Abstract

Gives an account of Count N.S. Mordvinov (1754‐1845) who was a Minister of Economics, an economist and a scholar of Adam Smith′s economics who effectively politicized Smithian economic ideas and the need for economic freedom in Tsarist Russia. His advice, given to Tsar Alexander I and to Tsar Nicholas I, was embodied in legislation but did not appear to have administrative impact. Although the economic ideas of Adam Smith had a political dimension alien to the objectives of the Russian rulers, the Smithian values, as promoted by Count Mordvinov and embodied in his written works, having been imported as early as 1760‐1770, have not previously been discussed and debated in the twentieth century.

Abstract

Political and social economists are interested in understanding a connection between Buddhism and economics. The link can be found in Buddhist ethics; the resulting economics is both scientific, in the modern American sense, and normative. Buddhist economics may be regarded as syncretic and its principles may have universal application.

Abstract

This study compares traditional, neoclassical economics with two religiously‐based economic paradigms. The first relies on an application of the teachings of Buddhism. The second, of more recent vintage, is based on Christian principles, and is grounded in the social justice teachings of the Catholic Church of the past 100 years. The exercise of comparing neoclassical economics with these two religiously‐based paradigms is not meant to replace the former with one of the latter, but to provide a pair of prisms through which neoclassical economics can be viewed and fine tuned.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the economics of Tommaso Campanella’s The City of the Sun in two ways. First, it shows that Campanella, an early developer of economics, conceived of the discipline in a systematic way, in the process making it a foundation for statecraft and spiritual growth. Second, the paper discusses topics in the text important to us even today; such as a theory of value, income and wealth distribution, the definition of a production unit, and the role of a theocratic government guided by the philosophers. The introduction puts The City of the Sun and Campanella’s work in a historical setting, concluding that he was an innovator and, at the same time, a representative of the thinking of the time period.

Abstract

Saint Antonino was an early economist and social scientist who addressed the need to design theories of production, value and distribution, in part becuase he saw the interconnectedness of individual elements. The system he discussed is more general than narrowly economic, embracing as it does meta‐history, God and men. His views are notable for their generality, their optimism in the dark pages of history, and the simple notion that all good will comes from pursuing a way to Christian polity.
