Abstract

Purpose

Government of India has been addressing the issue of homelessness through shelters in urban areas, mandated with provision of basic amenities including drinking water and washrooms. This research paper aims to investigate into the condition of such homeless shelters in terms of importance of and satisfaction from mandatory amenities therein as perceived by users, i.e. urban homeless poor.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from a survey spanning a sample of 401 shelter inmates have been used to construct a service quality performance matrix (SQPM) to analyse the importance of amenities and satisfaction of shelter inmates out of these amenities. A priority order of these amenities for improvement has been drawn thereafter with a customer satisfaction index (CSI).

Findings

The results of SQPM show ten items registering high importance-low satisfaction. Amenities such as utensils for cooking and psycho-social counselling are important but not available. Priority-wise amenities that need to be improved are: psycho-social counselling, facility of referral and transport, utensils for cooking, childcare facilities, waste management, adequate fire safety measures, recreation space, pest and mosquito control, first aid and kitchen/cooking space and equipment needed for cooking.

Practical implications

A total of 10 amenities have been ranked in order of priority, for which, the government needs to define its improvement action plans for delivering maximum satisfaction to inmates of shelters out of their stay.

Originality/value

The findings reveal that urban homeless staying in shelters are being deprived of many of the amenities earmarked as mandatory. Existing studies on shelters in India are usually descriptive, providing a summary of available amenities therein. This study is the first to contribute to literature on housing by applying SQPM and CSI on amenities available at homeless shelters.

Abstract

Purpose

Market-driven skill development initiatives are essential in India as a large segment of its educated workforce is unemployed or unemployable, with little or no job skills. The “Skill India Mission” aims at endowing the youth with skills that can increase their employability and productivity in jobs. The success of the Mission depends on State-level initiatives in tandem with the Mission. This paper analyzes the impact of job offers extended to the youth of Jharkhand State as an outcome of State-level skill development initiatives. Its broad objective is to assist the Government in the delivery of skill-based training programs.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered across various districts of Jharkhand to capture the perceptions of trainees and training centers. The final sample of 498 had attended training in apparel, retail, security, automotive, food and beverage service, IT/ITES, electronics and construction.

Findings

Statistical analysis reveals a significant increase in the economic status of trainees after joining jobs. Other findings include apathy toward migration, a mismatch between skills gained and jobs, and a dearth of qualified trainers.

Practical implications

The authors recommend counseling and attitudinal restructuring of the youth, designing multi-skill training programs and promoting entrepreneurial spirit. The authors also propose a stakeholder-based approach for curriculum development to fill the demand–supply gap of training and ensure better trainee retention. The Government could benefit by focusing the skilling programs on the career adaptability of trainees. Skill development and vocational education and training may not operate in silos. Training programs could be planned to be conducted jointly through ITIs and State-level training institutions under the Skill India Mission.

Originality/value

This research could increase the effectiveness of skill development initiatives across India, thereby improving the socioeconomic status of the youth thus trained. The authors emphasize developing a people-centric perspective in skilling, shifting attention from the existing industry-driven approach, to strike a balance between the demand and supply sides. This perspective can optimize skill development initiatives by reducing the gap between employment demand and skill development.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze how perceived organizational support (POS), perceived supervisor support (PSS) and perceived co-worker support (PCS) as components of social exchange at work influence turnover intention through affective commitment.

Design/methodology/approach

Perception of sales professionals working in life insurance companies, categorized as liquid knowledge workers, on the study variables was assessed through a questionnaire-based survey. Data on a sample of 212 such professionals across 11 companies were analyzed using structured equation modeling. Maximum likelihood estimate method was used to test the extent of model fit. Mediation has been confirmed through bootstrapping.

Findings

Results reveal a significant direct relationship between PSS and turnover intention. POS and PCS were found to have significant indirect effects on turnover intention, mediated by affective commitment.

Research limitations/implications

Overall results prompt the authors to recommend that organizations in insurance business must invest resources in promoting organizational support and also adopt a supportive work culture in which social exchange can easily occur. Level of withdrawal intention among sales professionals can be lowered by establishing emotional bonding with them. Supervisors may also be provided adequate training in soft skills to support their subordinates.

Originality/value

This study has highlighted that support at workplace is a binding force between an employee and his/her organization, and thus it negatively affects his/her withdrawal intention directly or indirectly via affective commitment. This paper stands out in the multitude of existing research as especially the relation of PCS and turnover intention has been explored less. It also adds to the scarce literature available on turnover intention among liquid knowledge workers in Indian insurance sector.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the link of effective change implementation (CIE) with select human resource (HR) practices and employees' resistance to change (RTC) amidst ongoing mergers in Indian public sector banks (PSBs). It also intends to highlight the role of RTC as a mediator in this mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used a structured questionnaire administered through a survey of employees of select PSBs that have undergone mergers. The hypothesized relationships were tested on 220 responses with structural equation modelling.

