Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to report a research in which the applicability of Fuzzy VIKOR in selecting the appropriate rapid prototyping (RP) technologies in an agile environment was examined.

Design/methodology/approach

Multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) tool can be the best approach for selecting the RP technology because it can handle multiple criteria associated with the selection process. In the research reported in this paper, compromise-based MCDM ranking methodology, namely, Fuzzy VIKOR was used in an agile environment. The best RP technology to produce prototypes of pump impellers was found and the prototype was developed.

Findings

In the case study reported in this paper, it was found that fused deposition modelling (FDM) is the best technique for manufacturing the prototypes of pump impeller. Thus, the application of Fuzzy VIKOR generated the solution, which was acceptable to the decision makers.

Research limitations/implications

In certain situations, Fuzzy VIKOR methodology ends up with one or more solutions. Based on the acceptable advantage and acceptable stability conditions, the compromise solution needs to be derived. The solution derived from the study needs to be checked for practical feasibility by the decision makers.

Practical implications

This case study was conducted in a pump impeller manufacturing unit. Therefore, appropriate RP technology will be selected by the organizations to produce the prototype of pump components. Thus, it implies that the results obtained from this study were validated in a manufacturing environment.

Originality/value

Application of Fuzzy VIKOR for RP technology selection in the context of agile environment is the original contribution of this study.

Abstract

Purpose

The industry is relying on the preventive maintenance techniques that can minimize failures and provide industrial plants with effective equipment, but in many companies the maintenance tasks are performed very frequently and not as per plan and do not take into consideration the conditions of the plant and equipments. The failure of each and every component needs to be studied in order to choose the best maintenance strategy. This paper presents a fuzzy VIKOR (Multicriteria Optimization and Compromise Solution) technique which is used in developing a comprehensive approach for maintenance strategy selection in the Deinking plant of the paper industry to choose the appropriate maintenance strategy thereby reducing the unnecessary cost incurred on the maintenance.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the Fuzzy VIKOR based methodology was applied for determining the maintenance criticality index of the deinking plant of the paper industry. The effect of failure of components were evaluated by three maintenance experts on five performance criteria that is chance of failure, chance of non-detection, downtime length, severity, spare part criticality. The components were ranked according to the maintenance criticality index and thereby implementing the appropriate maintenance strategy.

Findings

The Fuzzy VIKOR technique was applied to calculate the ranking of various components of paper industry based on the views and judgment of three maintenance experts. The proposed technique suggested the appropriate maintenance strategy for various components taking into consideration the maintenance criticality index of the components.

Originality/value

The proposed technique will help the maintenance managers to solve a discrete problem with non-commensurable and conflicting criteria. The study will help the industries to reduce the unnecessary maintenance tasks and thereby reduce the maintenance cost. This will help the maintenance practitioners in choosing the best and most effective strategy for the organization with regard to the market and company situation especially in the changing business requirement of Industry 4.0.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a stochastic multi-criteria decision-making approach to solute the warehouse location problem in the stochastic environment which contains uncertain condition.

Design/methodology/approach

In developed approach, the weight of criteria was calculated by using the stochastic analytic hierarchy process (SAHP) method. Alternative ranking was made and evaluated by fuzzy VIKOR (VlseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje).

Findings

This study dealt with warehouse location selection problem of a supermarket that has sellers in many regions in Turkey and selected proper warehouse.

Originality/value

This study combined SAHP and fuzzy VIKOR methods as a solution approach for warehouse location selection problems.

Abstract

Purpose

Contract incompleteness with deficiency, inconsistency, defectiveness, and ambiguity in contract clauses, which can cause misunderstandings and misinterpretations, may result with disputes in projects. This study aims to investigate contract incompleteness factors with a hybrid fuzzy multi-criteria decision approach.

Design/methodology/approach

Contract incompleteness factors were ranked by fuzzy VIKOR (Visekriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje) method, and the most significant factors were subjected to fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) to examine their causal relationships. The study is not limited to ranking the identified factors solely, since their cause-effect interactions are also essential for proper risk management in construction projects.

Findings

Hybrid use of multi-criteria analysis reveals that ambiguity in enforceability including excessive demands and significant amendments in the scope of works are the top two causal contract incompleteness factors, while lack of implementation details and focus of focal point, and insufficient supporting and technical documents are the most affected ones.

Originality/value

Contractual causes of disputes due to contract incompleteness factors other than requirements of the contracts have been rarely investigated in the literature. The research is one of the first studies in the literature investigating the causal relationship among factors in construction contracts, which might lead to project disputes. Findings are expected to improve contract drafting, eventually contributing to effective risk management in construction projects.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to identify major barriers to the implementation of reverse logistics (RL). Also, the study addresses best practices among reuse, remanufacture, recycling, refurbishment and repair as alternatives for RL processes.

Design/methodology/approach

This study targets supply chain management experts for their opinions regarding the identification of critical barriers and alternatives for RL implementation. Their opinions were extracted through a Web questionnaire based on 14 criteria with 5 alternatives. The tools of multi-criteria decision-making are used for analysis, i.e. fuzzy VIKOR and fuzzy TOPSIS.

Findings

The results indicate that lack of recognition of competitive advantage to be gained through RL practice is the most critical barrier to RL implementation. The least barrier or major facilitator for RL is “supportive initiative for end-of-life products.” The top-ranked alternative in this study is reuse followed by remanufacturing. The least important alternative is “repair” in the case of Pakistan. These alternatives are ranked based on “q values” derived through fuzzy VIKOR.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this study can only be generalized for the manufacturing sector of Pakistan during the period of the study.

Practical implications

The findings of this study will assist managers in deploying the best practices concerning RL.

