Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the problem of clothing uniform assignment (CUA) and propose an immune co‐evolutionary algorithm to search optimal assignments of uniform garments to employees.

Design/methodology/approach

Multi‐size fitting measures are proposed based on multi‐attribute decision making. An immune co‐evolutionary algorithm incorporating immune inspired mechanisms is proposed to search optimal assignments.

Findings

The experimental results show promising performance. The model and the algorithm are aiming at a valuable problem and can be incorporated into the information systems for large‐scale industrial companies.

Originality/value

Uniform assignment problem is modeled with garment size fitting constraints. Multi‐size fitting measures are proposed based on multi‐attribute decision making and an immune co‐evolutionary algorithm is proposed to search optimal assignments.

Abstract

This paper studies a production planning problem in printed circuit board (PCB) assembly. A PCB assembly line has several non‐identical placement machines, so the placement times by different machines are various to the same type of components. Several mathematical models are formulated in order to obtain a best assignment of components to machines with the objective of minimizing the cycle time to have the best line throughput. Moreover, the data structures of the models are analyzed and compared with other similar models to search a good available algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate these models and is solved by a computer package.

The dynamic vehicle scheduling problem for a shipper involves managing transport of freight originating at various locations to minimise transport costs. The job involves dynamic assignment of vehicles contracted from carriers to loads available at multiple locations on a real time basis. A framework for building a PC‐based expert system to be used as a decision support system is provided. An example expert scheduling system (EXLOAD) built on VP EXPERT, a PC‐based expert system shell is also shown.

Abstract

Purpose

In the literature, there are many methods that can be helpful in strategic management of universities. Some of them are related to the aspect of sustainability, in terms of balancing the level of fulfillment of different, often conflicting objectives, which must be considered when building strategies. These methods include product/service portfolio ones. However, their use is often intuitive and detached from the quantitative aspects of management. The purpose of this paper is to present a proposal of the modification of the portfolio methods through the use of one of discrete optimization problems, namely, the multiple knapsack problem. The proposal is applied to a selected university. The results are presented and discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

The research methodology consists in a conceptual work: combining non-quantitative portfolio methods used in strategic management and the quantitative multiple knapsack problem. The analogy is established between a market sector (capacity) and a knapsack (capacity), a university department value and an object value, the university improvement budget and a knapsack, an object cost and an improvement measure cost. Then, the case study is used to conduct an initial validation of the proposed approach.

Findings

A quantitative model for strategic management of university as a whole or university departments is proposed. It allows to plan and control the application of improvement measures, allowing the university units to take on a better position in the educational market. It has been initially applied to a small university.

Research limitations/implications

The model requires much more real-world case studies. Also, it will usually be difficult to establish the cost of running individual university units as well as the cost of corrective measures. The capacity of knapsacks – here of market sectors – will also be difficult to calculate. The method to be used here is activity-based costing, but it will not solve all the problems immediately, as its practical application is difficult.

Practical implications

The proposed model will allow to plan and evaluate strategic changes of university as a whole and its units’ position using quantitative values and to consider various strategic scenarios.

Social implications

In order to establish the data necessary to construct the model, various stakeholders will have to cooperate (the university promotion department, the accounting representatives, the student and industry representatives etc.), probably for the first time. Such cooperation will improve the university position even if the model itself will not be able to be applied immediately.

Originality/value

The link between portfolio methods and a quantitative optimization method for university management purposes has been established in the paper for the first time in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research paper is to discuss cellular manufacturing is discussed under conditions of changing product demand. Traditional cell formation procedures ignore any changes in demand over time from product redesign and other factors. However given that in today's business environment, product life cycles are short, a framework is proposed that creates a multi‐period cellular layout plan including cell redesign where appropriate.

Design/methodology/approach

The framework is illustrated using a two‐stage procedure based on the generalized machine assignment problem and dynamic programming. This framework is conceptually compared to virtual cell manufacturing, which is useful when there is uncertainty in demand rather than anticipated changes in demand. A case study is used to explain how the concept would work in practice.

Findings

One major characteristic of the proposed method is that it is flexible enough to incorporate existing cell formation procedures. It is shown through an example problem that the proposed two‐stage method is better than undergoing ad hoc layout changes or ignoring the demand changes when shifting or cell rearrangement costs exist. It also sheds some insight into cellular manufacturing under dynamic conditions.

Originality/value

This paper should be useful to both researchers and practitioners who deal with demand changes in cellular manufacturing.

Abstract

Logistics may be defined as the provision of goods and services from a supply point to a demand point. In recent times the cost of transport has become a major expense for organizations as a result of escalating fuel costs and higher capital costs for the replacement of vehicles. Hence vehicle routeing in an organization has become an important managerial function for the availability of transport facilities, minimizing the late arrival of the vehicles and providing good service to the employees. Discusses the formulation, solution algorithms, and implementation strategies to be followed in vehicle routeing in a public sector undertaking in India, employing 7,861 people. The well known Clarke and Wright algorithm has been used to obtain the initial solution, and the norms formulated by the management are used to help implement the action plans so as to improve vehicle‐routeing efficiency. Highlights specific financial and other benefits on application of the required routeing. Also mentions some of the limitations of the approach.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to construct for the first time a link between the project members' assignment and personality balance.

Design/methodology/approach

This study develops a project assignment quantitative model that maximizes the team's personality balance while meeting the capability requirements.

Findings

The findings indicate that a more balanced project team that contributes to project performance can be obtained before project starts.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is limited to the exploration of Belbin's personality types. However, it offers a generic approach that can be applied to other personality categorization.

Practical implications

The paper helps practitioners form a personality balanced project team to improve the project performance by reducing the complexity of project communication and problem solving.

Originality/value

The paper develops for the first time a project assignment model that considers both capability and personality and allocates project personnel in such a way that the most suitable personnel is selected from a group of qualified capable candidates, to increase the possibility of success for the project.

Abstract

In many educational and professional environments, diversely talented teams are created to solve problems requiring different skill sets. In the educational setting teams may be used to conduct a learning project; in a work setting teams may be used to develop a new product. Teams are usually constructed from “players” in different functional departments. Because the “best” player in each department can’t be on all teams, constructing teams so that all teams function optimally is a challenging and often arbitrary process. This chapter describes a multiple criteria model for team selection that balances skill sets among the groups and varies the composition of the teams from period to period. The results of applying this team selection model to a cohort-structured Executive MBA (EMBA) program and to team selection in a Fortune 100 corporation are presented. The results of this project suggest that an implantation of a quantitative method, such as our Model III, markedly improves team performance and achieves that improvement in a timelier manner.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to maximize the total demand covered by the established additive manufacturing and distribution centers and maximize the total literal weight assigned to the drones.

Design/methodology/approach

Disaster management or humanitarian supply chains (HSCs) differ from commercial supply chains in the fact that the aim of HSCs is to minimize the response time to a disaster as compared to the profit maximization goal of commercial supply chains. In this paper, the authors develop a relief chain structure that accommodates emerging technologies in humanitarian logistics into the two phases of disaster management – the preparedness stage and the response stage.

Findings

Solving the model by the genetic and the cuckoo optimization algorithm (COA) and comparing the results with the ones obtained by The General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) clear that genetic algorithm overcomes other options as it has led to objective functions that are 1.6% and 24.1% better comparing to GAMS and COA, respectively.

Originality/value

Finally, the presented model has been solved with three methods including one exact method and two metaheuristic methods. Results of implementation show that Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) has better performance in finding the optimal solutions.
