Abstract

Social media are central to the creation and maintenance of social relations, including romantic relations. While much of the scholarship has examined how social media play a role in the initiation and maintenance of romantic relations, little is known about their role in romantic dissolution. This chapter fills this gap by examining the kinds of strategies young adults employ to cope with the aftermath of a romantic breakup complicated by Facebook. Based on qualitative analysis of 10 interviews with young adults, the authors propose a typology of Facebook coping strategies for romantic breakups. The typology includes seven types of coping strategies with 12 subtopics and 25 specific actions linked to the subtopics. The authors find that those coping with a breakup engage in erasing and avoiding breakup reminders and digital traces, as they perceive them as hurtful. They regulate their use of Facebook and limit Facebook communication with the ex. An important coping strategy used was to express their emotions via Facebook content, often aimed at the ex-partner. They also use Facebook to seek support and new information about the ex, including about potential new romantic interests. Others preferred to avoid information about the ex and either deleted the ex and their friends or chose to unsubscribe to updates. Coping strategies included preventative measures such as changing passwords, blocking the ex, and adjusting privacy settings. We found our participants engaged in both goal-directed and emotionally based coping strategies. Yet, the findings suggest a tendency to rely more extensively on goal-directed coping strategies by actively addressing the breakup stressor. We also note that coping strategies specific to Facebook are more likely to be used than traditional offline forms of coping. This exploratory study serves as a starting point to better understand the role that Facebook plays in mediating online behaviors following a romantic dissolution, such that these strategies can be subsequently evaluated in terms of usefulness in clinical coping recommendations.

Abstract

Need of the Study: In an ever-changing environment, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate the business is inevitable. By introducing various advanced technologies to improve productivity, technology users are well aware of the challenges ahead.

Purpose: This chapter aims to understand AI technology and the challenges it faces in noted domains.

Methodology: This chapter is based on secondary research, and relevant information has been gathered from various secondary sources such as research articles, newspaper articles, books, and websites. There is a considerable gap between the expected outcomes of AI and the reality of AI in human resource (HR) practice.

Findings: The study’s outcome focuses on AI challenges in human resource management (HRM) functions such as recruitment and selection, learning and development, and performance appraisal. Considering the numerous benefits, it becomes essential to understand these issues/challenges so that they can be adequately addressed.

Practical Implications: This study highlights the issues such as complexity of HR practices, organisation readiness, staff acceptability, and responsibility for AI implementation in HRM, and other related issues and proposes prudent response to these challenges that will be embraced by both employees and employers, thereby adding novelty to this research.

Abstract

THE development of the Heinkel He 111 from the first conception of the designer to the delivery of the finished machine to the suftwaffe is the subject of a recent book by a well‐known German technical writer. The following survey is an extract from the last chapter of the book describing the mass production of this familiar type.

Abstract

THE organization of the German aircraft industry has been set up around 5 main companies: Junkers, Heinkel, Dornier, Messerschmitt (the former Bayerische Flugzeugwerke), and Focke‐Wulf. All the other companies, with the exception of the Government‐owned Arado works, have been founded as “shadow” factories for those five—that some of them have taken up the development of their own types does not alter the fact that that is their main task.

Abstract

THIS article is the first of a short series which is intended to summarize and, to some extent, correlate the methods used in the production of several well‐known types of modern aeroplanes. Particular attention will be paid to the methods of the Germans, not in order to publicize them (which they are more than able to do for themselves), but in order that all that is of merit may be gleaned from their work.

Abstract

Miss Barbara R. F. Kyle has been appointed Research Librarian of Aslib and, in succession to Miss E. M. R. Ditmas, Managing Editor of the Journal of Documentation. She will join the Aslib staff on 24th June. Barbara Kyle is at present Assistant Director of the National Book League, which appointment she has held since 1958. After wide experience in public libraries she was, for ten years, Librarian of the Royal Institute of International Affairs. Since 1955, thanks to grants from both the Nuffield Foundation and the United States National Science Foundation, she has drafted and is testing a classification for social sciences. She is a member of the Unesco International Advisory Committee for Bibliography, Documentation, and Terminology, and a Vice‐President of the International Federation for Documentation. For many years she has taken an active interest in Aslib affairs. She was elected to the Council in 1949 and has since given her services as Chairman of the Conference and Meetings Committee (1950–51), Honorary Secretary (1951–55), Chairman of Council (1955–57), Chairman of the International Relations Committee (1957–61), Chairman of the Research Committee (1961–62), and has served also on the Education and the Executive and Finance Committees.

Abstract

Gives a critical examination of “Markets” within the marketing environment, and suggests that the system of marketing can be described by two fundamental dimensions: activity and product. Presents a normative view of the relationships that exist between a marketing system and its environment. Proposes that the system is more effective in same conditions than in others. Indicates that the dynamics of marketing strategy and competitive advantage should be considered.

Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the ascent of Metropolitan Washington from an area with low levels of immigration to a major U.S. destination.

Methodology/approach – Drawing on a growing body of research on immigration to Washington, DC, and data from the American Community Survey (ACS), trends are examined in detail to illustrate how this immigrant gateway fits into the national historical picture.

Findings – The findings analyze the historical comparative settlement patterns of immigrants to the United States to demonstrate how Washington has emerged as the seventh largest immigrant gateway. The paper further analyzes metropolitan-level data on country of origin and residence to show the diversity of the immigrant population and their disbursal to suburban areas from the central core over the past four decades.

Social implications – The paper also highlights some conflict in new suburban destinations within metropolitan Washington, which experienced fast and recent growth. But immigrant incorporation has worked well in the past and Washington can continue to work to be a model of immigrant integration as local organizations, governments, and communities continue to confront the challenges of immigration in productive and sustainable ways.

Originality/value of paper – This paper combines the historical settlement of immigrants across the United States with the in-depth examination of one of the newest and largest immigrant gateways, the U.S. capitol region, Washington, DC.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to survey the automobile insurance fraud detection literature in the past 31 years (1990–2021) and present a research agenda that addresses the challenges and opportunities artificial intelligence and machine learning bring to car insurance fraud detection.

Design/methodology/approach

Content analysis methodology is used to analyze 46 peer-reviewed academic papers from 31 journals plus eight conference proceedings to identify their research themes and detect trends and changes in the automobile insurance fraud detection literature according to content characteristics.

Findings

This study found that automobile insurance fraud detection is going through a transformation, where traditional statistics-based detection methods are replaced by data mining- and artificial intelligence-based approaches. In this study, it was also noticed that cost-sensitive and hybrid approaches are the up-and-coming avenues for further research.

Practical implications

This paper’s findings not only highlight the rise and benefits of data mining- and artificial intelligence-based automobile insurance fraud detection but also highlight the deficiencies observable in this field such as the lack of cost-sensitive approaches or the absence of reliable data sets.

Originality/value

This paper offers greater insight into how artificial intelligence and data mining challenges traditional automobile insurance fraud detection models and addresses the need to develop new cost-sensitive fraud detection methods that identify new real-world data sets.
