Abstract

Purpose

Time modeling is a crucial feature in many application domains. However, temporal information often is not crisp, but is subjective and fuzzy. The purpose of this paper is to address the issue related to the modeling and handling of imperfection inherent to both temporal relations and intervals.

Design/methodology/approach

On the one hand, fuzzy extensions of Allen temporal relations are investigated and, on the other hand, extended temporal relations to define the positions of two fuzzy time intervals are introduced. Then, a database system, called Fuzzy Temporal Information Management and Exploitation (Fuzz-TIME), is developed for the purpose of processing fuzzy temporal queries.

Findings

To evaluate the proposal, the authors have implemented a Fuzz-TIME system and created a fuzzy historical database for the querying purpose. Some demonstrative scenarios from history domain are proposed and discussed.

Research limitations/implications

The authors have conducted some experiments on archaeological data to show the effectiveness of the Fuzz-TIME system. However, thorough experiments on large-scale databases are highly desirable to show the behavior of the tool with respect to the performance and time execution criteria.

Practical implications

The tool developed (Fuzz-TIME) can have many practical applications where time information has to be dealt with. In particular, in several real-world applications like history, medicine, criminal and financial domains, where time is often perceived or expressed in an imprecise/fuzzy manner.

Social implications

The social implications of this work can be expected, more particularly, in two domains: in the museum to manage, exploit and analysis the piece of information related to archives and historic data; and in the hospitals/medical organizations to deal with time information inherent to data about patients and diseases.

Originality/value

This paper presents the design and characterization of a novel and intelligent database system to process and manage the imperfection inherent to both temporal relations and intervals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine an extension of the MIN and MAX general analytical expression for triangular fuzzy intervals to trapezoidal ones when Zadeh's extension principle is considered.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to determine the MIN and MAX analytical expressions, the paper exhibits the conventional interval relations and their extension in fuzzy case where trapezoidal fuzzy intervals are assumed. The formalization and the justification of the so‐built analytical expressions are then detailed where mathematical mappings are proposed. The potential use of these operators in the framework of uncertain aggregation operators and ranking fuzzy intervals is shown with illustrative examples.

Findings

It is discovered that the MIN and MAX operations for fuzzy intervals can be formulated by a general analytical form.

Practical implications

The proposed methodology can be directly applied for ranking fuzzy intervals and implementing a large class of uncertain aggregation operators, especially for two‐additive Choquet integral.

Originality/value

The originality of the proposed technique resides in exploiting the interval relations between supports and kernels to express a general and compact analytical MIN and MAX expressions for fuzzy intervals.

Abstract

Purpose

Melting universality, quantification and relative computability into a meta‐synthesis, pansystems theory develops an investigation on W‐fuzziness and 0*‐fuzziness connected with generalized conceptions such as derivative, equation, variational principle and OR. The purpose of this paper is to unify various mathematical structures, fuzziness categories, definitions of systems are unified within a general framework.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper includes topics: pansystems approach to fuzzy systems and relations, pansystems variational principle and Zadeh's extension principle, pansystems clustering and its fuzzy embodiment, pansystems topology and approximation to fuzziness, relative unification of fuzziness and roughness.

Findings

Zadeh extension principle about fuzziness transmission can be considered as a specific model of pansystems extremum principle, and so the more modes can be developed. Based on them a further investigation is present on pansystems clustering, which is a W‐fuzzy clustering, an extension or sublation of traditional one and fuzzy one.

Originality/value

Pansystems clustering embodies mutuality of many logoi of different subbraches with classification‐styled OR, including related interpromotions of the principles among knowledge rediscovery, data mining, mathematical reasoning and the investigations of fuzzy systems. W‐fuzziness and 0*‐fuzziness realize a relative unification for many logoi and principles.

Abstract

Purpose

With respect to multiple attribute group decision-making (MAGDM) in which the assessment values of alternatives are denoted by normal discrete fuzzy variables (NDFVs) and the weight information of attributes is incompletely known, this paper aims to develop a novel fuzzy stochastic MAGDM method based on credibility theory and fuzzy stochastic dominance, and then applies the proposed method for selecting the most desirable investment alternative under uncertain environment.

