Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present gait analysis for five different terrains: level ground, ramp ascent, ramp descent, stair ascent and stair descent.

Design/methodology/approach

Gait analysis has been carried out using a combination of the following sensors: force-sensitive resistor (FSR) sensors fabricated in foot insole to sense foot pressure, a gyroscopic sensor to detect the angular velocity of the shank and MyoWare electromyographic muscle sensors to detect muscle’s activities. All these sensors were integrated around the Arduino nano controller board for signal acquisition and conditioning purposes. In the present scheme, the muscle activities were obtained from the tibialis anterior and medial gastrocnemius muscles using electromyography (EMG) electrodes, and the acquired EMG signals were correlated with the simultaneously attained signals from the FSR and gyroscope sensors. The nRF24L01+ transceivers were used to transfer the acquired data wirelessly to the computer for further analysis. For the acquisition of sensor data, a Python-based graphical user interface has been designed to analyze and display the processed data. In the present paper, the authors got motivated to design and develop a reliable real-time gait phase detection technique that can be used later in designing a control scheme for the powered ankle-foot prosthesis.

Findings

The effectiveness of the gait phase detection was obtained in an open environment. Both off-line and real-time gait events and gait phase detections were accomplished for the FSR and gyroscopic sensors. Both sensors showed their usefulness for detecting the gait events in real-time, i.e. within 10 ms. The heuristic rules and a zero-crossing based-algorithm for the shank angular rate correctly identified all the gait events for the locomotion in all five terrains.

Practical implications

This study leads to an understanding of human gait analysis for different types of terrains. A real-time standalone system has been designed and realized, which may find application in the design and development of ankle-foot prosthesis having real-time control feature for the above five terrains.

Originality/value

The noise-free data from three sensors were collected in the same time frame from both legs using a wireless sensor network between two transmitters and a single receiver. Unlike the data collection using a treadmill in a laboratory environment, this setup is useful for gait analysis in an open environment for different terrains.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study is to investigate an appropriate breast prosthesis of pattern with center of gravity that exerts less clothing pressure on women who are breast cancer patients.

Design/methodology/approach

From November 2018, clothing pressure was measured with silk fabric breast prosthesis (SBP) of three different patterns above an affected breast (AB) by the force-sensitive resistance (FSR) sensor.

Findings

When wearing SBP above the AB, clothing pressure was significantly different in the healthy breast (HB) and the AB; the highest clothing pressure was at the center of nipple in the AB. Meanwhile, the top of the nipple area in the HB experienced higher clothing pressure than before wearing it. Because wearing heavy breast prosthesis presses down, influencing the HB as well. However, below the bottom of the breast bra curve in the AB, clothing pressure becomes lower than before wearing it. Because when the breast prosthesis was inserted into the bra, the clothing pressure not only increased generally but also the clothing pressure divided at some areas. Also, when comparing three different patterns of SBP, the result indicated a significant difference in clothing pressure only inside of breast cap and the center of gravity of the lower breast prosthesis has the lowest clothing pressure.

Research limitations/implications

A comparison in pressure based on a circuit design (FSR sensors) and an air pack (AP) device was presented. Further work will be focused on the generation of pressure clothing for breast cancer patients.

Originality/value

The paper demonstrates that wearing breast prosthesis with a center of gravity in the lower position from the nipple area has less effect on breast cancer women. The results of this paper facilitate the pattern design of clothing for patients.

Abstract

Purpose

Fall detection is a primary necessity for elderly people with medically tested nervous problems. This paper aims important to detect fall and prevent fatal injuries and untreated attention for long hours.

Design/methodology/approach

The project is focused on developing a smart shoe with force-sensitive resistors placed at plantar pressure points to detect fall. This could draw immediate medical attention to the patient. The device is developed using sensors, microcontroller and accelerometer integrated into a compact module. A rule-based detection algorithm helps in transmitting the alert to an Internet of Things device when a fall is detected.

Findings

Based on the pressure applied, there is a change in resistive value of force sensitivity resistor. When it reaches the threshold value, fall gets detected and alert gets triggered through telegram bot with latitude and longitude details of the location.

Originality/value

The challenge in developing this device is to make it wearable reducing the overall hardware complexity. The entire module placed inside the sole of the shoe avoids inconvenience to the patients.

