Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the analysis of an understudied problem in the economic literature. It proposes a valuation methodology for inputs that come from biodiversity-rich ecosystems/habitats and are used in agro-food production at zero input cost because there is not a market for such inputs.

Design/methodology/approach

Following Onofri et al. (2017), the authors computed the value of the marginal productivity of different inputs in three selected case studies (Angola, Mozambique and Brazil). Results are theory based and rigorous but show a strong contingency, case based, relative dimension that is captured, in the framework, by the “relativity ratio.” The ratio expresses the relative weight of the value generated by the input that comes from biodiversity-rich ecosystems/habitats in the per capita monthly available income of the farmer and aims at conveying additional insights to the economic valuation.

Findings

In this paper, the assessment of agricultural inputs value (price) in the absence of inputs markets is done, with an application to three different case studies. The inputs are peculiar since they come from habitats and ecosystems that are very biodiversity-rich.

Originality/value

The paper proposes a practical, though rigorous, methodology for the assessment of the value (price) of agricultural inputs in absence of inputs markets. Markets do not exist since the inputs come from biodiversity-rich habitats and ecosystems.

Abstract

Improving business processes provides companies with advantages in terms of efficiency and profitability, as well as competitiveness against other companies in the market. Companies that integrate business processes with enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems into digital platforms also have the opportunity to strengthen their weaknesses by recognizing disruptions and bottlenecks in inefficient business processes thanks to this digital transformation. Descriptive and bibliometric analyses were performed in this study for a systematic evaluation of studies on artificial intelligence (AI) in the ERP literature. The studies in which the keywords determined from the AI literature were firstly used together with ERP were investigated from the Scopus database. 837 publications meeting the search criteria were reached and a descriptive analysis of these publications was presented. Then, bibliometric analysis was performed using common author, common citation, and common keyword analysis methods for 296 publications in the article type. Tsinghua University and Obuda University have the most publications according to the results. The most commonly used AI keywords in the ERP studies were “genetic algorithm”, “fuzzy logic”, and “machine learning”. This study aims to guide future studies by providing a systematic and new perspective to researchers and experts working on ERP-AI.

Abstract

Purpose

This impact assessment provides empirical evidence from household producer surveys to test the assumptions surrounding the contribution of participatory varietal selection (PVS) activities on seed sector development. The purpose of this paper is to focus on household access and adoption of common bean varieties from seed provision services and local markets to determine if, and under what social conditions, PVS activities stimulated seed uptake and market participation.

Design/methodology/approach

The propensity score matching technique and simple regression analysis were used to estimate the impact and compare household performance across three farmer groups located in Hoima, Uganda.

Findings

PVS increased access to and adoption of improved varieties and supported additional intermediate development outcomes when farmer group characteristics were aligned with PVS efforts. Specifically, PVS was more likely to stimulate market purchases of newly introduced varieties in the farmer group located closest to markets. The project did not however, improve all the development objectives that were evaluated. PVS most critically, did not increase the probability that households received the specific varieties they desired.

Research limitations/implications

This study found that PVS can support the key pillars of seed sector development. In addition to increasing household access to new varieties, free seed dissemination promoted market participation and stimulated local seed market development.

Originality/value

This study addressed the need to consider intermediate development outcomes in impact assessments of development interventions. The findings clarified the contribution of PVS in the context of broader development goals and identified farmer group dynamics associated with enhanced impacts among rural producers in Uganda.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the contours of the future intellectual property (IP) protocol of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Agreement.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper frames the IP protocol within the architecture of the AfCFTA Agreement, meaning that it will follow the structure of other protocols and will be guided by the Agreement’s foundational principles and objectives. With the place, shape and form of the protocol so established, the paper considers the substantive aspects that ought to be addressed. It also considers provisions on technical assistance, capacity building and cooperation.

Findings

The paper finds that the Tripartite Free Trade Phase 2 IP agenda is a credible starting place, which must be broadened to better meet gendered challenges and the continent’s developmental priorities. This will entail including provisions on specific aspects enumerated in the paper, which must be aligned with provisions on technical assistance, capacity building and cooperation to enhance implementation. The best outcomes in the negotiation, adoption and implementation of the IP protocol will be achieved by an inclusive approach incorporating all national, sub-regional and regional institutions guided by coherent policy and coordinated to ensure efficiency in resources and capacity mobilisation.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first paper to formally consider both the architecture and substantive provisions of the future AfCFTA IP protocol with specific focus on gendered dimensions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to implement a genetic algorithmic geared toward building an optimized investment portfolio exploring data set from stocks of firms listed on the Nigerian exchange market. To provide a research-driven guide toward portfolio business assessment and implementation for optimal risk-return.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach was to formulate the portfolio selection problem as a mathematical programming problem to optimize returns of portfolio; calculated by a Sharpe ratio. A genetic algorithm (GA) is then applied to solve the formulated model. The GA lead to an optimized portfolio, suggesting an effective asset allocation to achieve the optimized returns.

Findings

The approach enables an investor to take a calculated risk in selecting and investing in an investment portfolio best minimizes the risks and maximizes returns. The investor can make a sound investment decision based on expected returns suggested from the optimal portfolio.

Research limitations/implications

The data used for the GA model building and implementation GA was limited to stock market prices. Thus, portfolio investment that which to combines another capital market instrument was used.

Practical implications

Investment managers can implement this GA method to solve the usual bottleneck in selecting or determining which stock to advise potential investors to invest in, and also advise on which capital sharing ratio to reduce risk and attain optimal portfolio-mix targeted at achieving an optimal return on investment.

Originality/value

The value proposition of this paper is due to its exhaustiveness in considering the very important measures in the selection of an optimal portfolio such as risk, liquidity ratio, returns, diversification and asset allocation.

Abstract

Purpose – The purpose of this research was to get the initial information about the phenotype diversity of avocado plants and as an information source of Acehnese avocado germplasm.

Methodology – This research was conducted at Bebesen sub-district Aceh Tengah District, from March to October 2017. Exploration was conducted using the descriptive method with purposive sampling. Plants observed in accordance with predetermined criteria namely plants that have been several times fruitful and preferred by consumers.

Originality – The research shown that the avocado plants in the Bebesen sub-district have a high degree of diversity. The diversity can be seen from canopy width, stem circumference, plant height, stem surface, tree shape, number of branches, branch shape, leaf length, leaf width, leaf area, and leaf shape. The number of superior avocado plants that were sampled was 15 accessions. The similarity level of superior avocado accession in the Bebesen sub-district ranged from 0.34 to 1.00.
