Rodney Cooper, Furniture Partner of London's Building Design Partnership, carried out for the Designers' Journal a survey of partitioning suppliers and manufacturers. The results — and the attitudes of those people approached for information — tended to confirm the view that many users must have formed: that the industry has still not come to terms with the demands of a more sophisticated market. Often the product exists that will do the Job, but the detailed information is hard to find.

This study aims to put forward a theory for the design of the crown sections in hedgerow orchards.

The fruit trees located at the north latitudes 0°-60° were selected for analysis. In detail, the study period focused on the fruit trees’ growing season, that is from the vernal equinox to the autumnal equinox. Certain fixed hedge-shaped angle with sufficient sunlight throughout the seasons was calculated under the condition of the lines from north to south. Meanwhile, the crown cross section perpendicular to the lines was analyzed in rectangular, trapezoidal and triangular forms.

Results showed that the adaptive geographic latitudes to different crown sections should be determined by the ratio analysis between various crown heights and spans.

The optimum parameters of the crown sections in different latitude areas can be determined by the theory proposed in this study.

We propose a simple model consisting of two separated markets: the market for good y and the market for good x. Purchasing information about consumer behavior in the former market helps the monopolist firm, in the latter market, to price-discriminate. Consumers differ in their income and in their level of myopia. Personal data market regulation could both increase consumers' awareness about the treatment of their data and allow them to have their data erased from the data holder. We find that the former aspect of the policy reduces the number of transactions, and hence tends to reduce total surplus, while the second typically boosts willingness to pay of consumers and has positive effects on surplus, provided that the share of high-income consumers is not too high. The overall effect of regulation on total welfare depends on the share of high-income and myopic consumers.

Importance sampling is a popular Monte Carlo method used in a variety of areas in econometrics. When the variance of the importance sampling estimator is infinite, the central limit theorem does not apply and estimates tend to be erratic even when the simulation size is large. The authors consider asymptotic trimming in such a setting. Specifically, the authors propose a bias-corrected tail-trimmed estimator such that it is consistent and has finite variance. The authors show that the proposed estimator is asymptotically normal, and has good finite-sample properties in a Monte Carlo study.

We show that, even with flexible domestic wages, international outsourcing may worsen the welfare of the home country and reduce the profits of all firms. If wages are rigid, outsourcing is welfare-improving if and only if the sum of the “trade creation” effect and the “exploitation effect” exceeds the “trade diversion” effect. A wage subsidy may improve welfare. We also extend the model to a two-period framework. Delaying outsourcing can be gainful because the fixed cost of outsourcing may fall over time. A social planner would choose a different speed of outsourcing than that achieved under laissez-faire.

We develop and estimate an empirical collective model with endogenous marriage formation, participation, and family labor supply. Intra-household transfers arise endogenously as the transfers that clear the marriage market. The intra-household allocation can be recovered from observations on marriage decisions. Introducing the marriage market in the collective model allows us to independently estimate transfers from labor supplies and from marriage decisions. We estimate a semiparametric version of our model using 1980, 1990, and 2000 US Census data. Estimates of the model using marriage data are much more consistent with the theoretical predictions than estimates derived from labor supply.
