Abstract

Purpose

In the management world, leadership is a quality associated with business leaders, social entrepreneurs and political figures. Doctors are rarely considered as possessing or requiring leadership skills. With doctors, one thinks of skill and knowledge, but for some strange reason, leadership is hardly associated with doctors. This paper aims to highlight the leadership aspects unique to doctors. This study highlights why leadership training is imperative for doctors, outlines current status of leadership training for doctors in India and sets out proposals for effective leadership building.

Design/methodology/approach

Methodology is based on a two-pronged explanatory approach – the first is review of current literature in the context of leadership training of doctors, and the second is review of circumstances unique to the line of work undertaken by doctors that shed light on the need for leadership.

Findings

This paper highlights the imperative need for leadership training for doctors in India. It recommends leadership training on a continuous basis in their career life cycle as with the other professions. It also calls for involvement of all stakeholders in the medical community to foster leadership training – medical educational institutions, hospitals, medical councils and members of the medical fraternity.

Practical implications

Akin to leadership training programs conducted for IT and management professionals, this paper recommends that similar programs be conducted for doctors.

Originality/value

There are very few studies conducted in the Indian context on leadership training needs for doctors. This paper explains the importance of leadership training for doctors and suggests ways it can be implemented throughout the medical education life cycle of a doctor’s career.

Abstract

Purpose

The main goal of the physical education (PE) environment is that each individual trained should achieve self-fulfillment with the large group of students involved with their own efforts. Deep learning is applying transferrable knowledge in new situations to help the students master in tough circumstances. In PE training, injuries occur when working together as a team. Safety measures are taken immediately as an emergency response to reduce the potential risk in students by providing first aid. To provide safety measures for the injured student immediately, the environment is monitored in real-time using a GPS.

Design/methodology/approach

Theory of Humanities Education (ToHE) infers that it has less collection of theories and a wide range of applications than the state-of-the-art systems. ToHE allows students to think creatively and play a vital role in one’s health which is a critical aspect in PE. The ToHE theory focuses on two main concepts, i.e. by using a methodological approach to analyse and deep learning to solve the problem. PE motivates college students to follow a healthy and active lifestyle.

Findings

The proposed system is deployed in real time for monitoring the student’s performance and provides an emergency response with an accuracy rate of 90%.

Originality/value

The deep learning offers solutions to the injuries by using the deep convolutional neural network to provide interpretability of the consequence by training it with various injuries that occur in the playground and inappropriate use of sports equipment. A case study provided in this paper outlines an emergency response scenario to an injured student in sports training.

Abstract

Purpose

The application of rinse cycle softener after the household laundry process has become more common in recent times. This study aims to understand the effect of repeated rinse cycle softener treatment on the mechanical and frictional properties of the cotton fabric.

Design/methodology/approach

Cotton-woven fabric is treated with commercial rinse cycle softener repeatedly for 15 times. After treatment, the fabric was evaluated for the changes in mechanical properties using the Kawabata evaluation system.

Findings

The results of this study revealed that the softener treatment reduces the tensile properties (41.25%) and increases the overall extensibility of the fabric up to 20.89%. The shear (34.57%) and bending rigidity of the treated fabric are reduced considerably than the untreated fabric (58.02%). The increment in the fabric softness and fluffiness was confirmed with the increment in the compression and the difference between the initial and final thickness at maximum pressure. Statistical significance (p < 0.05) is noted only in the case of bending and surface friction properties (dynamic friction).

Originality/value

The usage of rinse cycle softeners in the household laundry has a significant influence on the comfort characteristics of the cotton-woven fabric. Repeated usage of rinse cycle softener increased the fabric softness and fluffiness of the fabric and also reduced the tensile properties significantly.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on the stochastic analysis of composite rotor blades with matrix cracking in forward flight condition.

Design/methodology/approach

The effect of matrix cracking and uncertainties are introduced to the aeroelastic analysis through the cross-sectional stiffness properties obtained using thin-walled beam formulation, which is based on a mixed force and a displacement method. Forward flight analysis is carried out using an aeroelastic analysis methodology developed for composite rotor blades based on the finite element method in space and time. The effects of matrix cracking are introduced through the changes in the extension, extension-bending and bending matrices of composites, whereas the effect of uncertainties are introduced through the stochastic properties obtained from previous experimental and analytical studies.

Findings

The stochastic behavior of helicopter hub loads, blade root forces and blade tip responses are obtained for different crack densities. Further, assuming the behavior of progressive damage in same beam is measurable as compared to its undamaged state, the stochastic behaviors of delta values of various measurements are studied. From the stochastic analysis of forward flight behavior of composite rotor blades at various matrix cracking levels, it is observed that the histograms of these behaviors get mixed due to uncertainties. This analysis brings out the parameters which can be used for effective prediction of matrix cracking level under various uncertainties.

