Abstract

As yet, the services and guides offered commercially do not address the problem of database selection fully. There is a need for a database selector that can either take database selection out of the hands of the inexperienced or act as an advisor to more experienced online users. One approach to assisting business database selection is to produce better software, but of what type? Examination of the problem suggests that an expert system, which embodies and applies problem‐solving skills, might be suitable, since the task of database selection requires specific cognitive skills; intermediaries with skills in selecting databases exist; and intermediaries can articulate the methods they use to select databases.

Abstract

CD‐ROM is an increasingly successful consumer product. The market is at present going through an experimental period with new openings being sought for specialised products, particularly in the business and financial sectors. The development of CD‐ROM products will undoubtedly be market led, becoming integrated into an end user's working environment rather than being set aside as a separate resource. Consideration of how to train end users to perform successful searches on CD‐ROM databases will become increasingly important as the market for such products grows.

Abstract

The past. Exactly 10 years ago to the day (as this is being written), the author began teaching in information and library studies. At that time, the main computing resource was a small minicomputer hidden in a separate room to which several dumb terminals in a teaching laboratory were attached. A mile away at the other end of campus there was another teaching laboratory of teletype terminals — terminals which used paper rolls rather than display screens, with the result that the used paper cascaded onto the floor at the back of the machine. This had the two disadvantages (among others) of destroying forests and of not allowing students to hide their errors from the eyes of their tutors.

Abstract

This communication emerges from a survey carried out as part of the author's Master's dissertation. Library automation in Nigeria has been a subject of attention since the mid‐1970s because of the spreading knowledge of the new technologies, and the efforts of Nigerian library workers, particularly those with study experience in, and contact with, the industrialised world. Evidence was found, while conducting the survey, that Nigerian library workers are enthusiastic about, and willing to use, the new technologies while remaining fully cognisant of the constraints faced.

Abstract

A ‘World Wide Web search engine’ is defined as a retrieval service, consisting of a database (or databases) describing mainly resources available on the World Wide Web (WWW), search software and a user interface also available via WWW. After intro ducing early Internet search engines, which are pertinent as precursors for the current range of WWW search engines, the problems of searching the WWW (link persistence, lack of integrated search software) and the resulting search engine types (keyword or directory) are analysed. Search engines of all types are then compared across their generic features (database content, retrieval software, and search interface), rather than on a search engine by search engine basis. Finally, wider information access issues aris ing from the nature of the Internet and web search engines are considered, and a general strategy for using web search engines is proposed.

Abstract

Two speakers at Online 95 spoke on the contentious subjects of censorship and other ethical matters on the Internet. Charles Oppenheim, then of the University of Strathclyde, talked about three problem areas on the Internet that are difficult to police — pornography; copyright and moral rights infringement; and libel and slander. He also cited some examples of each. Michael Dahan of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and of the Israel Democracy Institute, then talked about the censorship imposed on the Internet by the secret service in Israel — a country that is understandably more security conscious than many in the West.

Abstract

Information technology (IT) has been hailed as a great time and paper saver. How far is this true? Are you benefiting as much as you could from the computer on your desk or are you wasting time learning how to use complex software when it would be more cost‐effective to buy in expertise? This paper looks at what, for some, may be novel ways of using a PC and indicates areas where computer use may not be beneficial. The article is geared towards special libraries, but may have wider applications.
