Abstract

This paper introduces a new mathematical model for analyzing the economic benefits of incorporating the fourth party logistics (4PL), which is a contractor (i.e. agent) for the supply chain coordination and construction based on the division of community and the outsourcing development. Based on the physical theory and the wave-particle duality, a supply chain is the special organization whose characteristic has wave-particle duality. The mathematical model enriches the connotation of 4PL and it broadens the thought for 4PL development. Secondly, the proposed mathematical model predicated on transaction costs, is supported by Transaction Cost Theory (TCT) and acts as the theoretical analysis tool of 4PL for coordinating 3-party generic supply chain. Through the model, some trendy conclusions can be drawn to provide theoretical support for 4PL’s practices. Finally, a case illustrates our conclusions.

Abstract

Tonya and Anete are new players at sc’MOI, but this theme emerges at the tail end of sc’MOI so they are best to explicate it. This chapter describes the theoretical contributions of quantum storytelling theory (QST) and practice. Building on the application of complexity theory in the hard sciences as well as social contexts and theory on multimodal constituency, this chapter considers the areas of overlap and difference between quantum storytelling and its theoretical fellows, with special attention given to sociomateriality, storytelling, feminism, fractal, and complexity theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to propose a fractal model of thermal contact conductance (TCC) of two spherical joint surfaces, considering friction coefficient based on the three-dimensional fractal theory.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of friction coefficient, fractal parameters, radius of curvature and contact type on TCC were analyzed using numerical simulation.

Findings

The results indicate that the TCC decreases with the increase of friction coefficient and fractal roughness and increases with the increase of fractal dimension and radius of curvature; the contact type of two spherical joint surfaces has an important influence on the TCC, and the TCC of external contact is smaller than that of internal contact under the same contact load.

Originality/value

A fractal model of TCC of two spherical joint surfaces considering friction coefficient is proposed in this paper. Achievements of this work provide some theoretical basis for the research of TCC of bearings and other curved surfaces.

Abstract

This chapter describes the theoretical contributions of Fractal Change Management (FCM) in relation to Quantum Storytelling theory and practice. Building on the application of complexity theory in the hard sciences as well as social contexts, this chapter considers the areas of overlap and difference between FCM and its theoretical fellows, summarizing selected concepts from FCM, considering the strengths and weaknesses of the method in various contexts, as well as its development over time. Prior studies in the yoga and nonprofit communities are briefly discussed along with ongoing work with software developers. Areas for further study are examined in detail, as a way to establish an antenarrative for this line of inquiry that honors its lineage as well as its contributions to the body of knowledge.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a distributed model of structuration of information technology (IT) in organizations to complement the collective that dominates the application of structuration theory to organizational phenomenon.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper draws on secondary qualitative data to specify how differences among people's practices with and around IT determine the effect of IT in organizations.

Findings

The paper provides an analytical framework to extend the structuration theory of IT in organizations that can also explain differences among people's use of IT and track their consequences for the effect of IT in organizations.

Research limitations/implications

This paper extends the theory of the structuration of IT so that it can take into account the effect of the different ways in which people use IT at work.

Practical implications

This paper underscores the increase adaptability that managers can build during IT implementation by taking advantage of the differences among people's appropriation of IT, instead of attempting to make people use IT in similar ways.

Originality/value

The paper introduces the role of variation among people's practices into research on the structuration of IT on organizations. This research, which is one of the dominant approaches to the effect of IT in organizations, assumes that people share the same practices with and around IT and is ill suited to explain the consequences of variation among people's use of IT at work.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a general mathematic approach to model the microstructures of porous structures produced by additive manufacturing (AM), which will result in fractal surface topography and higher roughness that have greater influence on the performance of porous structures.

Design/methodology/approach

The overall shapes of pores were modeled by triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS), and the micro-roughness details attached to the overall pore shapes were represented by Weierstrass–Mandelbrot (W-M) fractal representation, which was integrated with TPMS along its normal vectors. An index roughly reflecting the irregularity of fractal TPMS was proposed, based on which the influence of the fractal parameters on the fractal TPMS was qualitatively analyzed. Two complex samples of real porous structures were given to demonstrate the feasibility of the model.

