Abstract
Purpose
In recent times, fuzzy logic is gaining more and more attention, and this is because of the capability of understanding the functioning of the system as per human knowledge-based system. The main contribution of the work is dynamically adapting the important parameters throughout the execution of the flower pollination algorithm (FPA) using concepts of fuzzy logic. By adapting the main parameters of the metaheuristics, the performance and accuracy of the metaheuristic have been improving in a varied range of applications.
Design/methodology/approach
The fuzzy logic-based parameter adaptation in the FPA is proposed. In addition, type-2 fuzzy logic is used to design fuzzy inference system for dynamic parameter adaptation in metaheuristics, which can help in eliminating uncertainty and hence offers an attractive improvement in dynamic parameter adaption in metaheuristic method, and, in reality, the effectiveness of the interval type-2 fuzzy inference system (IT2 FIS) has shown to provide improved results as matched to type-1 fuzzy inference system (T1 FIS) in some latest work.
Findings
One case study is considered for testing the proposed approach in a fault tolerant control problem without faults and with partial loss of effectiveness of main actuator fault with abrupt and incipient nature. For comparison between the type-1 fuzzy FPA and interval type-2 fuzzy FPA is presented using statistical analysis which validates the advantages of the interval type-2 fuzzy FPA. The statistical Z-test is presented for comparison of efficiency between two fuzzy variants of the FPA optimization method.
Originality/value
The main contribution of the work is a dynamical adaptation of the important parameters throughout the execution of the flower pollination optimization algorithm using concepts of type-2 fuzzy logic. By adapting the main parameters of the metaheuristics, the performance and accuracy of the metaheuristic have been improving in a varied range of applications.

Abstract
Purpose
Fuzzy-based metaheuristic algorithm is used to optimize the fuzzy controllers for the nonlinear level control system subject to uncertainty specially in the main actuator that has lost effectiveness (LOE). To optimize the fuzzy controller, type-1 harmonic search (HS) and interval type-2 (HS) will be used.
Design/methodology/approach
The type-1 and type-2 fuzzy-based HS algorithms are designed for optimization of fuzzy controllers for Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) applications, and this research proposes a fuzzy-based HS metaheuristic method. The performance of a fuzzy logic-based HS algorithm applied to a nonlinear two-tank level control process with a main actuator that has lost effectiveness (LOE) and also the same controller will be tested on DC motor angular position control with and without noise.
Findings
The key contribution of this work is the discovery of the best approach for generating an optimal vector of values for the fuzzy controller's membership function optimization. This is done in order to improve the controller's performance, bringing the process value of the two-tank level control process closer to the target process value (set point). It is worth noting that the type-1 fuzzy controller that has been optimized is an interval type-2 fuzzy system, which can handle more uncertainty than a type-1 fuzzy system.
Originality/value
The type-1 and type-2 fuzzy-based HS algorithms are designed for optimization of fuzzy controllers for FTC applications, and this research proposes a fuzzy-based HS metaheuristic method. The performance of a fuzzy logic-based HS algorithm applied to a nonlinear two-tank level control process with a main actuator that has LOE will be tested on DC motor angular position control with noise. Two nonlinear uncertain processes are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), a novel socio-politically inspired optimization strategy for proposing a fuzzy variant of this algorithm. ICA is a meta-heuristic algorithm for dealing with different optimization tasks. The basis of the algorithm is inspired by imperialistic competition. It attempts to present the social policy of imperialisms (referred to empires) to control more countries (referred to colonies) and use their sources. If one empire loses its power, among the others making a competition to take possession of it.
Design/methodology/approach
In fuzzy imperialist competitive algorithm (FICA), the colonies have a degree of belonging to their imperialists and the top imperialist, as in fuzzy logic, rather than belonging completely to just one empire therefore the colonies move toward the superior empire and their relevant empires. Simultaneously for balancing the exploration and exploitation abilities of the ICA. The algorithms are used for optimization have shortcoming to deal with accuracy rate and local optimum trap and they need complex tuning procedures. FICA is proposed a way for optimizing convex function with high accuracy and avoiding to trap in local optima rather than using original ICA algorithm by implementing fuzzy logic on it.
Findings
Therefore several solution procedures, including ICA, FICA, genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, tabu search and simulated annealing optimization algorithm are considered. Finally numerical experiments are carried out to evaluate the effectiveness of models as well as solution procedures. Test results present the suitability of the proposed fuzzy ICA for convex functions with little fluctuations.
Originality/value
The proposed evolutionary algorithm, FICA, can be used in diverse areas of optimization problems where convex functions properties are appeared including, industrial planning, resource allocation, scheduling, decision making, pattern recognition and machine learning (optimization techniques; fuzzy logic; convex functions).

