Abstract

Purpose

With the development of science and technology, more creators are trying to use new crafts to represent the cultural trends of the social media era, which makes cultural heritage innovative and new genres emerge. This compels the academic community to examine craft from a new perspective. It is very helpful to understand the hidden representational structure of craft more deeply and improve the craft innovation system of cultural and creative products that we deconstruct the craft based on Complex Network and discover its intrinsic connections.

Design/methodology/approach

The research crawled and cleaned the craft information of the top 20% products on the Forbidden City’s cultural and creative products online and then performed Complex Network modeling, constructed three craft representation networks among function, material and technique, quantified and analyzed the inner connections and network structure of the craft elements, and then analyzed the cultural inheritance and innovation embedded in the craft representation networks.

Findings

The three dichotomous craft representation networks constructed by combining function, material and technique: (1) the network density is low and none of them has small-world characteristics, indicating that the innovative heritage of the craft elements in the Forbidden City’s cultural and creative products is at the stage of continuous exploration and development, and multiple coupling innovation is still insufficient; (2) all have scale-free characteristics and there is still a certain degree of community structure within each network, indicating that the coupling innovation of craft elements of the Forbidden City’s cultural and creative products is seriously uneven, with some specific “grammatical combinations” and an Island Effect in the network structure; (3) the craft elements with high network centrality emphasize the characteristics of decorative culture and design for the masses, as well as the pursuit of production efficiency and economic benefits, which represent the aesthetic purport of contemporary Chinese society and the ideological trend of production and life.

Originality/value

The Forbidden City’s cultural and creative products should continue to develop and enrich the multi-coupling innovation of craft elements, clarify and continue their own brand unique craft genes, and make full use of the network important nodes role.

Abstract

Purpose

Additive manufacturing has rapidly developed in terms of technology and its application in various types of industries. With this rapid development, there has been significant research in the area of materials. This has led to the invention of Smart Materials (SMs). The 4D printing is basically 3D printing of these SMs. This paper aims to focus on novel materials and their useful application in various industries using the technology of 4D printing.

Design/methodology/approach

Research studies in 4D printing have increased since the time when this idea was first introduced in the year 2013. The present research study will deeply focus on the introduction to 4D printing, types of SMs and its application based on the various types of stimulus. The application of each type of SM has been explained along with its functioning with respect to the stimulus.

Findings

SMs have multiple functional applications pertaining to appropriate industries. The 4D printed parts have a distinctive capability to change its shape and self-assembly to carry out a specific function according to the requirement. Afterward, the fabricated part can recover to its 3D printed “memorized” shape once it is triggered by the stimulus.

Originality/value

The present study highlights the various capabilities of SMs, which is used as a raw material in 4D printing.

Abstract

Well‐documented corporate demands for crossfunctionally competent employees have instigated a wide variety of efforts by the educational community to integrate business curricula. Many colleges and universities struggle to functionally integrate business programs that historically have been delivered by well‐defined, and often well‐siloed, disciplines. Drawing from the numerous published and unpublished case studies of cross‐functional integration attempts, this study develops a framework of critical issues to consider when developing an integrated program. The framework develops five major categories of issues (strategic, leadership, administrative, faculty, and student) to help universities identify typical program decisions and potential roadblocks that may inhibit the development of a successful program.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to provide contemporary scientific knowledge on the functionality of edible lipids, sources, health benefits, and a special emphasis on different encapsulation strategies to enhance their dietary application and boost the market value.

Design/methodology/approach

Novel technologies overcoming these issues are in great demand. Given that, several novel encapsulation techniques have been established aiming at most of the aspects of functional lipids. In addition, these techniques have been designed to enhance the storage stability and controlled release of lipids in food systems.

Findings

Plant and marine oils are one of the richest sources of functional lipids but are attached with limitations. Currently, alternative sources, such as different types of algae and microorganisms are gaining attention in terms of sustainable production systems. Advances in various encapsulation techniques have helped to overcome the dispersibility and stability problems of lipids encapsulation. Refinement in physicochemical interaction, colloidal dispersion and core-shell modules between wall and core matrix protect dietary lipids during processing have been implemented. Liposomes, micro/nanoemulsions and micro/nanocapsules are found most suitable for food application by improving the fatty acid profile, stability and sensorial properties.

Originality/value

Functional lipids offer numerous health benefits (i.e., simple health-promoting properties to complex disease preventive and curative effects). However, these functional lipids are associated with several disadvantages, such as region-specific availability, vulnerability to oxidation depending on the level of unsaturation, degradation/hydrolysis on processing, low bioavailability, confined storage stability, and others.

Abstract

This paper reports on a fabrication platform and extensions to deposition‐based processes that permit freeform fabrication of three‐dimensional functional assemblies with embedded conductive wiring and power sources. Structure and joints are produced by fused deposition of thermoplastics and deposition of elastomers. Conductive wiring is achieved by deposition of various low‐melting‐point alloys and conductive pastes. Batteries based on zinc‐air chemistry are produced by the deposition of zinc, electrolyte, and catalysts, with separator media and electrodes. Details of the deposition processes are provided and several printed assemblies are demonstrated.

Abstract

Contrary to its conspicuous achievement as an industrial society, Japan has been experiencing long lasting economic stagnation due to a paradigm shift toward an information society that emerged in the 1990s. This contraction can be attributed to the shift from a growth‐oriented trajectory in an industrial society to a functionality‐oriented trajectory in an information society. However, a noteworthy surge in new innovation in Japan has been observed in recent years in the leading edge innovation challenge in the Japanese manufacturing industry. This trend can largely be attributed to effective assimilation of cross‐functional spillover in an indigenous growth‐oriented trajectory. Thus, elucidation of the inside of the black box of cross‐functional spillover has become a crucially important issue for Japan’s shift to a functionality‐oriented trajectory. Constructive suggestions for this elucidation can be observed in the shifting dynamism from structural‐materials to functionalmaterials in the area of certain fine ceramics. This dynamism is based on effective assmilation of cross‐functional spillover and can provide a significant insight for the foregoing elucidation. Prompted by this postulate, this paper attempts to analyze spillover dynamism in fine ceramics and to extract constructive suggestions suggestive to Japan’s shift from a growth‐oriented trajectory to a functionality‐oriented trajectory.

Abstract

Purpose

The increasing interest in engineering structures made from multiple materials has led to corresponding interest in technologies, which can fabricate multi‐material parts. The purpose of this paper is to further explore of the multi‐material fabrication capabilities of ultrasonic consolidation (UC).

Design/methodology/approach

Various combinations of materials including titanium, silver, tantalum, aluminum, molybdenum, stainless steel, nickel, copper, and MetPreg® were ultrasonically consolidated. Some of the materials were found to be effective as an intermediate layer between difficult to join materials. Elemental boron particles were added in situ between selected materials to modify the bonding characteristics. Microstructures of deposits were studied to evaluate bond quality.

Findings

Results show evidence of good bonding between many combinations of materials, thus illustrating increasing potential for multi‐material fabrication using UC.

Originality/value

Multi‐material fabrication capabilities using UC and other additive manufacturing processes is a critical step towards the realization of engineering designs which make use of functional material combinations and optimization.

Abstract

Many firms operating in the international marketplace are hampered by their organisational structures; that is, their structures and managerial practices do not match the requirements imposed by multinational operations. International operations require an organisational structure that can respond to the unique needs of the international environment and fully exploit business opportunities. Issues are focused on which arise when a firm implements a materials management organisational structure to sustain international operations and to exploit opportunities for sourcing abroad. The discussion examines the structural and environmental issues that must be considered in designing an effective organisation.
