Abstract

Although educators have written at length about children's attitudes and the implications these have upon their book preferences (e.g., Rue and Evard, 1963, “Student Evaluations of Newberry Award Books”; Smith, 1972, “The Popularity of Children's Fiction as a Function of Reading Ease and Related Factors”; Groves, 1949, “Concern with the Present: Are Books Meeting this Need?”), there seems to be little attempt to ascertain how much popular media affects children's reading and/or viewing patterns. National magazines such as Time and Newsweek have periodically reported on television's stronghold on today's youth. But their reports largely have not been based on any systematic gathering of data.

The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon social marketing and its implications for the contemporary marketing practices (CMP) classification scheme.

11998

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon social marketing and its implications for the contemporary marketing practices (CMP) classification scheme.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopts a theoretical approach. Examples from the public engagement with science are used in the reflection.

Findings

A phenomenon not commonly associated with social marketing is the growing number of science communication, outreach and public activities to engage the public with science. These scientific initiatives, established to drive knowledge‐based societies around the world, are charged with changing the public's behaviour towards science. This analysis shows the application of the CMP classification explicitly to the broader context of social marketing.

Originality/value

This paper examines how complex multiple exchanges, and social and environment influences, associated with social marketing provide a broader context to examine marketing practice. Further investigation is needed as to whether a sixth aspect of marketing practice is required to fully capture social marketing practice.

Abstract

The question has been recently raised as to how far the operation of the Sale of Food and Drugs Acts of 1875, 1879, and 1899, and the Margarine Act, 1887, is affected by the Act 29 Charles II., cap. 7, “for the better observation of the Lord's Day, commonly called Sunday.” At first sight it would seem a palpable absurdity to suppose that a man could escape the penalties of one offence because he has committed another breach of the law at the same time, and in this respect law and common‐sense are, broadly speaking, in agreement; yet there are one or two cases in which at least some show of argument can be brought forward in favour of the opposite contention.

Abstract

IN a departure from usual practice this issue concentrates to a large extent upon a single subject — Mechanical Handling. It coincides with that industry's exhibition at Earls Court from the 9th to 19th of this month, to be opened by the Rt. Hon. Christopher Chataway, M.P., Minister for Industrial Development. In consequence it was necessary to defer some regular features for a time, for which we apologise.

1427

Abstract

Purpose

The paper's purpose is to examine the propensity of recent immigrants to join Irish trade unions compared to Irish workers.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is based on the 2005 Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS), a quarterly survey carried out by the Central Statistics Office.

Findings

Results show that immigrant workers are less likely to join Irish trade unions than comparable native workers. Length of residency is an important factor in the likelihood of immigrants being unionised but employment in the public or private sector assumes even greater importance than nationality in determining union membership.

Research limitations/implications

While the QNHS is generally a robust representative sample survey of the population, errors may occur in the proportion of non‐Irish nationals surveyed due to difficulties of ensuring their inclusion in the sample population. Language may also be an obstacle, particularly for recently arrived immigrants.

Practical implications

From a trade union perspective the results highlight the need for trade unions to regularly conduct organising campaigns targeted at immigrants. Government policy aimed at integrating immigrants into the Irish labour force and ensuring adequate labour standards would be well served by ensuring greater union availability to immigrant workers.

Originality/value

The paper provides a profile and analysis of the extent to which immigrants are joining trade unions compared to Irish workers.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationships among knowledge, wisdom, consciousness and extraordinary consciousness.

1085

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationships among knowledge, wisdom, consciousness and extraordinary consciousness.

Design/methodology/approach

After introducing knowledge, this paper provides: a short review of the literature on the concept of wisdom; an introduction to the concepts of ordinary and extraordinary consciousness; and a brief exploration of the relationships among these concepts.

Findings

Tacit knowledge is in relationship to wisdom. Since extraordinary consciousness by definition is heightened sensitivity to, awareness of, and connection with our unconscious mind, extraordinary consciousness is in support of wisdom.

Originality/value

Introduces concept of extraordinary consciousness.

Abstract

In the 1980s, as the United States encountered international economic and technological challenges, the very ability of the American educational system to produce a competitive labor force, able to learn and solve problems, was questioned. During this past decade, renewed concern about educational quality in the United States motivated over one hundred reports analyzing the shortcomings in our system of education and endorsing reform. All of the principal curriculum areas have been reviewed in this process; moreover, science education has been deemed particularly deficient. Major reports sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) recommend both content revision of science courses and methodological changes in the way science is presented throughout the elementary and secondary grades.