Practical implications

The behavior is useful for the development of a realistic online matrix crack prediction system.

Originality/value

Instead of introducing the white noise in the simulated data for testing the robustness of damage prediction algorithm, a systematic approach is developed to model uncertainties along with damage in forward flight simulation.

Abstract

Purpose

Energy-efficiency leads to productivity gains as it can lower operating and maintenance costs, increase production yields per unit of manufacturing input and improve staff accountability. Implementation of energy-efficient technologies amongst industries, the factors influencing them and the barriers to their adoption have been the subject of several studies during the past three to four decades. Though energy-use behaviours of individuals or households are sufficiently explored, industrial energy conservation behaviour is scarcely studied. This study identifies the relationship between the different behavioural elements to open up a door for behaviourally informed intervention research.

Design/methodology/approach

Total interpretive structural modelling technique was used to determine the relationship between different elements of the behaviour of energy managers. Expert responses were collected to understand the relationship between the behavioural elements, through telephone interviews.

Findings

The study identified the relationship between the behavioural elements and found imperfect evaluation as the key element with the highest driving power to influence other elements.

Research limitations/implications

The authors postulate that a behaviourally informed intervention strategy that looks into the elements with high driving power such as imperfect evaluation, lack of focus on energy-saving measures and the lack of sharing energy-saving objectives can lead to: an increase in the adoption of energy efficiency measures and thereby a reduction in the energy efficiency gap; greater productivity gains and reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; Preparation of M&V protocol that incorporates behavioural, organisational and informational barriers.

Social implications

Various policy level interventions and regulatory measures in the energy field which did not address the behavioural barriers are found unsuccessful in narrowing the energy-efficiency gap, reducing the GHG gas emissions and global warming. Understanding the key driving factor of behaviour can help to design an effective intervention strategy to address the barriers to energy efficiency improvement.

Originality/value

Understanding the key driving factor of behaviour can help to design an effective intervention strategy to address the barriers to energy efficiency improvement. This study argues that through the systematic analysis of the imperfect evaluation of energy audit recommendations, it is possible to increase the adoption of energy efficiency measures that can lead to greater productivity gains and reduced GHG emissions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to make an attempt to identify the factors responsible for the adoption of an artificial intelligence (AI)-integrated customer relationship management (CRM) system in Indian organizations with a special focus on security and privacy issues.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted for the identification of factors responsible for the adoption of the AI-integrated CRM system in Indian organizations focusing attention on security and privacy perspective. For this, the adoption theories and models have been studied. The literature available in this context has also been studied with a focus on security and privacy issues. After the initial study, few hypotheses have been formulated and a conceptual model has been developed. These hypotheses were validated with the help of statistical tools by conducting sample survey with 324 usable responses against 36 questionnaires.

Findings

The results of this study highlight that of the eight hypotheses conceptually formulated, one hypothesis was not supported as is evident from the application of statistical analysis. This is the influence of perceived ease of use on attitude of the stakeholders intending to use the AI-integrated CRM system in Indian organizations. The results also transpire that the model so provided has achieved 87% explanative power.

Research limitations/implications

The model so provided has taken the help of the technological acceptance model. It has also used the issues circumscribing menace of security and privacy vulnerabilities. Consideration of the technological acceptance model and aspects of issues of security and privacy has enriched the model rendering its explanative power to 87%.

Practical implications

The model is simple. Practitioners can execute this model without having any complexity. The policymakers could also get inputs from the model, as it has focused specially on security and privacy issues that could help to enhance the trust of the potential users.

Originality/value

Not many studies are found covering the adoption of the AI-integrated CRM system by Indian organizations with a special focus on security and privacy aspects. In this light, this study is a novel attempt.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the business benefit of and factors affecting the use of social customer relationship management (SCRM) in Indian organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

Building on theoretical foundations, a conceptual model of factors affecting SCRM in Indian organizations is developed and empirically tested through a survey and corresponding analysis using SPSS and AMOS software.

Findings

The study presents empirical evidence that technological competence, environmental characteristics and organizational environment positively impact the actual use of SCRM on Indian organizations. Additionally, leadership support of organizations impacts positively the actual use of SCRM in organizations, while the trust factor insignificantly impacts the latter. The actual use of SCRM in organizations was found to have a positive impact on their business benefits.

