Abstract

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

Abstract

Purpose

At present, over 95 percent of the manufactured packages are still being wire bonded. Owing to the ongoing trend of miniaturization, material changes, and cost reduction, wire bond‐related failures are becoming increasingly important. This paper aims to understand these kinds of failures.

Design/methodology/approach

Different finite element (FE) techniques are explored to their ability to describe the thermo‐mechanical behavior of the wire embedded in the electronic package. The developed nonlinear and parametric FE models are able to predict the strong nonlinear behavior of wire failures and multi‐failure mode interaction accurately and efficiently.

Findings

It is found that both processing and testing environments as well as the occurrence of delamination strongly increase the risk for wire failures. The results indicate that processing and testing influences are much less than those of the delamination.

Practical implications

Package designers should focus on limiting the occurrence of delamination around wire bond and/or stitch areas.

Originality/value

Combining the strengths of predictive modeling with simulation‐based optimization methods, the optimal wire shape is obtained.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate and to assess the capabilities of the most common finite element (FE)‐based tools to deal with global‐local analysis. Two kinds of coupling were investigated: shell to shell and shell to solid.

Design/methodology/approach

The issue of connecting non‐matching FE global and local models, characterized by different mesh refinements and/or different element types, was addressed by introducing appropriate kinematic constraints on the nodes at the interfaces. The coupling techniques available in the three FE‐based codes (ABAQUS®, NASTRAN® and ANSYS®), were assessed by applying them on a common numerical test case (non‐linear buckling analysis of a square plate). Results of the global‐local simulations were compared to the results obtained for relevant reference solutions.

Findings

The continuity of displacements and stresses across the interface between global and local models and the influence of the presence of the local model on the global model solution were used as parameters to test the quality of the results. It was observed that the tools implemented in the different codes provide different results. The results characterized by a higher quality were found by using the Multi Point Constraint available in ABAQUS®.

Originality/value

When dealing with complex structures, multi‐scale (global‐local) approaches are commonly adopted to optimize the computational cost by increasing mesh refinements and/or introducing elements with different formulations in specific region of the structures identified as “local model”. In this paper an overview of the coupling tools available in the main commercial FE code is given.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present a computational framework to generate numeric enrichment functions for two-dimensional problems dealing with single/multiple local phenomenon/phenomena. The two-scale generalized/extended finite element method (G/XFEM) approach used here is based on the solution decomposition, having global- and local-scale components. This strategy allows the use of a coarse mesh even when the problem produces complex local phenomena. For this purpose, local problems can be defined where these local phenomena are observed and are solved separately by using fine meshes. The results of the local problems are used to enrich the global one improving the approximate solution.

Design/methodology/approach

The implementation of the two-scale G/XFEM formulation follows the object-oriented approach presented by the authors in a previous work, where it is possible to combine different kinds of elements and analyses models with the partition of unity enrichment scheme. Beside the extension of the G/XFEM implementation to enclose the global–local strategy, the imposition of different boundary conditions is also generalized.

Findings

The generalization done for boundary conditions is very important, as the global–local approach relies on the boundary information transferring process between the two scales of the analysis. The flexibility for the numerical analysis of the proposed framework is illustrated by several examples. Different analysis models, element formulations and enrichment functions are used, and the accuracy, robustness and computational efficiency are demonstrated.

Originality/value

This work shows a generalize imposition of different boundary conditions for global–local G/XFEM analysis through an object-oriented implementation. This generalization is very important, as the global–local approach relies on the boundary information transferring process between the two scales of the analysis. Also, solving multiple local problems simultaneously and solving plate problems using global–local G/XFEM are other contributions of this work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate on the behaviour of a delaminated stiffened panel; the delamination growth is simulated via fracture elements implemented in B2000++® code based on the Modified Virtual Crack Closure Technique (MVCCT), matrix cracking and fibre failure have been also taken into account.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to correctly apply the MVCCT on the delamination front a very fine three-dimensional (3D) mesh is required very close to the delaminated area, while a 2D-shell model has been employed for the areas of minor interest. In order to couple the shell domain to the solid one, shell-to-solid coupling elements based on kinematic constraints have been used.

Findings

Results obtained with the global/local approach are in good correlation with those obtained with experimental results.

Originality/value

The global/local approach based on kinematic coupling elements in conjunction with fracture elements allows to investigate and predict the behaviour of a stiffened delaminated composite panel in an efficient and effective way.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a methodology for the evaluation of transport aircraft fuselages constructed in a semi-monocoque design.

Design/methodology/approach

A fuselage barrel was computed statically and dynamically using finite element methods. Static analysis was conducted using a global/local approach in which the section loads of the global model were used as load introduction in the local model. Subsequently, a crash analysis was performed, and the results from both disciplines were evaluated by either an optimization or parameter variation algorithm.

Findings

The presented process chain has been developed for use in preliminary design stages to assess aircraft configurations with regard to statics and dynamics. Parameter variation and optimization were conducted, proving functionality of the methodology.

