Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to attempt to identify the attributes that women look for in their financial advisor and to examine if the choice of attributes of a financial advisor among women investors in Punjab is the same across demographics. The understanding of the attributes that women want in their financial advisor will help the financial advisors to be mindful of the opportunities and the challenges they have to face while working with women investors. Studying the impact of demographics on the choice of the investment advisor would enable the service providers to provide women with services relevant to their unique and individual situations.

Design/methodology/approach

A pre-tested, well-structured questionnaire was constructed and administered personally, and the responses of 200 women investors were analyzed. The sum of the ranks assigned by women to various attributes determining the choice of a financial advisor was used to find out the most preferred attribute on the basis of which women choose their financial advisor. The Kruskal Wallis test was used to analyze the impact of demographics on the choice of the respondents.

Findings

The results of the study brought out that the friendliness of the financial advisor, and the quality of advice provided by them are preferred attributes determining the choice of a financial advisor. Along with this, the results also state that the preference for the attribute friendliness and quality of advice is not the same across age groups. The choice of attributes also varies according to the marital status of the respondents.

Practical implications

The current study will contribute toward a greater understanding of the attributes which are considered important by women while choosing their financial advisor. The study will help the financial advisors to cater to the needs of their women clients. Moreover, the study will also benefit women by bringing about a positive change in the attitude of the financial advisors in favor of them. The greater sensitization of the financial advisors toward their women clients would lead to greater stock market participation among women, thereby benefitting the society.

Originality/value

The paper is an attempt to identify the attributes that women look for in their financial advisor and to examine if the choice of attributes of a financial advisor among women investors in Punjab is the same across demographics or not. Therefore, the study contributes to the understanding of the investment behavior of women.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify a taxonomy of financial ratios derived from financial statements prepared using International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). The work first empirically establishes and then statistically validates the taxonomy of financial attributes captured in financial ratios. In 2005, the European Commission required that publicly traded companies in the European Union use IFRS as the basis for financial reporting. In the same year, Australia adopted IFRS as a basis for financial reporting. Since then, 120 countries and reporting jurisdictions have adopted IFRS as the basis for financial reporting. Given that IFRS predominate in the financial reporting world, it seems essential to establish and validate IFRS-based ratio attributes. Only then can reliance upon and comparability of these ratios be warranted (Altman and Eisenbeis, 1978). Using principle component analysis, the authors empirically identify nine stable attributes (factors) for ratios drawn from IFRS-based financial statements from 84 counties. The findings provides an empirical basis to formulate testable hypotheses regarding the predictive and descriptive utility of financial ratios draw from IFRS-based financial statements.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper begins with a broad category of IFRS-based financial ratios, 50, found in practice and research, including income statement, balance sheet, cash flow, profitability and liquidity measures. Then, a sample of companies from the manufacturing sector is segmented using IFRS as a basis of financial statement reporting. Next, principal component analysis, a method of factor analysis, is applied to empirically identify factors and financial attributes captured in financial ratios used in research inquiry and financial analysis.

Findings

The authors find that the financial attributes captured by IFRS-based ratios go well beyond the traditional measures of profitability, liquidity and solvency. The authors identify nine factors that are interpretable and stable over the period, 2011-2015: asset relationship, asset turnover, capital structure, expense insight, fixed asset usage, inventory turnover, liquidity, profitability margin and performance return. Interestingly, the authors did not find a separate cash flow factor. Most importantly, the results corroborate that IFRS-based ratios are consistent and comparable, despite innate country differences that have been shown to influence the application, interpretation and use of IFRS.

Research limitations/implications

The efforts are limited to the manufacturing sector. The financial attributes may be different in service, distribution and retail sectors. Also, limiting the effort are the ratios selected in this study. A broader range of ratios may widen the identification of unique stable factors over time.

Practical implications

The findings provide a basis for research and analysis efforts regarding the validity, comparability and stability of IFRS-based financial ratios. Most importantly, the results corroborate that IFRS-based ratios are consistent and comparable, despite innate country differences that have been shown to influence the application, interpretation and use of IFRS. The findings should be of interest to international and national financial reporting standard setters, investors and analysts.