Abstract

Purpose

Plantar force is the interface pressure existing between the foot plantar surface and the shoe sole during static or dynamic gait. Plantar force derived from gait and posture plays a critical role for rehabilitation, footwear design, clinical diagnostics and sports activities, and so on. This paper aims to review plantar force measurement technologies based on piezoelectric materials, which can make the reader understand preliminary works systematically and provide convenience for researchers to further study.

Design/methodology/approach

The review introduces working principle of piezoelectric sensor, structures and hardware design of plantar force measurement systems based on piezoelectric materials. The structures of sensors in plantar force measurement systems can be divided into four kinds, including monolayered sensor, multilayered sensor, tri-axial sensor and other sensor. The previous studies about plantar force measurement system based on piezoelectric technology are reviewed in detail, and their characteristics and performances are compared.

Findings

A good deal of measurement technologies have been studied by researchers to detect and analyze the plantar force. Among these measurement technologies, taking advantage of easy fabrication and high sensitivity, piezoelectric sensor is an ideal candidate sensing element. However, the number and arrangement of the sensors will influence the characteristics and performances of plantar force measurement systems. Therefore, it is necessary to further study plantar force measurement system for better performances.

Originality/value

So far, many plantar force measurement systems have been proposed, and several reviews already introduced plantar force measurement systems in the aspect of types of pressure sensors, experimental setups for foot pressure measurement analysis and the technologies used in plantar shear stress measurements. However, this paper reviews plantar force measurement systems based on piezoelectric materials. The structures of piezoelectric sensors in the measurement systems are discussed. Hardware design applied to measurement system is summarized. Moreover, the main point of further study is presented in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to discuss the design, fabrication, communication, testing, and simulation of a new tactile probe called Elastirob used to measure the modulus of elasticity of biological soft tissues and soft materials.

Design/methodology/approach

Both finite element modeling and experimental approaches were used in this analysis. Elastirob, with the ability to apply different rates of strain on testing specimens, is accompanied by a tactile display called TacPlay. This display is a custom‐designed user‐friendly interface and is able to evaluate the elasticity in each part of the stress‐strain curve.

Findings

A new device is being constructed that can measure the modulus of elasticity of a sensed object. The results of Elastirob applied on two specimens are reported and compared by the results of experiments obtained by an industrial testing machine. Acceptable validations of Elastirob were achieved from the comparisons.

Research limitations/implications

The designed system can be miniaturized to be used in minimally invasive surgeries in the future.

Practical implications

Elastirob determines the elasticity by drawing the stress‐strain curve and then calculating its slope. The combination of the force sensing resistor, microcontroller and stepper motor provides Elastirob with the ability to apply different rates of strain on testing specimens.

Originality/value

It can be employed in both in vivo and in vitro tests for measuring stiffness of touch objects. For the first time, a device has been designed and tested which is a few orders of magnitude smaller than its industrial counterparts and has considerably lower weight.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to design and analyze a controlled magnetorheological damper-based ankle-foot prosthesis prototype.

Design/methodology/approach

The ankle-foot prostheses prototype is proposed using the lightweight three dimensional (3 D)-printed parts, MR damper and digital servomotor. Initially, the computer-aided design (CAD) model of the prosthetic foot, leaf spring, retention spring and the various connecting parts required to connect the pylon and damper actuator assemblies are designed using CAD software. Later, the fused deposition modeling 3 D printer-based technique prints a prosthetic foot and other connecting parts using Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene filament. The prototype consists of two control parts: the first part controls the MR actuator that absorbs the impacts during walking. The second part is the control of the electric actuator intended to generate the dorsiflexion and plantar flexion movements. Finally, the prototype is tested on a transtibial amputee under the supervision of a prosthetist.

Findings

The ANalysis SYStems software-based analysis has shown that the prosthetic foot has a factor of safety values between 4.7 and 8.7 for heel strike, mid-swing and toe-off; hence, it is safe from mechanical failure. The designed MR damper-based ankle-foot prosthesis prototype is tested on an amputee for a level-ground walk; he felt comfortable compared to his passive prosthesis.

Originality/value

The design of an MR damper-based prosthesis prototype offers a better dynamic range for locomotion than passive prostheses. It reduces the injuries and provides relief to the transtibial amputees.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a novel force sensing jig for robot-assisted drilling used to drill holes for the fastening of floating nut plates in aircraft assembly.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes the drill jig, which consists of a parallel gripper, peg-in-hole pins and a back-plate with a recess where a Polydimethylsiloxane cone is placed on top of a force sensor. As the jig approaches the part, the force sensor registers the applied force until it reaches steady state, which indicates full contact between the jig and the part. The peg-in-hole pins then lock into a pre-existing hole, which provides a mechanical reference, and the support plate provides back support during drilling.

