Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Townsley, as works director, will devote all his attention to increasing production activities, which include the contribution made to de Havilland manufacture as a whole. The positions of Mr A. E. Hagg, as technical director, Mr P. E. GordonMarshall, as sales director, and Messrs F. T. Hearle and F. E. N. St Barbe, as de Havilland directors on the Airspeed board, remain unchanged.

Abstract

Ethnography is a qualitative, naturalistic research method derived from the anthropological tradition. Ethnography uses participant observation supplemented by other research methods to gain holistic understandings of cultural groups’ beliefs and behaviors. Ethnography contributes to bioethics by: (1) locating bioethical dilemmas in their social, political, economic, and ideological contexts; (2) explicating the beliefs and behaviors of involved individuals; (3) making tacit knowledge explicit; (4) highlighting differences between ideal norms and actual behaviors; (5) identifying previously unrecognized phenomena; and (6) generating new questions for research. More comparative and longitudinal ethnographic research can contribute to better understanding of and responses to bioethical dilemmas.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a history of relational perspectives in marketing practice from the nineteenth through to the twentieth century.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper engages in a systematic reading of published histories of retailing practice using the key attributes of transaction and relationship marketing as a conceptual framework to interrogate whether earlier practitioners were committed to either approach.

Findings

This paper supplements the studies conducted in other domains that undermine the idea that relational practices were rejected in favor of transaction-type approaches during the industrialization of the USA and Canada.

Practical implications

The content of this paper provides textbook authors with a means to fundamentally revise the way they discuss relationship marketing. It has a similar pedagogic utility.

Originality/value

This paper studies the writings of practitioners known to be pioneers of retailing to unravel their business philosophies, comparing and contrasting these to known attributes of relationship marketing. It deals with an historical period that has not previously been studied in this level of detail by marketing historians.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate consumer channel preferences and the motives that induce consumers to use a particular channel in a context of multichannel contact.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper analyses some factors that influence consumer behaviour in channel selection through an empirical study in the financial sector. Some hypotheses are presented and tested.

Findings

The paper reveals the influence of some variables (perceived convenience, social relationships, knowledge of channel and privacy) on the channel selected (counter, ATM or internet) for the performance of certain operations with the company.

Research limitations/implications

To generalise these findings this study needs to be replicated in other geographical areas and companies.

Practical implications

The multichannel contact centre is one of the fundamental pillars of customer relationship management. It is not enough simply to have the necessary technology (hardware, software and telecommunications). Companies must investigate consumer channel preferences and the motives that induce consumers to use a particular channel.

Originality/value

This study is a reflection on the new environment of the relationship between companies and their clients due to the influence of new information and communication technologies. In this new context, knowledge of the consumer is as necessary as knowledge of the technology.

Sociologists of crime and deviance have devoted considerable time and effort, in recent years, to the study of deviants' accounts of their activities. There are good reasons why students of deviance in particular should be interested in what can be learned from their subjects' explanations of their social practices. Actors are normally called to account for or to explain their activities precisely when these actions are seen by significant others to be in some sense “unreasonable”. Moreover, accounts are central to the processes of law. The purpose of legal judgements is to attribute or withold responsibility. In order to assess an individual's guilt, where criminal activities are concerned, lawyers, judges, and juries pose such questions as: “Did the defendant perform an illegal act?”; “if so, can he or she explain his or her actions in reasonable terms?”; “Was the act in question pre‐meditated?” (that is, “motivated”); and, perhaps most important of all “What is the relationship between the accused's account of his or her involvement in an act, and their real involvement?”
