This article aims to increase the understanding of the role of individual actors and arenas in dealing with multiple institutional logics in family firms.

This study follows a case-study approach of two family-owned newspaper companies. Based on interviews and secondary sources, the empirical material was analysed focussing on three institutional logics, that is, family logic, management logic and journalistic logic.

First, the authors show how and in which arenas competing logics are balanced in family-owned newspaper companies. Second, the authors highlight that family owners are central actors in the process of balancing different institutional logics. Further, they analyse how family members can become hybrid owner-managers, meaning that they have access to all institutional logics and become central actors in the balancing process.

The authors reveal how multiple institutional logics are balanced in family firms by including formal actors and arenas as additional lenses. Therefore, owning family members, especially hybrid owner-managers, are the best-suited individual actors to balance competing logics. Hybrid owner-managers are members of the owner families who are also skilled in one or several professions.

Enterprising projects require a mixture of the imaginative and rational, not the rejection of one in favour of the other. Where a clear distinction is made, the imaginative and rational may support different doctrines on how knowledge and understanding should be acquired. Where attempts are made to draw on both as analytic and creative resources, e.g. as in the qualitative treatment of new social data, researchers may have the task of developing a complementary approach to social enquiry which combines objectivity with intuition and detachment with feelings of rapport. The data obtained often require an advocacy approach to argument, one where a persuasive line of argument is designed to establish the relative strength of a case in what may well be an adversarial context of claims and counter‐claims. Where research deals with various kinds of evidence, e.g. objective and subjective, research methods must be argued as compatible with a research problem and its context, and not dictated arbitrarily by research doctrine. An example is given of what is claimed to be a rational, linear approach to developing the internal logic of a research report; the claim is discussed that rationality and imagination may be complementary in speculative research; and an advocacy approach to presenting a research case is discussed.

Content analysis, restricted within the limits of written textual documents (wtdca), is a field which is greatly in need of extensive interdisciplinary research. This would clarify certain concepts, especially those concerned with ‘text’, as a new central nucleus of semiotic research, and ‘content’, or the informative power of text. The objective reality (syntax) of the written document should be, in the cognitive process that all content analysis entails, interpreted (semantically and pragmatically) in an intersubjective manner with regard to the context, the analyst's knowledge base and the documentary objectives. The contributions of semiolinguistics (textual), logic (formal) and psychology (cognitive) are fundamental to the conduct of these activities. The criteria used to validate the results obtained complete the necessary conceptual reference panorama.

This paper reviews existing business process (BP) modeling languages that are widely used in the industry as well as recent research work on modeling and analysis of BPs in the service-oriented environment and Internetware-based software paradigm. BPs in such environment are different from traditional BPs due to loose coupling of partner services, dynamic and on-the-fly selection of partners and run-time process adaptability. The unique characteristics of these BPs require formal modeling of the requirements and constraints in each phase of their life cycle, including design phase, implementation and deployment phase and execution phase.

The paper first provides a categorization of typical user requirements in each phase of the BP life cycle. Then a detailed comparison of the selected languages with respect to their requirement modeling and analysis capabilities in each of the identified categories is provided. The paper also discusses new requirements engineering research challenges arising from future software needs and emerging trends in software engineering in the context of Web-services-based BPs and Internetware.

There is a need to have a framework that provides support for user requirements modeling and analysis for all the phases of BP life cycle in an integrated manner. Such a framework would be useful not only in resolving the inconsistencies between requirements across phases but also in addressing the issues related to BP evolution due to changes in user requirements over time. Moreover, with the Internet of things (IoT) adoption in BPM, there is a need to have an integrated environment that provides support for capturing the resilience requirements of enterprise BPs as well as the mobility constraints of the underlying IoT devices.