Originality/value

An empirically evidenced classification system for IFRS-based financial ratios has yet to be determined based on a financial statements across a wide breadth of countries and reporting jurisdictions. Identification of stable interpretable factors, financial attributes, has been limited. The first is that inquiry has been limited to domestic-based, such as US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, financial ratios. The second is inquiry has been limited to IFRS-based financial ratios within a specific country.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop and empirically test a model examining the relationship between customer perceptions (product attributes, benefits, customer satisfaction, trust, commitment and customer behavioral loyalty) and financial performance of a merchant bank.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the SEM tool of Linear Structure Relation (LISREL), this study develops and empirically tests a model examining the relationships between customer perspectives (product attributes, benefits, customer satisfaction, trust, commitment and customer behavioral loyalty) and the financial perspective (financial performance). A cross‐department study in the financial services industry was conducted based on three consumer samples (department of Loans, Deposits, and Credit Cards) drawn from XYZ bank, one of the most famous banks providing merchant banking services in Taiwan.

Findings

SEM results indicate that: customer perceptions positively affect financial performance; and customers purchase financial services with dissimilar benefits, all of which come with corresponding attributes, and hence result in different levels of customer satisfaction and behavioral sequence, which is important in reinforcing customers' trust, commitment, repurchase intentions and corporate financial performance.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that financial service managers could consider treating consumers as partners in their provision of existing services or their quest to develop successful new services. Reciprocal behavior will foster a positive atmosphere, remove barriers arising from risk, and enable relationships to progress, ultimately improving financial performance.

Originality/value

The research proposes an empirical model of the customer perceptions in the consumption of financial services that has a positive impact on the financial performance of the company. The findings are based on data from one company across three product departments.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce and illustrate how discrete choice experiments (DCEs) can be used by accounting researchers and present an agenda of accounting-related research topics that might usefully benefit from the adoption of DCEs.

Design/methodology/approach

Each major phase involved in conducting a DCE is illustrated using a capital budgeting case study. The research agenda is based on a review of experimental research in financial accounting, management accounting and auditing.

Findings

DCEs can overcome some of the problems associated with asking decision-makers to rank or rate alternatives. Instead, they ask decision-makers to choose an alternative from a set. DCEs arguably better reflect the realities of real-world decision-making because decision-makers need to make trade-offs between all of the alternatives relevant to a decision. An important advantage that DCEs offer is their ability to calculate willingness-to-pay estimates, which can enable the valuation of non-market goods. Several streams of experimental accounting research would appear well-suited to investigation with DCEs.

Research limitations/implications

While every effort has been made to ensure that this illustration is as generic to as the many potential studies as possible, it may be that researchers seeking to utilise a DCE need to refer to additional literary sources. This study, however, should serve as a useful starting point.

Practical implications

Accounting researchers are expected to benefit from reading this article by being: made aware of the DCE method and its advantages; shown how to conduct a DCE; and provided with an agenda of accounting-related research topics that might usefully benefit from application of the DCE methodology.

Originality/value

It is the authors’ understanding that this is the first article directed to accounting academics regarding the conduct of DCEs for accounting research. It is hoped that this study can provide a useful platform for accounting academics to launch further research adopting DCEs.

The purpose of this paper is to determine which financial record‐keeping system farmers use, as well as what system attributes farmers value and to what degree.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses a choice experiment to examine farmer's demand for attributes of financial record‐keeping systems. A sample from the general Michigan farm population is compared to samples from university and agribusiness record system clients.

Findings

Results reveal that university and agribusiness clients are willing to pay considerably more for a farm‐specific record system to backstop their farm management decisions.

Practical implications

The results provide an understanding of farmer demands for farm financial record systems and can be used to position record‐keeping systems to meet those demands.

Originality/value

This paper describes and analyzes farm financial accounting system use and preferences by type.

Abstract

A study of the characteristics of successful new consumer financial products is described. The first stage of the investigation involved the identification of financial product attributes possibly associated with success. A total of 43 were found. Information was then collected on these attributes for 77 new financial products and was simplified by grouping into nine distinct factors. The article describes all nine factors in detail with illustrations. Four of the factors are particularly associated with success. They are: “overall quality” (the product, the delivery system, after‐sales service, the organisation′s reputation for quality); having a differentiated product (being first, being innovative); product fit and internal marketing (the new product complementing existing products and receiving the support of staff); and use of technology.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the variables that influence corporate real estate (CRE) decision-making and gauge their relative importance to each other, thereby understanding the consequent challenges/implications for CRE managers (CREM’s).

