Abstract

The Scenario We argue in this article that people and their organisations will have to make fundamental alterations in how they operate in a fast‐changing world. Because traditional management courses will not meet this need, a learning by doing organisational change programme is suggested. The ideas expressed are based upon the practical experience of working with line managers but, where appropriate, references are made to support the views expressed.

Abstract

Since the first Volume of this Bibliography there has been an explosion of literature in all the main areas of business. The researcher and librarian have to be able to uncover specific articles devoted to certain topics. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume III, in addition to the annotated list of articles as the two previous volumes, contains further features to help the reader. Each entry within has been indexed according to the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus and thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid information retrieval. Each article has its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. The first Volume of the Bibliography covered seven journals published by MCB University Press. This Volume now indexes 25 journals, indicating the greater depth, coverage and expansion of the subject areas concerned.

Abstract

An ambitious programme was launched in the early 1980s for bringing about an organizational change in planned economy companies. Because of the centralized political and economic power, and strictly hierarchical managerial structures the programme was targeted at the top management teams. The programme consisted of a number of different OD techniques combined into a composite package of four parallel sub‐programmes: educational (the theory and practice of management), realization (the process by which change was introduced), social and psychological (personal and cultural awareness), and research (learning from the experience). The top management group was the nucleus of each change programme. The programme was successfully repeated 20 times in different types of organizations over a five‐year period. Describes the history of the programme, its structure, the main principles and the methods used. Sets out the main lessons learned from using OD programmes to bring about organizational change in communist and post‐communist economies.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

The theme of this conference is an appropriate place to speak about issues of methodology, research and teaching and thus to define and elaborate different approaches and viewpoints to social sciences. The academic discourse in the humanities af ter the end of the Cold War provokes efforts forinter disciplinary explanations of present‐day realities as well as transnational, cross‐cultural and transcontinental subject areas that should provide better academic co‐operation and widening of research perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter aims to list the literature that document the role of hospitality industry achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to summarize those contributions, related to the literature. Extensive literature review was also conducted to explore a critical analysis of sustainable digitalization of the hospitality industry.

Design/Methodology/Approach

The article has undertaken a systematic literature review of all the significant research area of almost last two decades. Keyword searches were performed in Google Scholar search engine, where timeframe of “2001–2023” was used to filter the desired article. Total 141 research articles were primarily identified after the initial search. After screening the articles for relevance or duplicates, finally 107 articles were considered for this study.

Findings

Abstract

The deal on civil nuclear cooperation between India and the United States had an immense global implication on account of its centrality to the contemporary concerns on nuclear proliferation. Much of the debate centered around four critical arguments: first, by amending US nonproliferation laws for India as an exception outside the Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) framework, the deal would weaken the fundamental goal of US nonproliferation policy – to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons beyond the five recognized nuclear weapon states (NWS) under the NPT. Second, why should other states stay in the treaty regime if a nonmember gets the benefits without much of responsibilities? Third, the problems of nuclear proliferation would multiply in the face of current challenges posed by North Korea and Iran. Lastly, the nonproliferation lobbyists were apprehensive that the US–India cooperation could prompt other suppliers, like China, to validate their nuclear cooperation with Pakistan. In view of these arguments it is important to assess whether these arguments are merely debating points or exaggerated concerns or do they hold any strong basis for contention.

Abstract

All attempts to improve corporate performance since World War II have led to nought. Managers are still calling for change. One new school of thought holds that development programmes should emphasize learning not teaching, action not theory and business results not classroom results. Total quality management (TQM) and action learning (AL) are two development programmes which directly address business results. While focusing on different objectives, the two programmes experience common difficulties, the most crucial of which is gaining the commitment and participation of top management in implementing real change. Discusses some of the methods of TQM and AL. It also includes details of the first formal academic AL programme: the Belgian Inter‐University Programme in 1968. The authors believe that AL offers what is missing in those methods which emphasize productivity, such as TQM. Proof of the pudding will be found in AL and TQM combined and fully supported by top management.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to give further insights into Alzheimer's disease (AD), a devastating neurodegenerative disorder which accounts for 60‐80 per cent of late‐onset dementia. AD is genetically complex where three genes are known to cause the early‐onset familial form of disease and ten genes have been identified to contribute to the risk of developing late‐onset sporadic AD.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper discusses the recently identified AD susceptibility loci and outlines the various hypotheses of how these loci and the pathways in which they function may elucidate the aetiology and pathogenesis of sporadic late‐onset AD.

Findings

The loci identified to increase susceptibility to sporadic AD are not random, but instead point to defects in specific biological processes and pathways that contribute to the development of the disease. These include impairments in: innate/adaptive immunity, specifically inflammation and the complement system; endocytosis/intracellualar trafficking, which includes the internalisation of material from the cell surface and the mechanisms by which molecules are transported; and lipid processing. High levels of lipids such as cholesterol have been associated with development of AD in later life.

Originality/value

The paper highlights that determining the function of the known susceptibility loci, and establishing how they increase risk for AD will aid in the development of new treatments.
