Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of various heat conditions on the durability of eggshell powder (ESP)–flyash (FA) geopolymer subjected to wetting–drying cycles.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, two waste materials, ESP and FA, which are destined for landfills, were used as precursors to produce geopolymers in a sustainable manner. The mixture of Na2SiO3 and NaOH was used as a liquid alkaline activator in geopolymerization. The ESP and FA content were varied as 30, 50 and 70% and Na2SiO3/NaOH ratios were varied as 0.5, 1 and 2. Geopolymer samples were cured at three heat conditions: 25°C (ambient temperature), 50°C and 80°C for seven days prior to durability tests.

Findings

The results of this study revealed that the strength loss of the geopolymer decreases with an increase in curing temperature up to 50°C and then increases for higher temperature up to 80°C. Further, the strength loss of the geopolymer decreases with an increase in FA replacement and Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio. Geopolymer composites exhibited early strength development because of the inclusion of calcium-rich ESP. The weight loss of the ESP–FA geopolymer follows a similar pattern of strength loss. Geopolymer samples previously cured at optimum heat condition of 50°C for seven days exhibited higher durability.

Originality/value

The inclusion of calcium-rich ESP in FA-based geopolymer is novel research. As ESP–FA geopolymer composites show higher mechanical strength and higher durability compared to Indian standards, the potential use of this geopolymer can be in road subbases/subgrades.

Abstract

Purpose

South Asia is one of the fastest-growing regions in the world. With its fast economic development, the energy requirement for the region has rapidly grown. As the region relies mainly on nonrenewable energy sources and is suffering from issues like pollution, the high cost of energy imports, depleting foreign reserves, etc. it is searching for those factors that can help enhance the renewable energy generation for the region. Thus, taking these issues into consideration, this paper aims to investigate the impact of macroeconomic factors that can contribute to the enhancement of renewable energy output in South Asia.

Design/methodology/approach

An autoregressive distributed lag methodology has been applied to examine the long-term effects of remittance inflows, literacy rate, energy imports, government expenditures and urban population growth on the renewable energy output of South Asia by using time series data from 1990 to 2021.

Findings

The findings indicated that remittance inflows have a negative and insignificant long-term effect on renewable electricity output. While it was discovered that energy imports, government spending and urban population growth have negative but significant effects on renewable electricity output, literacy rates have positive and significant effects.

Originality/value

Considering the importance of renewable energy, this is one of the few studies that has included critical macroeconomic variables that can affect renewable energy output for the region. The findings contribute to the body of knowledge that a high literacy level is crucial for promoting renewable energy output, while governments and policymakers should prioritize reducing energy imports and ensuring that government expenditures on renewable energy output are properly used. SAARC, the governing body of the region, also benefits from this study while devising the renewable energy output policies for the region.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a holistic approach for measuring overall bank efficiency and its decomposition in intermediation and operating efficiencies.

Design/methodology/approach

Recently developed two-stage network data envelopment analysis model by Liang et al. (2008) has been used for obtaining intermediation and operational efficiencies along with overall bank efficiency. The bootstrapped truncated regression algorithm as proposed by Simar and Wilson (2007) has been employed to explore the influential determinants of intermediation and operating efficiencies.

Findings

The empirical results reveal that the operating inefficiency is the dominant source of overall bank inefficiency in Indian banking sector. Another interesting finding is that public sector banks are more efficient than private banks in the intermediation stage of production process, while private banks are more efficient in the operating stage of production process. Finally, the results of bootstrapped truncated regression show that variations in intermediation efficiency are explained by bank size, liquidity position, directed lending and intermediation cost, while inter-bank differences in operating efficiency are influenced by profitability and income diversification.

Practical implications

The most significant practical implication that has been derived from the research findings is that at the industry level, overall efficiency enhancement needs improvement both in terms of resource-utilization and income-generating abilities of the banks. However, the relatively easy way to achieve higher bank efficiency is to improve the efficiency of banks in generating incomes from interest and fee-based sources.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to provide a comprehensive assessment of performance of Indian banks by examining the efficiency of individual banks considering both the intermediation and operating approaches simultaneously.