Findings

Positional accuracy and the repeatability of the system were successfully placed within the specification for accuracy and repeatability (0.1 mm tolerance and 0.2 mm tolerance, respectively).

Practical implications

The drill jig can be integrated into existing robot drilling solutions and modified for specific applications. The integration of the force sensor provides data for engineers to monitor and analyze forces during drilling. The design of the force sensing drill jig is particularly suited to industrial prototype robot drilling end-effectors for small and medium manufacturers.

Originality/value

The key novelties of this drilling jig are in the compact assembly, modular design and inclusion of force sensing and back support features.

Abstract

Purpose

When designing hardware and algorithms for robotic manipulation and grasping, sensory information is typically needed to control the grasping process. This paper presents an overview of the major grasping and manipulation approaches and the more common hardware used to obtain the necessary sensory information.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents an overview of tactile sensing in intelligent robotic manipulation. The history, the common issues, and applications are reviewed. Sensor performance is briefly discussed and compared to the human tactile sense. Advantages and disadvantages of the most common sensor approaches are discussed. Some examples are given of sensors that are widely available as of today. Eventually, some examples of the state‐of‐the‐art in tactile sensing application are presented.

Findings

Although many sensor technologies and strong theoretical models have been developed, there is still much left to be done in intelligent grasping and manipulation. This is partly due to the youth of the field and the complex nature of safe control in uncertain environments. Even though there are impressive results when it comes to specific examples of advanced manipulation, there seems to be room for great improvements of hardware and especially algorithms when it comes to more generic everyday domestic tasks.

Originality/value

This paper presents a review of sensor hardware while also giving a glimpse of the major topics in grasping and manipulation. While better hardware of course is desirable, the major challenges seem to lie in the development and application of grasping and manipulation algorithms.

Abstract

Purpose

The construction industry remains one of the most hazardous industries worldwide, with a higher number of fatalities and injuries each year. The safety and well-being of workers at a job site are paramount as they face both immediate and long-term risks such as falls and musculoskeletal disorders. To mitigate these dangers, sensor-based technologies have emerged as a crucial tool to promote the safety and well-being of workers on site. The implementation of real-time sensor data-driven monitoring tools can greatly benefit the construction industry by enabling the early identification and prevention of potential construction accidents. This study aims to explore the innovative method of prototype development regarding a safety monitoring system in the form of smart personal protective equipment (PPE) by taking advantage of the recent advances in wearable technology and cloud computing.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed smart construction safety system has been meticulously crafted to seamlessly integrate with conventional safety gear, such as gloves and vests, to continuously monitor construction sites for potential hazards. This state-of-the-art system is primarily geared towards mitigating musculoskeletal disorders and preventing workers from inadvertently entering high-risk zones where falls or exposure to extreme temperatures could occur. The wearables were introduced through the proposed system in a non-intrusive manner where the safety vest and gloves were chosen as the base for the PPE as almost every construction worker would be required to wear them on site. Sensors were integrated into the PPE, and a smartphone application which is called SOTER was developed to view and interact with collected data. This study discusses the method and process of smart PPE system design and development process in software and hardware aspects.

Findings

This research study posits a smart system for PPE that utilises real-time sensor data collection to improve worksite safety and promote worker well-being. The study outlines the development process of a prototype that records crucial real-time data such as worker location, altitude, temperature and hand pressure while handling various construction objects. The collected data are automatically uploaded to a cloud service, allowing supervisors to monitor it through a user-friendly smartphone application. The worker tracking ability with the smart PPE can help to alleviate the identified issues by functioning as an active warning system to the construction safety management team. It is steadily evident that the proposed smart PPE system can be utilised by the respective industry practitioners to ensure the workers' safety and well-being at construction sites through monitoring of the workers with real-time sensor data.

Originality/value

The proposed smart PPE system assists in reducing the safety risks posed by hazardous environments as well as preventing a certain degree of musculoskeletal problems for workers. Ultimately, the current study unveils that the construction industry can utilise cloud computing services in conjunction with smart PPE to take advantage of the recent advances in novel technological avenues and bring construction safety management to a new level. The study significantly contributes to the prevailing knowledge of construction safety management in terms of applying sensor-based technologies in upskilling construction workers' safety in terms of real-time safety monitoring and safety knowledge sharing.