Originality/value

Fuzzy VIKOR and fuzzy TOPSIS have not been applied to RL alternatives in previous research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the risks involved in the Indian foodgrain supply chain (FSC) and proposes risk mitigation taxonomy to enable decision making.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper used failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) for risk estimation. In the traditional FMEA, risk priority number (RPN) is evaluated by multiplying the probability of occurrence, severity and detection. Because of some drawbacks of the traditional FMEA, instead of calculating RPN, this paper prioritizes the FSC risk factors using fuzzy VIKOR. VIKOR is a multiple attribute decision-making technique which aims to rank FSC risk factors with respect to criteria.

Findings

The findings indicate that “technological risk” has a higher impact on the FSC, followed by natural disaster, communication failure, non-availability of procurement centers, malfunctioning in PDS and inadequate storage facility. Sensitivity analysis is performed to check the robustness of the results.

Practical implications

The outcomes of the study can help in deriving detailed risk mitigation strategy and risk mitigation taxonomy for the improved resilience of FSC.

Originality/value

Specifically, this research investigates the risks for foodgrains supply chain system for a developing country such as India, an area which has received limited attention in the present literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Information-facilitated product recovery system (IFPRS) has captivated industry attention and has developed into a matter of consideration among the researchers because of enhanced climate concerns, jurisdictive logics and societal liabilities. Although IFPRS implementation has become an essential aspect in manufacturing industries functional in the developed nations, still, limited consideration has been given in the literature to analyze the issues to IFPRS implementation for a circular economy (CE) in emerging and developing nations. Therefore, the objective of this study is to recognize issues to implementing IFPRS for a CE in context of select manufacturing industries in India.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, 24 potential issues are established from the literature and from suggestions from the experts. The issues are clubbed under five different perspectives of technical, government, organization, policy and knowledge. Further, fuzzy VIKOR technique is applied on the results obtained to prioritize the identified issues. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to check the robustness of the framework.

Findings

The present study shows that lack of skills and expertise in IFPRS implementation for a CE (I2), deficient capital to implement a CE in IFPRS (I9), inadequate in adopting recent IT technology (I18), feasibility of IFPRS employment for a CE (I6) and no efficient training and program to CE adoption (I21) are the top five potential issues in implementing IFPRS practices for a CE in Indian manufacturing industries.

Research limitations/implications

In literature, limited study has been observed on determining issues to implementation of IFPRS for a CE. A more systematic method and statistical confirmation is necessary to establish further new confronting issues. This study is limited to Indian manufacturing industries.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this study includes identification of issues and later prioritizing them to reflect their severity. This would help the industry practitioners to formulate strategies for handling the issues conveniently.

Abstract

Purpose

Firms operating in the service sector must have a dynamic structure to be competitive in a volatile business environment. The dynamic structure brings skilled employees and talented managers together to create effective strategies for global competition. In traditional retail service companies, the majority of the staff interacts intensively with the clients and engaged in advanced facilities. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the performance results of the banks in Turkey based on the level of customer service and satisfaction within an interdisciplinary frame.

Design/methodology/approach

The fuzzy VIKOR and AHP method has been applied to analyse the performance levels of Turkish banks registered in Borsa Istanbul. In order to obtain the dynamics of data, the customer satisfaction competencies have been identified as the reference points for experts.

Findings

The empirical results confirm that the performance results of the banks vary based on customer satisfaction level and ownership types. The fundamental conclusion clarifies the facilities of the state-owned banks are suitable for meeting customer expectations, private bank's performance level is higher than foreign banks, foreign banks have the weakest performance results based on customer satisfaction level with a negative financial outcomes in local countries and finally, state-owned banks with their strong assets serve the customers in expected manner.

Originality/value

Generating sales revenue based on effective customer services and quality improvement requires prompt response to changing competitive conditions and customer demands. Effective customer service in performance evaluation process has a strategic role in adopting competitive strategies. The originality of the study is to evaluate the performance results of the customer satisfaction using the hybrid approach under the fuzzy environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to cover issues regarding traveling to a tourist destination which has seen war and terrorism. These problems can be addressed altogether, as they are interrelated. Based on tourists’ opinions, this paper aims to focus on measures or steps that can be taken to ensure changing their perceptions about a certain destination.

Design/methodology/approach

This study targets tourism experts for their opinions regarding the measures most necessary to change the perceptions of tourists. Their opinions were extracted through a questionnaire based on three criteria with four alternatives. Furthermore, raw data extracted are studied using the Fuzzy-VIKOR technique to rank the alternatives in order of importance. Moreover, the questionnaire also aims to know the perception of participants by asking them what would make them trust a destination with a history of terrorism.

Findings

The problems captivate the attention of government, guiding them to ensure that they need to focus more on physical security of tourists if they expect tourism industry to thrive. It was found that the steps needed to be taken are in the areas of international trade, cultural exchange programs and social media advertising.

Originality/value

Research based on improving tourist perception of Pakistan to develop Pakistan as a tourist destination is scarce. The study takes four different alternatives into account for image recovery and based on those alternatives, it provides a unique solution to the government in this regard with the necessary steps they need to take and attempts to help the government ensure tourism expansion in the country.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the overall system risk for a foodgrains supply chain capturing the interrelationship among the risk factors and the effect of risk mitigation strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper first calculates the weight of risk factors using an integrated approach of failure mode, effects analysis and fuzzy VIKOR technique. Next, the weights are utilized as input for the weighted fuzzy Petri-net (WFPN) approach to calculate the system risk.

Findings

Two different WFPN models are developed based on the relationships among the risk factors, and both models demonstrate a higher risk value for the overall system.

Originality/value

The proposed methodology will help practitioners or managers understand the complexity involved in the system by capturing the interrelationship behaviour. This study also considers the concurrent effect of risk mitigation strategies for calculating the overall system risk, which helps to improve the system’s performance.
