Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the interactions among enterprise resource planning (ERP) practices, supply chain orientation (SCO), and operational performance (OPER) by forming a macro perspective based on a scientific foundation powered by a resource-based view.

Design/methodology/approach

Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to verify the underlying dimensions of SCO and ERP practices. The covariance-based structural equation modeling was employed to test the direct and indirect effects of SCO and ERP practices constructs on OPER.

Findings

Results revealed that SCO has significant and positive effects on OPER, whereas ERP practices do not. Moreover, the indirect effect of ERP practices with the mediating effects of SCO is stronger than their direct effects. In addition, the origin of the ERP practices is found to be an important critical success factor.

Originality/value

Although much research has investigated the direct effect of ERP practices on performance, this study points out the importance of SCO in observing the stronger impacts of ERP practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an extended and modified value-added (VA) intellectual coefficient (VAIC) model, which includes intellectual capital (IC) components which were missing in the original VAIC approach. The proposed model has been used to explore the relationship between IC and firm performance for Turkish manufacturing firms on a more detailed level.

Design/methodology/approach

Multiple regression analysis has been employed to identify the IC components, which predict the performance of the firm and the moderating effect of some IC components on IC components–firm performance relationship. Data are required to calculate the IC components, and firm performance variables have been obtained from the financial reports of the Turkish manufacturing firms for the period 2003–2013.

Findings

According to the results for Turkish manufacturing sector innovation capital efficiency has a moderating effect on the relationship between structural capital efficiency (SCE) and profitability, meaning, depending on an increase in R&D expenses, the effect of SCE on profitability also increases. On the other hand, it has been found that innovation capital efficiency has a direct impact on firms’ productivity. The results also showed that IC efficiency components have a moderating role on the relationship between capital employed efficiency and profitability.

Research limitations/implications

There might be a time lag until the effect of R&D investments can be observed in firms’ performance. However, this lagged impact of innovation capital and also other IC components on future firm performance has not been investigated due to concerns related to sample size.

Originality/value

The proposed model differs from the original VAIC model in three ways: it, namely, includes two additional IC components, customer capital (CC) and innovation capital. It explores the moderating effect of innovation capital on structural capital–firm performance relationship and the moderating effect of IC components on employed capital–firm performance relationship. As the last difference, it proposes an alteration in the VA calculation due to newly added IC components, CC and innovation capital.

This study aims to investigate the effects of flight delays, distance, number of passengers and seasonality on revenue in the Turkish air transport industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effects of flight delays, distance, number of passengers and seasonality on revenue in the Turkish air transport industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The domestic return routes of a Turkish airline company were examined to address this issue. Among five cities and six airports, 14 major domestic return routes were selected. The augmented mean group (AMG) estimator and common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG) estimator were conducted with a two-way fixed effects (FE) robustness test in this study.

Findings

The results show that arrival flight delay and departure flight delay had negative effects on revenue, whereas the distance between airports, the number of air passengers and seasonality had positive effects on revenue.

Research limitations/implications

The data used in this study were retrieved from a Turkish airline company; for future research, other airline companies operating in Turkey may be included.

Practical implications

These findings could be evaluated by air transportation leaders to provide a guide to make strategic decisions to achieve greater performance in this competitive environment.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper comes from the facts that besides distance and number of passengers, the authors control for the seasonality when assessing the effects of flight delay on revenue; they use panel data techniques, which permit them to control for individual heterogeneity, and create more variability, more efficiency and less collinearity among the variables; they use two recent panel data techniques, CCEMG and AMG, allowing for cross-section dependence.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study has been to determine the level of difficulties/obstacles associated with the implementation of ISO 9000, the importance of achieving expected improvements and the level of success in achieving expected improvements. The overall aim is to specifically explore the influence of these factors on service companies' satisfaction with ISO 9000.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey methodology was used to gather data. Simple t‐ and Tukey tests, principal components analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used to test the hypotheses of this study.

Findings

The results suggest that service companies may be more than satisfied with ISO 9000 if they lay greater emphasis on considering alternative approaches to educating the top and medium level managers and receiving support from top management. They also need to focus on enhancing the enterprise's quality in terms of reputation, inter personal relations, and motivation on the part of employees.

Research limitations/implications

There are several limitations. First, the fact should not be ignore that these relationships may not apply to all businesses because the data have been collected from service companies. Second, a large percentage of the satisfaction remains unexplained suggesting the need for additional research incorporating potential unmeasured variables in the current study.

Practical implications

Educating top and medium level managers must increase in importance as a competitive priority. Personnel must be provided with extensive training particularly in communication and quality skills. Activities aimed at increasing personnel motivation must be given a high priority.

Originality/value

This study presents a thorough understanding on a model of service companies' satisfaction with ISO 9000, and how various factors moderate several paths of the model.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine various factors affecting users' behavioral intention to use (BIU) enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, based on data from 75 potential end‐users of ERP systems.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey methodology is used to gather data. The research model is constructed based on the findings of the previous studies.

