superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) increased in HepG2 cells induced by H2O2. Furthermore, mechanistic studies indicated that BE regulated the activation of mitochondrial apoptosis signal-regulating (Bcl-2, Bax). Qu was used as a positive control group. All these results demonstrated that the BE have a potential against oxidative stress in vitro.

Originality/value

Few studies have focused on the bioactivities of blueberry on oxidative stress. Taken together, the results confirm that polyphenol-enriched BE have the ability to protect against oxidative stress in cells. It has a great potential as a functional food ingredient to health benefits. Furthermore, this work showed the value of using simple biological models to screen for compounds that are of interest for food and pharmacological industry.