Research limitations/implications

In this early stage of methodology development only one exemplary static load case is considered and the fuselage design is limited to a constant section.

Practical implications

The presented process chain shows an approach to couple different disciplines to reduce the analysis time in aircraft preliminary design phase.

Originality/value

This methodology couples static design and crashworthiness aspects at an early design stage to avoid time- and cost-intensive redesign in subsequent detailed design stages. The process chain introduced in this paper uses a parameterized approach, making this methodology applicable for each fuselage in semi-monocoque design.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the critical parameters that influence ball grid array and chip size package fatigue life in a random vibration environment by using a design of experimental (DOE) approach using simulation results.

Design/methodology/approach

The use of DOE and analysis of variation to identify the critical parameters and a response surface to generate a functional form for global modeling would be determined. Once the global modeling’s functional form was known, it can be used as boundary condition, which would be input to a local model. Knowing the critical stress, one would estimate the fatigue life from a damage model. It is the curvature of the printed wiring board in the region of the component of interest that is driving the component’s solder joint damage. The approach in this present work involves global-local modeling approaches. In the global model approach, the vibration response of the printed circuit board (PCB) will be determined.

Findings

This global model will give the response of the PCB at specific component locations of interest. This response is then fed into a local stress analysis for accurate assessment of the critical stresses in the solder joints of interest. The stresses are then fed into a fatigue damage model to predict the life.

Originality/value

The analysis proposed in this paper uses a failure type approach to damage analysis and involves global and local model approaches.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide insights into glocalisation of international channels of distribution. The study also seeks to identify the key principles and patterns of glocalisation in general.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors utilise the single case study approach to study glocalisation in international channels of distribution by conducting in‐depth interviews with the firm's senior executives.

Findings

Results reveal that the firm employs glocal channels of distribution strategies. The study specifically identifies two types of glocalisation: inter‐decision and intra‐decision, and it is found that the firm follows a combination of both. The findings also suggest that the decision on how to glocalise channel strategies is based upon the firm's global practices as well as several local conditions specific to individual markets.

Practical implications

The study concludes that there is no uniform formula to pursue glocalisation. Firms may choose to pursue inter‐decision or intra‐decision glocalisation, or a combination of both. However, the decision should be based on a careful assessment of the firm's global philosophy, the channel decision involved, and ground realities in each market.

Originality/value

The study shows how glocalisation can be applied to international channel strategies. The study fills the gap in prior literature by throwing light on the lesser understood “global dimension” of a glocal strategy. The study may be the first to identify different types of glocal strategies and thus offers relevant insights into the concept of glocalisation. The study also adds to the limited knowledge on practicable application of glocalisation among both academics and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to research the e‐government architecture issue as a means of addressing the interoperability gap. It will incorporate the new knowledge acquired in the e‐government integration methodology of the interconnectivity of cross‐layers. These layers include the vertical direction of strategy, business, process, service and information.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology used in this research as it progressed was component‐base driven and involved the exploration of vertical e‐government integration and common service interoperability between business and IT. The realization of this methodology first required a technical foundation setup followed by a business semantics study and a new concept of enterprise integration. The lack of interconnectivity between these layers is the main concerns with the implication that e‐government architecture needs a robust micro‐mechanism of semantic messaging and metadata to coordinate across layers.

Findings

E‐government architecture became pervasive in the twenty‐first century due to its significant growth in terms of huge volume transactions, the citizens' new service concept, and sophisticated businesses. Enterprise architecture mainly mediates between business and IT to minimize the gap by improving governance, agility and business integrity. All of these disciplines and principles should be applied to attain e‐government transformation and vertical interoperability and common services provisioning are the major findings in the research.

Originality/value

This paper contribute new concept of enterprise vertical integration in e‐government. The integrated solution of coherence of approaches forms the basis of this new concept; it serves as the backbone in vertical integration and addresses the e‐government enterprise gap. It is expected to provide further insights into micro process integration across e‐government enterprise layers.

Abstract

Using Triad-based multinational enterprises as their empirical setting, influential scholars in international management uncovered key organizational characteristics needed to create globally integrated and locally responsive multinationals. They proposed a “modern” theory of multinationals' organization (Hedlund, 1994). But recently, a new generation of multinationals from emerging markets has appeared. Little is known about their organizational choices and some scholars even doubt that they leverage organizational capabilities altogether. Does the “modern” theory still hold in their case? This exploratory study of three emerging-market multinationals (EMNEs) discloses that for reasons related to their origin in emerging economies and to the competitive specificities of these economies, EMNEs approach the global and local conundrum in ways which are both similar – and vastly different – from recommendations of the “modern” theory. We inductively develop a new theory that accounts for the evolution of organizational capabilities in EMNEs to reconcile global integration and local responsiveness. We discuss its implications for the executives of both emerging and Triad-based multinationals.