Findings

The results indicate that subjective norms, perceived usefulness (PU) and education level are determinants of BIU the system. In addition, PU affects attitude toward use, and both perceived ease of use (PEOU) and compatibility affect PU. In addition, among personal characteristics, education level has a significant effect on PEOU and behavioral intention. However, there is no significant relationship between attitude and behavioral intention.

Research limitations/implications

As the sample is limited, the findings will require validation among other populations.

Practical implications

This paper provides evidence that compatibility and PEOU are important for the users to perceive the system's usefulness. Also, subjective norm is very important for the BIU the ERP systems.

Originality/value

This paper combines technology acceptance model, theory of reasoned action and innovation diffusion theory with personal characteristics of gender, education level and experience to determine the factors important for the acceptance of ERP systems.

Abstract

This paper examines how young consumers perceive the Web as an advertising medium in relation to eight traditional media on 15 constructs elicited from subjects. Results indicate that the Web is perceived to be very far from most of the other media, except point of purchase and direct mail. Conducting correspondence analysis and cluster analysis revealed the reasons for why the Web advertising is located close to point of purchase and direct mail. A noticeable finding was that farthest away from the Web is outdoor. Implications based on the findings are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to apply Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC™) of Pulic to compare quoted information technology and communication companies on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE), in terms of intellectual capital efficiency. This study also examines VAIC™, and its components' impact on company performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Multiple regression analysis was employed to identify the variables that significantly contribute to the company performance. Data required to calculate VAIC™ and its components were obtained from the 2005‐2007 annual reports and balance sheets of the companies.

Findings

As a whole, all the companies had a relatively higher human capital efficiency than structural and capital efficiencies. In 2007, Turkcell was the most efficient company based on VAIC™ assessment, while Link Bilgisayar and Plastikkart were the least efficient companies. Additionally, the results of the study revealed that factors such as human capital efficiency, firm leverage, and firm size, predicted profitability well. Among them, human capital efficiency had the highest impact. In addition, capital employed efficiency was found to be a significant predictor of both productivity and return on equity, and the only determinant of market valuation was the firm size.

Practical implications

This study allowed ITC companies to benchmark themselves according to the intellectual capital efficiencies and develop strategies to enhance their company's performance.

Originality/value

This study is the first that measures intellectual capital performance and its impact on the company performance of the quoted information technology and communication companies on the ISE.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to examine the effect of learning orientation (commitment to learning, shared vision, open‐mindedness) on the product innovation performance (product innovation efficacy and efficiency) of companies in Turkey.

Design/methodology/approach

A structural equation‐modeling approach was applied to identify the variables that significantly affected the product innovation performance. Using LISREL 8.54, the data collected from 150 companies were used to test the proposed research model.

Findings

Empirical testing of the research model revealed that open‐mindedness was the sole predictor of product innovation efficacy as well as efficiency. However, the effects of shared vision and commitment to learning on the product innovation performance were found to be insignificant.

Practical implications

Relevant implications are provided for management as to how to improve product innovation performance.

Originality/value

The present study puts forward a theoretical model that identifies and explains the relation between the learning orientation and product innovation performance of companies operating in Turkey.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of stressors (role ambiguity, role conflict, work‐overload, work‐family conflict), job stress, job satisfaction and organizational commitment on the information technology (IT) professionals' intention to quit their jobs in Turkey.

Design/methodology/approach

A structural equation modeling approach was employed to identify the variables that significantly affect the decision to quit. Using LISREL 8.54, data collected from 204 IT professionals were used to test the proposed research model.

Findings

The results revealed that intention to quit one's job is explained by job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Besides, role ambiguity and job stress exert negative indirect effects on the intention to quit one's job. Additionally, organizational commitment is strongly explained by job satisfaction, and job satisfaction is predicted by role ambiguity and job stress.

Practical implications

The study offers several significant suggestions for the continuity of IT professionals in companies.

Originality/value

There are two contributions of this paper. First, this study provides evidence for the impact of stressors, job stress, job satisfaction and organizational commitment on intention to quit jobs among IT professionals in Turkey. Second, it also provides insight into the importance of stress factors by dividing the stressors into specific stress factors such as work‐family conflict, work‐overload, role conflict, and role ambiguity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the relative importance of the usability and functionality factors for online auction and shopping web sites from the perspective of young consumers.

Design/methodology/approach

The Analytical Network Process (ANP) was used to analyse the relative importance of the usability and functionality factors.

Findings

The findings show that customers of online auction and shopping web sites give higher priority to usability and usability factors than to functionality, with navigation and interaction being the factors of highest relative importance.

Practical implications

First, customers assign higher priority to usability factors. Thus, early in the design phase, designers should attach more importance to navigation‐ and interaction‐related aspects of their web sites. Second, designers of web sites should include basic and advanced search options to increase the number of the web site users.

Originality/value

The study is the first to examine the relative importance of the usability and functionality factors of online auction and shopping web sites. Furthermore, the study fills this gap by identifying the complex interrelationships between various features of usability and functionality, and their impact on each other, by examining two Turkish online‐auction and shopping web sites.