Research limitations/implications

The theoretical model is built on the constructs of the technology, environment and organizational framework. It has added new factors, such as leadership support and trust, and thereby identified the business benefits of organizations using SCRM mediating through the organizations’ actual use of SCRM. The proposed model is simple, implementable and has a high explanative power of 81 per cent.

Practical implications

The study provides practitioners with evidence and practicable knowledge regarding the means and impact/benefits of SCRM use in Indian organizations.

Originality/value

The study is one of few empirical studies on the topic and contributes valuable knowledge to extant works through additional factors, theoretical conceptualization and empirical scientific findings of both scholarly and executive worth.

Abstract

Purpose

Social media remarkably changed the way of interaction between the consumers and organizations. The increased acceptance of social media has given rise to social commerce (s-commerce) and s-commerce usage is gradually increasing over the last few years. The progressive development of technologies suggests that s-commerce will become the mainstream for marketing and a literature survey indicates that there have not been many studies in this area. The purpose of this paper is to predict the factors influencing consumer intention towards the adoption of s-commerce.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses a survey approach with reference to important behavioural factors such as satisfaction, ethics, trust, enjoyment/easiness, social pressure and awareness. The research model was developed to be in line with the available literature. The data were collected using a five-point Likert scale and the research model was tested using least square regression.

Findings

The results showed that user intention is significantly and positively related to perceived trust, enjoyment/easiness, social pressure, satisfaction and awareness. Also, “intention” was found to be a significant mediating factor for actual usage.

Research limitations/implications

First, the questionnaire was a “snap-shot” instead of longitudinal study. Second, future research should use other moderating variables that may affect the usage of social media. Also the study could apply a variant of research methods to include other techniques such as interviews, which allow for deeper understanding of the problem and issues.

Practical implications

Social media represents an important platform for electronic commerce and has one of the most metamorphic impacts on business. Therefore, investigating the usage of s-commerce with reference to important behavioural factors could provide valuable information for companies in establishing policies and strategies. It could also be useful for management studies and researchers in understanding the consumers’ attitude towards usage of social media for commercial purposes.

Social implications

S-commerce creates opportunities for firms. Based on findings this research provides insights with major implications for marketers, who would like to generate direct sales on social network platforms.

Originality/value

Existing literature focusses largely on the effectiveness of social media. Only a handful has endeavoured to analyse s-commerce systems and the literature on consumers’ behaviour in using s-commerce is not mature yet. This study is one of the few studies in this field, and aims to predict and explain the user acceptance of social media for commercial purposes.

Abstract

Purpose

Encouraging employees to exhibit innovative behaviour at the workplace is the need of the hour. Prior studies reported the impact of organisational justice on innovative behaviour; however, the majority of these studies are from the Western context. Moreover, the underlying mechanism linking these variables, namely, the role of knowledge sharing, is sparse. The purpose of this paper is to examine the mediating role of knowledge sharing in the relationship between organisational justice and innovative behaviour through the lens of social exchange theory in the Indian context.

Design/methodology/approach

Mediation analysis using PROCESS macro was performed on a sample of 288 employees using three structured questionnaires. Participants were recruited from various manufacturing organisations in India. The validity of the hypothesised model was established using AMOS software.

Findings

Organisational justice impacted both knowledge sharing and innovative behaviour. It was also illustrated that knowledge sharing influenced employees’ innovative behaviour. The most important finding is the partial mediation of knowledge sharing in the organizational justice–innovative behaviour relationship.

Originality/value

This study tries to demystify the organisational justice–innovative behaviour relationship by highlighting knowledge sharing as an underlying mechanism. The existing theoretical framework that describes the effects of organisational justice is enriched.

Abstract

Purpose

A porous medium saturated with a nanofluid based on pure water and copper nanoparticles is used for cooling a hemispherical electronic device contained in an annulus space. The disc of the cavity could be inclined at an angle ranging from 0 ° (horizontal disc with dome facing upwards) to 180° (horizontal disc with dome facing downwards). The important surface heat flux generated by the dome leads to high Rayleigh number values reaching 7.29 × 10^10. The purpose of this work is to examine the influence of the nanofluid saturated porous medium on the free convective heat transfer.

Design/methodology/approach

Heat transfer occurring between this active component and the isothermal passive cupola is quantified by means of a three-dimensional numerical study using the control volume method associated to the SIMPLE algorithm.

Findings

The work shows that heat transfer in the annulus space is improved by interposing a porous medium saturated with the water-copper nanofluid.

Originality/value

New correlation is proposed to calculate the Nusselt number for any combination of the inclination angle, the fraction volume, the Rayleigh number and the ratio between the thermal conductivities of the porous medium and the fluid. The wide ranges corresponding to these parameters allow the thermal design of this electronic equipment for various configurations.