Design/methodology/approach

First, by aggregating the membership degrees of an alternative to a scale provided by all decision-makers into a triangular fuzzy number, the credibility degree and expect the value of a triangular fuzzy number are calculated to construct the group fuzzy stochastic decision matrix. Second, based on determining the credibility distribution functions of NDFVs, the fuzzy stochastic dominance relations between alternatives on each attribute are obtained and the fuzzy stochastic dominance degree matrices are constructed by calculating the dominance degrees that one alternative dominates another on each attribute. Subsequently, calculating the overall fuzzy stochastic dominance degrees of an alternative on each attribute, a single objective non-linear optimization model is established to determine the weights of attributes by maximizing the relative closeness coefficients of all alternatives to positive ideal solution. If the information about attribute weights is completely unknown, the idea of maximizing deviation is used to determine the weights of attributes. Finally, the ranking order of alternatives is determined according to the descending order of corresponding relative closeness coefficients and the best alternative is determined.

Findings

This paper proposes a novel fuzzy stochastic MAGDM method based on credibility theory and fuzzy stochastic dominance, and a case study of investment alternative selection problem is provided to illustrate the applicability and sensitivity of the proposed method and its effectiveness is demonstrated by comparison analysis with the proposed method with the existing fuzzy stochastic MAGDM method. The result shows that the proposed method is useful to solve the MAGDM problems in which the assessment values of alternatives are denoted by NDFVs and the weight information of attributes is incompletely known.

Originality/value

The contributions of this paper are that to describe the dominance relations between fuzzy variables reasonably and quantitatively, the fuzzy stochastic dominance relations between any two fuzzy variables are redefined and the concept of fuzzy stochastic dominance degree is proposed to measure the dominance degree that one fuzzy variable dominate another; Based on credibility theory and fuzzy stochastic dominance, a novel fuzzy stochastic MAGDM method is proposed to solve MAGDM problems in which the assessment values of alternatives are denoted by NDFVs and the weight information of attributes is incompletely known. The proposed method has a clear logic, which not only can enrich and develop the theories and methods of MAGDM but also provides decision-makers a novel method for solving fuzzy stochastic MAGDM problems.

Abstract

Purpose

SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis is a powerful approach for evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of an organization with an internal perspective. The approach also takes into account the opportunities and the threats from an external point of view. These features make SWOT a commonly used approach in strategic management. The purpose of this paper is to propose an integrated SWOT analysis with multiple preference relations technique, to show the application of the proposed methodology, to prioritize the strategic factors and to present alternative strategies for ABC, a case company, which is targeting to use social media more effectively.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, expert opinions are used to identify SWOT factors of ABC on social media. The obtained findings are evaluated and each factor is prioritized by means of the multiple preference relations technique.

Findings

The proposed evaluation model has four main groups, namely, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats, under which 17 factors are identified. As a result of the evaluations, “O2: Opportunity to contact a large number of users simultaneously at affordable cost” has the highest importance level among other factors. Alternative strategies are developed based on the obtained results.

Originality/value

Decision-makers who have different backgrounds or ideas can state their preferences in different formats. Multiple preference relations technique is used to combine different assessments. SWOT analysis with multiple preference relations technique with a group decision-making perspective is proposed. This is the first time the method is used in the social media-related literature. With this study, the most appropriate social media strategic factors are selected for ABC and alternative strategies are determined based on the results.

Abstract

Most decision-making problems in construction are complex and difficult to solve, as they involve multiple criteria and multiple decision makers in addition to subjective uncertainties, imprecisions and vagueness surrounding the decision-making process. In many instances, the decision-making process is based on linguistic terms rather than numerical values. Hence, structured fuzzy consensus-reaching processes and fuzzy aggregation methods are instrumental in multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) problems for capturing the point of view of a group of experts. This chapter outlines different fuzzy consensus-reaching processes and fuzzy aggregation methods. It presents the background of the basic theory and formulation of these processes and methods, as well as numerical examples that illustrate their theory and formulation. Application areas of fuzzy consensus reaching and fuzzy aggregation in the construction domain are identified, and an overview of previously developed frameworks for fuzzy consensus reaching and fuzzy aggregation is provided. Finally, areas for future work are presented that highlight emerging trends and the imminent needs of fuzzy consensus reaching and fuzzy aggregation in the construction domain.

A problem of handling fuzzy quantities in a process of knowledge acquisition and deriving an inference mechanism by means of fuzzy relation equations is studied in extensive way. It is clearly pointed out that both of them are closely related and correspond to various types of fuzzy relation equations that are considered. Their relevance to the form of knowledge collected is also indicated. A problem of dimension reduction of a knowledge base is considered as well. Two modes of the use of the knowledge base (goal‐, and data‐driven) are also studied.