Design/methodology/approach

Interviews were undertaken with experienced CREM’s using the causal network elicitation technique to create decision networks for the variables they considered for the specifically defined scenario: dealing with surplus property from a change of business strategy. These networks illustrate the complexity of the mental representations required for the realignment of the CRE portfolio. The key variables are more extensive than alignment theory suggests, namely, financial stakeholders. Additional variables identified include risk, lease accounting, costs, financial analysis, business metrics and motivational drivers. The latter indicates the importance of self-esteem and peer recognition for CREM’s and financial benefits for the C-suite. Accordingly strategy alignment needs to incorporate CRE both in terms of strategy creation and implementation.

Findings

These networks illustrate the complexity of the mental representations required for the realignment of the CRE portfolio. Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study how board attributes impact corporate social responsibility (CSR). In particular, this paper aims to empirically examine the impact of financial performance on the relationship between board attributes and CSR. Board attributes such as board size, board independence, female board representation and CEO-chair duality are included.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses panel data set of 200 French companies listed during 2007–2018 period. The direct and moderating effects were tested by using multiple regression technique.

Findings

The results indicate that significant direct relationships exist among board attributes and CSR. Board independence and female board representation are positively linked with CSR. However, board size and CEO duality are negatively associated with CSR. Findings show, also, that corporate financial performance accentuates significantly the effect of board size, board independence and CEO-duality on CSR, but does not moderate the relationship between female board representation and CSR.

Practical implications

The findings may be of interest to different stakeholders and policy-makers and regulatory bodies interested in enhancing CG initiatives to strengthen corporate social responsibility because it suggests thinking about implementing a broadly accepted framework of good CG practices to meet the demand for greater transparency and accountability. As an extension to this research, further study can examine the impact of ownership structure and audit quality on CSR issues.

Originality/value

This study extends the dynamic relationship between CG mechanisms and CSR by offering new evidence on how corporate financial moderates this relationship.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore whether different board diversity attributes (corporate governance aspect) can be used to predict financial distress. This study also aims to identify what type of prediction models are more applicable to capture board diversity along with conventional predictors.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used Chinese A-listed companies during 2007–2016. Board diversity dimensions of gender, age, education, expertise and independence are categorized into three broad categories; relation-oriented diversity (age and gender), task-oriented diversity (expertise and education) and structural diversity (independence). The data is divided into test and validation sets. Six statistical and machine learning models that included logistic regression, dynamic hazard, K-nearest neighbor, random forest (RF), bagging and boosting were compared on Type I errors, Type II errors, accuracy and area under the curve.

Findings

The results indicate that board diversity attributes can significantly predict the financial distress of firms. Overall, the machine learning models perform better and the best model in terms of Type I error and accuracy is RF.

Practical implications

This study not only highlights symptoms but also causes of financial distress, which are deeply rooted in weak corporate governance. The result of the study can be used in future credit risk assessment by incorporating board diversity attributes. The study has implications for academicians, practitioners and nomination committees.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to comprehensively investigate how different attributes of diversity can predict financial distress in Chinese firms. Further, this study also explores, which financial distress prediction models can show better predictive power.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine how audit committee (AC) attributes influence quality and quantity disclosure of energy consumed by the listed nonfinancial firms for the period of five years (2016–2020). The study aims at providing empirical evidence on how board of director’s independence influences the relationship between AC attributes and firms’ energy in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs) on world climate policy.

Design/methodology/approach

The study obtained data from a sample of 83 listed nonfinancial firms, content analysis technique was used to compute energy disclosure indexes using global reporting initiative standards, while regression analysis was conducted to test the relationship among research variables.

Findings

The study revealed that AC independence, diversity and meetings were significantly related with energy disclosure. Also, the study found that other variables were insignificantly related with energy disclosure.

Research limitations/implications

The study is constrained for not considering all listed firms in the country. Furthermore, the study considered selected attributes, other important audit-committee size attributes such as audit-committee size, audit-committee size tenure could be study in by the future study.

Practical implications

The study’s findings would have practical implications for corporations and other business organizations seeking to actively involve the energy-related SDGs 7 and 13 in their business models and successfully communicate these efforts to stakeholders.

Originality/value

To the best of author’s knowledge, this is the first study that provides empirical evidence on the effect of AC attributes on the energy disclosure using effect of board independence as moderator in Nigeria.