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present a control strategy which uses two independent PID controllers to realize the hovering control for unmanned aerial systems (UASs). In addition, the aim of using two PID controller is to achieve the position control and velocity control simultaneously.
Design/methodology/approach
The dynamic of the UASs is mathematically modeled. One PID controller is used for position tracking control, while the other is selected for the vertical component of velocity tracking control. Meanwhile, fuzzy logic algorithm is presented to use the actual horizontal component of velocity to compute the desired position.
Findings
Based on this fuzzy logic algorithm, the control error of the horizontal component of velocity tracking control is narrowed gradually to be zero. The results show that the fuzzy logic algorithm can make the UASs hover still in the air and vertical to the ground.
Social implications
The acquired results are based on simulation not experiment.
Originality/value
This is the first study to use two independent PID controllers to realize stable hovering control for UAS. It is also the first to use the velocity of the UAS to calculate the desired position.

Purpose
This paper aims to discuss a comprehensive survey on fuzzy-based clustering techniques. The determination of an appropriate sensor node as a cluster head straightforwardly affects a network’s lifetime. Clustering often possesses some uncertainties in determining suitable sensor nodes as a cluster head. Owing to various variables, selection of a suitable node as a cluster head is a perplexing decision. Fuzzy logic is capable of handling uncertainties and improving decision-making processes even with insufficient information. Then, state-of-the-art research in the field of clustering techniques has been reviewed.
Design/methodology/approach
The literature is presented in a tabular form with merits and limitations of each technique. Furthermore, the various techniques are compared graphically and classified in a tabular form and the flowcharts of important algorithms are presented with pseudocodes.
Findings
This paper comprehends the importance and distinction of different fuzzy-based clustering methods which are further supportive in designing more efficient clustering protocols.
Originality/value
This paper fulfills the need of a review paper in the field of fuzzy-based clustering techniques because no other paper has reviewed all the fuzzy-based clustering techniques. Furthermore, none of them has presented literature in a tabular form or presented flowcharts with pseudocodes of important techniques.

