Abstract

Purpose

This chapter explores a descriptive theory of multidimensional travel behaviour, estimation of quantitative models and demonstration in an agent-based microsimulation.

Theory

A descriptive theory on multidimensional travel behaviour is conceptualised. It theorizes multidimensional knowledge updating, search start/stopping criteria and search/decision heuristics. These components are formulated or empirically modelled and integrated in a unified and coherent approach.

Findings

The theory is supported by empirical observations and the derived quantitative models are tested by an agent-based simulation on a demonstration network.

Originality and value

Based on artificially intelligent agents, learning and search theory and bounded rationality, this chapter makes an effort to embed a sound theoretical foundation for the computational process approach and agent-based micro-simulations. A pertinent new theory is proposed with experimental observations and estimations to demonstrate agents with systematic deviations from the rationality paradigm. Procedural and multidimensional decision-making are modelled. The numerical experiment highlights the capabilities of the proposed theory in estimating rich behavioural dynamics.

This paper aims to put forward a kind of new method of intelligent trust engineering metrics for application of mobile ad hoc network (MANET).

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to put forward a kind of new method of intelligent trust engineering metrics for application of mobile ad hoc network (MANET).

Design/methodology/approach

The new method calculates the communication trust by using the number of data packets among the nodes of MANET, predicts intelligently the trust and calculates the comprehensive trust based on the historical trust; then calculates the energy trust based on the residual energy of the nodes of MANET, calculates the direct trust based on the communication trust and energy trust. The new method calculates the recommendation trust based on the recommendation reliability; adopts the adaptive weighting to calculate the integrated direct trust by considering the direct trust with recommendation trust.

Findings

Based on the integrated direct trust and the factor of trust propagation distance, the indirect trust among the nodes of MANET is calculated. The above process can be optimized based on the dynamic machine learning presented in this study. The advantage of the new method is its intelligent ability to discover malicious nodes.

Originality/value

The advantage of the new method is its intelligent ability to discover malicious nodes which can partition the network by falsely reporting other nodes as misbehaving and proceeds to protect the network. The authors have done the experiments based on the tool kits such as NS3, QualNet, OMNET++ and MATLAB. The experimental results show that this study’s approach can effectively avoid the attacks of malicious nodes, and more conformable to the actual engineering application of MANET.

The purpose of this paper is to improve the tribological properties of Polyamide 1010 (PA 1010) in rolling friction with traction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the tribological properties of Polyamide 1010 (PA 1010) in rolling friction with traction.

Design/methodology/approach

PA1010 composites filled with zinc oxide whiskers (ZnOw) were prepared by hot compression molding. The compressive properties of the composites were measured with an electronic material tester and the tribological behavior in rolling friction with traction of nylon composites was studied with a two‐roller contact rolling tester.

Findings

The results indicate that the compression modulus of composites increases with the rising content of ZnOw. Both the ultimate compression strength and the compression yield strength of composites increase to the maximum value when the content of ZnOw is 15 wt%. Both the traction coefficient and the slip ratio of each composite were influenced by the traction load and the normal load. In addition, the ZnOw proportion affected the slip ratio of the composites. The experimental results demonstrate that composites including 10 wt% and 15 wt% ZnOw exhibit lighter wear and lower slip ratio. The wear rate of the nylon composites is increased as the normal load increases due to the rising acting pressure against the nylon composites. The rising traction load also causes inflation in the wear rate of the composites.

Research limitations/implications

The tests in the paper were carried out according to the conditions of tramcars in mining.

Practical implications

PA 1010 composites filled with ZnOw presented the preferable mechanical and tribological properties of PA1010, which can be used in the driving wheel of tramcars in mining and other components requiring high traction coefficient.

Originality/value

The paper studied the tribological properties of PA 1010 composites including ZnOw with special dimensional structure.

The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively examine the influence of formal and informal institutional differences on enterprise investment margin, mode and result.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively examine the influence of formal and informal institutional differences on enterprise investment margin, mode and result.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is based on 2,440 micro samples of large-scale outbound investment from 609 Chinese enterprises from the years 2005 to 2016.

Findings

The study has found that formal institutional differences have little impact on investment scale, but significantly affect investment diversification. In order to avoid the management risks brought by formal institutional differences, enterprises tend to a full ownership structure. However, the choice between greenfield investment and cross-border mergers and acquisitions is not affected by formal institutional differences. In contrast, the impact of informal institutional differences is more extensive. Both formal and informal institutional differences significantly increase the probability of investment failure. Further research found that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) bridges the formal institutional differences.

Originality/value

The study concludes that developing the BRI, especially cultural exchanges with countries alongside the Belt and Road, will help enterprises to “go global” faster and better.

Abstract

Purpose

The Internet of Things (IoT) has attracted a lot of attention in both industrial and academic fields for recent years. Artificial intelligence (AI) has developed rapidly in recent years as well. AI naturally combines with the Internet of Things in various ways, enabling big data applications, machine learning algorithms, deep learning, knowledge discovery, neural networks and other technologies. The purpose of this paper is to provide state of the art in AI powered IoT and study smart public services in China.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reviewed the articles published on AI powered IoT from 2009 to 2018. Case study as a research method has been chosen.

Findings

The AI powered IoT has been found in the areas of smart cities, healthcare, intelligent manufacturing and so on. First, this study summarizes recent research on AI powered IoT systematically; and second, this study identifies key research topics related to the field and real-world applications.

Originality/value

This research is of importance and significance to both industrial and academic fields researchers who need to understand the current and future development of intelligence in IoT. To the best of authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to review the literature on AI powered IoT from 2009 to 2018. This is also the first literature review on AI powered IoT with a case study of smart public service in China.