Findings

The fractal surface topography should not be neglected at a micro-scale level. In addition, a decrease in the fractal dimension Ds may exponentially make the topography rougher; an increase in the height-scaling parameter G may linearly increase the roughness; and the number of the superposed ridges has no distinct influence on the topography. Furthermore, the synthesis method is general for all implicit surfaces.

Practical implications

The method provides an alternative way to shift the posteriori design paradigm of porous media to priori design mode through numeric simulation. Therefore, the optimization of AM process parameters, as well as the porous structure, can be potentially realized according to specific functional requirement.

Originality/value

The synthesis of TPMS and W-M fractal geometry was accomplished efficiently and was general for all implicit freeform surfaces, and the influence of the fractal parameters on the fractal TPMS was analyzed more systematically.

Abstract

Purpose

The classical advection-dispersion equation (ADE) model cannot accurately depict the gas transport process in natural geological formations. This paper aims to study the behavior of CO2 transport in fractal porous media by using an effective Hausdorff fractal derivative advection-dispersion equation (HFDADE) model.

Design/methodology/approach

Anomalous dispersion behaviors of CO2 transport are effectively characterized by the investigation of time and space Hausdorff derivatives on non-Euclidean fractal metrics. The numerical simulation has been performed with different Hausdorff fractal dimensions to reveal characteristics of the developed fractal ADE in fractal porous media. Numerical experiments focus on the influence of the time and space fractal dimensions on flow velocity and dispersion coefficient.

Findings

The physical mechanisms of parameters in the Hausdorff fractal derivative model are analyzed clearly. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed model can well fit the history of gas production data and it can be a powerful technique for depicting the early arrival and long-tailed phenomenon by incorporating a fractal dimension.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, first time these results are presented.

Abstract

Aerosols play an important role in the radiative balance of the atmosphere. While sulphate aerosols are recognized as the dominant contributor of tropospheric aerosols over and near industrialized regions, smoke aerosols containing soot or elemental carbon are regarded with increasing importance on a global basis. The fate of carbonaceous aerosols is at present poorly understood as a result of various atmospheric processes. This paper examines the effect of morphology on the physical and chemical properties of atmospheric aerosols, in the context of fractal theory. The use of a fractal dimension to describe aggregate morphology enables more accurate modelling of sedimentation and optical characteristics.

Abstract

Purpose

The fractal and fractional calculus have obtained considerable attention in the electrical and electronic engineering since they can model many complex phenomena that the traditional integer-order calculus cannot. The purpose of this paper is to develop a new fractional pulse narrowing nonlinear transmission lines model within the local fractional calculus for the first time and derive a novel method, namely, the direct mapping method, to seek for the nondifferentiable (ND) exact solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

By defining some special functions via the Mittag–Leffler function on the Cantor sets, a novel approach, namely, the direct mapping method is derived via constructing a group of the nonlinear local fractional ordinary differential equations. With the aid of the direct mapping method, four groups of the ND exact solutions are obtained in just one step. The dynamic behaviors of the ND exact solutions on the Cantor sets are also described through the 3D graphical illustration.

Findings

It is found that the proposed method is simple but effective and can construct four sets of the ND exact solutions in just one step. In addition, one of the ND exact solutions becomes the exact solution of the classic pulse narrowing nonlinear transmission lines model for the special case 9 = 1, which strongly proves the correctness and effectiveness of the method. The ideas in the paper can be used to study the other fractal partial differential equations (PDEs) within the local fractional derivative (LFD) arising in electrical and electronic engineering.

Originality/value

The fractional pulse narrowing nonlinear transmission lines model within the LFD is proposed for the first time in this paper. The proposed method in the work can be used to study the other fractal PDEs arising in electrical and electronic engineering. The findings in this work are expected to shed a light on the study of the fractal PDEs arising in electrical and electronic engineering.
