Abstract

MANY problems associated with aircraft investigations involve the accurate measurement of fluctuating fluid pressures. Various types of pickup exist from which choice may be made for this purpose. The suitability of a particular type for a specific application depends on the characteristics of the type and its associated electronic recorder. The fundamental requirements of fluctuating pressure pickups are discussed, and various types are described and typical examples of their application are given. Design data are derived based on experiments conducted on condenser type pickups, from which it is possible to design single diaphragm types for particular frequency and sensitivity requirements.

EVERYBODY travelling in air or water by its own power applies the reaction or “repulse” principle, that is to say, it either takes up parts of masses contained within itself or, by means of suitable organs, gathers up parts of the surrounding fluid medium and accelerates these masses at a speed greater than its own travelling speed, and this generally in the direction opposite to that in which it desires to travel; whilst in certain cases, in addition to the force produced by the repulse, a further force is obtained through the forward suction of the fluid medium. Devices intended to utilize only the negative pressure produced by suction, e.g. through lateral ejection by means of radial surfaces running at very high (five‐figure) r.p.m. have not, in spite of repeated endeavours, proved successful.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to investigate the heat and moisture transmission through different types of textile materials or material combinations used for male business clothing.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, eight different material combinations, which simulate four‐layer male business clothing system were tested using the sweating cylinder under two environmental conditions (10°C/65% RH and 25°C/65% RH), and at two sweating levels (100 and 200 gm−2h−1), in order to evaluate the heat and moisture transmission properties of material combinations.

Findings

The results show how combinations of clothing materials that simulate male business clothing system influence on the dry and evaporative heat loss between the cylinder surface and two different environment conditions as well as to different sweating levels.

Practical implications

The sweating cylinder can be used for measuring the heat and moisture transmission through clothing materials or material combinations in order to find out the best combination of textile materials, which simulate clothing system. Measured thermal comfort properties of material combinations evaluated with a sweating cylinder can provide valuable information for the textile and clothing industry by manufacturing/designing new textiles and clothing systems.

Originality/value

The paper investigated the heat and moisture transmission through combinations of clothing materials that simulate male business clothing system. In the past few years, clothing materials containing microencapsulated phase‐change materials (PCMs) have appeared in outdoor garments, particularly sportswear; therefore, we decided to investigate the combinations of standard used textile materials as well as of materials, containing PCMs, which simulate male business clothing system.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to investigate thermal comfort properties, such as heat and moisture transmission through male business clothing systems, by using a sweating thermal manikin Coppelius that simulates heat and moisture production in a similar way to the human body and measures the influence of clothing on heat exchange in different environmental and sweating conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

Ten different combination of male business clothing systems were measured using the sweating manikin, under three environmental conditions (10°C/50 per cent RH, 25°C/50 per cent RH and −5°C), and at 0 and 50 gm−2 h−1 sweating levels, in order to evaluate the influence of environmental and sweating conditions on thermal comfort properties of clothing systems.

Findings

The results show how business clothing systems influence on the dry and evaporative heat loss between the manikin surface and environment in different environmental and sweating conditions.

Practical implications

When using sweating thermal manikin Coppelius, water vapour transmission (WVT) through and water condensation on the clothing can be determined simultaneously with the thermal insulation (It) of clothing system. Measured thermal comfort properties of clothing systems evaluated with a sweating thermal manikin can provide valuable information for the clothing industry by manufacturing/designing new clothing systems.

Originality/value

In this investigation, the heat and moisture transmission properties of male business clothing systems were measured in different environmental and sweating conditions. In the past few years, clothing materials containing microencapsulated phase‐change materials (PCMs) have appeared in outdoor garments, particularly sportswear; therefore, we decided to investigate the thermal comfort properties of different standard male business apparel, as well as male business clothing that contain PCMs used as liner and outerwear material.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper seeks to discuss how medical librarians have used library standards, especially benchmark data, in advocating for the medical library and medical librarian to their communities, institutions, and other groups and the Medical Library Association's role in supporting these advocacy efforts.