The set of fuzzy threshold functions is defined to be a fuzzy set over the set of functions. All threshold functions have full memberships in this fuzzy set. Defines and investigates a distance measure between a non‐linearly separable function and the set of all threshold functions. Defines an explicit expression for the membership function of a fuzzy threshold function through the use of this distance measure and finds three upper bounds for this measure. Presents a general method to compute the distance, an algorithm to generate the representation automatically, and a procedure to determine the proper weights and thresholds automatically. Presents the relationships among threshold gate networks, artificial neural networks and fuzzy neural networks. Abstract
Purpose
Software-define vehicular networks (SDVN) assure the direct programmability for controlling the vehicles with improved accuracy and flexibility. In this research, the resource allocation strategy is focused on which the seek-and-destroy algorithm is implemented in the controller in such a way that an effective allocation of the resources is done based on the multi-objective function.
Design/methodology/approach
The purpose of this study is focuses on the resource allocation algorithm for the SDVN with the security analysis to analyse the effect of the attacks in the network. The genuine nodes in the network are granted access to the communication in the network, for which the factors such as trust, throughput, delay and packet delivery ratio are used and the algorithm used is Seek-and-Destroy optimization. Moreover, the optimal resource allocation is done using the same optimization in such a way that the network lifetime is extended.
Findings
The security analysis is undergoing in the research using the simulation of the attackers such as selective forwarding attacks, replay attacks, Sybil attacks and wormhole attacks that reveal that the replay attacks and the Sybil attacks are dangerous attacks and in future, there is a requirement for the security model, which ensures the protection against these attacks such that the network lifetime is extended for a prolonged communication. The achievement of the proposed method in the absence of the attacks is 84.8513% for the remaining nodal energy, 95.0535% for packet delivery ratio (PDR), 279.258 ms for transmission delay and 28.9572 kbps for throughput.
Originality/value
The seek-and-destroy algorithm is one of the swarm intelligence-based optimization designed based on the characteristics of the scroungers and defenders, which is completely novel in the area of optimizations. The diversification and intensification of the algorithm are perfectly balanced, leading to good convergence rates.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on the positive features of the shark smell optimization (SSO) algorithm, the purpose of this paper is to propose a method based on this algorithm, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) model and fuzzy logic to minimize the energy consumption of integrated circuits of internet of things (IoT) nodes and maximize the load-balancing among them.
Design/methodology/approach
Load balancing is a key problem in any distributed environment such as cloud and IoT. It is useful when a few nodes are overloaded, a few are under-loaded and the remainders are idle without interrupting the functioning. As this problem is known as an NP-hard one and SSO is a powerful meta-hybrid method that inspires shark hunting behavior and their skill to detect and feel the smell of the bait even from far away, in this research, this study have provided a new method to solve this problem using the SSO algorithm. Also, the study have synthesized the fuzzy logic to counterbalance the load distribution. Furthermore, DVFS, as a powerful energy management method, is used to reduce the energy consumption of integrated circuits of IoT nodes such as processor and circuit bus by reducing the frequency.
Findings
The outcomes of the simulation have indicated that the proposed method has outperformed the hybrid ant colony optimization – particle swarm optimization and PSO regarding energy consumption. Similarly, it has enhanced the load balance better than the moth flame optimization approach and task execution node assignment algorithm.
Research limitations/implications
There are many aspects and features of IoT load-balancing that are beyond the scope of this paper. Also, given that the environment was considered static, future research can be in a dynamic environment.
Practical implications
The introduced method is useful for improving the performance of IoT-based applications. We can use these systems to jointly and collaboratively check, handle and control the networks in real-time. Also, the platform can be applied to monitor and control various IoT applications in manufacturing environments such as transportation systems, automated work cells, storage systems and logistics.
Originality/value
This study have proposed a novel load balancing technique for decreasing energy consumption using the SSO algorithm and fuzzy logic.

Examines a successful method which has been developed for integrating neural nets and fuzzy logic. Outlines the background of fuzzy logic and neural net design techniques, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. Describes the importance of the error back propagation algorithm in neural net applications and how the difficulties of applying it to a fuzzy logic system were overcome in the NueuroFuzzy Module by using an extended fuzzy logic inference method that employs so‐called fuzzy associative memories [FAMs]. Describes the development steps of NeuroFuzzy systems and gives an example application of such a system to reduce water and energy consumption of washing machines. Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to develop a fuzzy logic-based algorithm to predict the intermetallic compound (IMC) size and mechanical properties of soldering material, Sn96.5-Ag3.0-Cu0.5 (SAC305) alloy, at different levels of temperature. The reliability of solder joint in materials selection is critical in terms of temperature, mechanical properties and environmental aspects. Owing to a wide range of soldering materials available, the selection space finds a fuzzy characteristic.
Design/methodology/approach
The developed algorithm takes thermal aging temperature for SAC305 alloy as input and converts it into fuzzy domain. These fuzzified values are then subjected to a fuzzy rule base, where a set of rules determines the IMC size and mechanical properties, such as yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of SAC305 alloy. The algorithm is successfully simulated for various input thermal aging temperatures. To analyze and validate the developed algorithm, an SAC305 lead (Pb)-free solder alloy is developed and thermally aged at 40, 60 and 100°C temperature.
Findings
The experimental results indicate an average IMCs size of 5.967 (in Pixels), 19.850 N/mm2 YS and 22.740 N/mm2 UTS for SAC305 alloy when thermally aged at an elevated temperature of 140°C. In comparison, the simulation results predicted 5.895 (in Pixels) average IMCs size, 19.875 N/mm2 YS and 22.480 N/mm2 UTS for SAC305 alloy at 140°C thermally aged temperature.
Originality/value
From the experimental and simulated results, it is evident that the fuzzy-based developed algorithm can be used effectively to predict the IMCs size and mechanical properties of SAC305 at various aging temperatures, for the first time.