Findings

Training and communication of change as HR practices were found to have significant effects in implementing change. RTC fully mediated the relationship of training and CIE, and partially mediated the association of communication and CIE. Communication had a stronger influence on RTC than training. This finding upholds the importance of communication but also implies that training can reinforce effective communication of change and may not affect the implementation if not directed towards handling resistance.

Practical implications

The significance of communication as a finding supports the theory of planned behaviour. The authors’ results also align with the social exchange theory and can be extended to the job demands-resources model. PSBs may plan for phase-wise training initiatives starting from the announcement till the end of a merger. PSBs also need to effectively communicate all relevant HR issues to employees, thus being transparent and fair. Both online and offline modes of communication can be explored. Overall, the senior management has to imbibe the handholding of employees in the short term and a sense of empathy in the longer term.

Originality/value

Research on HR in Indian banking mergers seems to take a back seat vis-à-vis strategic issues and financial performance. There also is a limited empirical examination of the role of HR practices in effective change implementation. This paper addresses both these issues by proposing a conceptual model and empirically validating it amidst the merger of PSBs. The authors also highlight how training and communication are effective in handling resistance to change.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and rank different dimensions of strategic orientation and firm’s performance using the approach of interpretive structural modeling.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses interpretative structural modeling and the MICMAC technique to establish a hierarchical relationship among different dimensions of entrepreneurial orientation and manufacturing performance of Indian SMEs.

Findings

The final outcome of interpretative structural modeling and the MICMAC analysis revealed a relationship between the variables under study along with the categorization of all in two different categories, depending upon their driving power and dependency, which decision-makers can also use while devising their strategy to improve performance.

Originality/value

To date, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no significant contribution about such interrelationship was reported; therefore, this study is one of its types to fill this gap.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of market orientation on performance and to figure out the mediator effect of incremental innovation on this relationship with an implementation on Indian small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

Following a survey among 333 owners/managers of SMEs in Indian, six research propositions were framed. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and regression analysis was used for the purpose of data analysis.

Findings

The outcome of the study demonstrates a significant effect of market orientation on SMEs performance. In addition, the mediating effect of innovation between market orientation and business performance was not supported in the context.

Research limitations/implications

This study uses cross-sectional research, which limits the ability to test the causality; hence, such studies should be replicated in other settings also to get more evidences about the relationship.

Practical implications

The research will help managers especially in manufacturing SMEs of developing countries to understand benefits of being market-oriented to improve performance.

Originality/value

The study attempts to enrich the market orientation literature especially in developing economies. It identifies the significant effect of interfunctional coordination on performance of small and medium enterprises working in more volatile environment. Further, the study also examines mediating role of innovation between market orientation and performance linkage.

Objetivo

El objetivo del estudio es examinar el efecto de la orientación al mercado en el desempeño empresarial así como el efecto mediador de la innovación incremental en una muestra de PYMEs indias.

Diseño/metodología

Utilizando una muestra de 333 propietarios/gestores de PYMEs en India se desarrollan seis proposiciones que se contrastaron mediante análisis factorial confirmatorio y análisis de regresión lineal.

Resultados

Los resultados muestran un efecto significativo de la orientación al mercado en los resultados de las PYME. Además, se corrobora el efecto mediador de la orientación al mercado.

Limitaciones/implicaciones

El estudio usa datos de sección cruzada lo que limita su capacidad para contrastar causalidad, por lo que sus resultados deberían ser contrastados en otros contextos para obtener mayores evidencia acerca de las relaciones.

Implicaciones prácticas

Este trabajo ayudara a los gestores de las PYME manufactureras en países en desarrollo a entender el beneficio para la empresa de la orientación al mercado.

Originalidad/valor

Este estudio plantea la existencia de mediadores en la relación entre la orientación al mercado y los resultados empresariales en países en desarrollo.

Objetivo

O objetivo do estudo é examinar o efeito da orientação do mercado sobre o desempenho e também descobrir o efeito mediador da inovação incremental nessa relação com uma implementação em PMEs indianas.

Desenho/metodologia

Após uma pesquisa com 333 proprietários/gerentes de PMEs na Índia, seis proposições de pesquisa foram elaboradas. A análise fatorial confirmatória (AFC) e a análise de regressão foram utilizadas para fins de análise dos dados.

Resultados

O resultado do estudo demonstra um efeito significativo da orientação para o mercado no desempenho das PMEs. Além disso, o efeito mediador da inovação entre a orientação para o mercado e o desempenho dos negócios não foi apoiado no contexto observado.

Limitações/implicações da pesquisa

Este estudo utiliza a pesquisa transversal que limita a capacidade de testar a causalidade, portanto, tais estudos devem ser replicados em outros locais também para obter mais evidências sobre a relação estudada.

Implicações práticas

A pesquisa ajudará os gerentes, especialmente na manufatura de pequenas e médias empresas dos países em desenvolvimento, a entenderem os benefícios de serem orientados para o mercado para desta forma melhorar o desempenho.

Originalidade/valor

O estudo é um dos que aborda o papel da mediação na orientação para o mercado e no relacionamento de desempenho nos países em desenvolvimento.