Design/methodology/approach

Broad definitions of standards and benchmarking are cited from the literature and short case studies from medical librarianship are described on how both standards and benchmarking have been used to advocate for increased staff and budgets for medical libraries. Tips for using these tools are also included.

Findings

The case studies illustrate that more work should be done by all library associations in promoting the use of standards, including benchmarking, as an important tool for helping their members advocate for the value of libraries and librarians in helping institutions and organizations outside of the library achieve their missions and goals.

Research limitations/implications

The case studies included are anecdotal in nature and are not to be considered research.

Originality/value

The paper highlights how medical librarians should encourage the development and use of standards to not only measure and improve the quality of library programs and services internally, but also externally to promote the value of the library/librarian to the community, institution, or corporation, and thereby gain needed additional resources to serve target populations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to discuss best practices in corporate libraries. It is limited to libraries within the USA and excludes medical, hospital, pharmaceutical and government libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

Definitions of a corporate library and best practices are presented from the literature. The absence of generally accepted best practices within corporate libraries is noted and an explanation for its absence is presented.

Findings

The literature review indicates that there is an absence of generally accepted best practices within the corporate library community. This lack of quantitative data further weakens the position of corporate libraries within their organization as they cannot compare their operations to other service units. Corporate library managers must use the language and analysis tools of upper management to align the corporate library with the larger mission of the corporation to ensure its survival.

Research limitations/implications

The absence of quantitative data focusing on corporate library services adversely impacts the future of corporate libraries. Until the professional association(s) representing the interests of corporate libraries develop, validate and administer a survey of corporate library services and costs, corporate librarians will remain at a competitive disadvantage when discussing the future of the corporate library.

Originality/value

The paper discusses best practices in corporate libraries.

The urbanization of poverty is a structural trend embodied in the sprawling urban slums of the developing countries. It remains a largely unacknowledged dynamic. This is particularly true in terms of the population-level patterns of social well-being derived from urban slum prevalence or proportion of the total population living in urban slum conditions. In particular, there is increasing evidence of an “urban penalty” wherein urban slum dwellers exhibit poorer health outcomes than non-slum urban residents and even rural populations. We articulate the proposition that urban slum prevalence is a key factor shaping population-level rates of social well-being in the developing countries, measured at the national level. Further, we develop the proposition drawn from political economy of health theorization suggesting cross-national dependency relations substantially influence urban slum conditions. In turn, the structural dynamics of the world economy underlie urban slum prevalence which itself has a direct influence on population-level patterns of social well-being as measured by infant and under-five mortality, maternal mortality, and life expectancy at birth. We conclude by arguing for greater empirical attention focusing upon the consequences of dependency relations as expressed in the built urban environment and the impact of urban slum prevalence as a key social condition impacting well-being in the less developed countries.

Abstract

Purpose

While science has researched the impact of air pollution on human health, the economic dimension of it has been less researched so far. Renewable energy consumption is an important factor in determining the level of life expectancy and reducing health expenditure. Thus, this study aims to investigate the impact of renewable energy, carbon emissions, health expenditure and urbanization on life expectancy in G-7 countries over the period of 2000–2019.

Design/methodology/approach

This study has adopted a novel Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR). Furthermore, as a robustness check for MMQR, the fully modified ordinary least square, dynamic ordinary least squares and fixed effect ordinary least square estimators have been used.

Findings

The results indicated that renewable energy consumption, health expenditure and urbanization lead to an increase in life expectancy across all quantiles (5th to 95th), whereas higher carbon dioxide emissions reduce life expectancy at birth across all the quantiles (5th to 95th).

Practical implications

The empirical findings conclude that governments should recognize their potential in renewable energy sources and devise policies such as tax-related regulations, or relevant incentives to encourage further investments in this field.

Originality/value

This paper in comparison to the other research studies used MMQR to investigate the impact of factors affecting life expectancy. Also, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, so far no study has investigated the impact of renewable energy on life expectancy in G-7 countries.
