Abstract

Purpose

Social media fatigue (SMF) has been widely recognized; however, previous studies have included various concepts into a single fatigue construct. Fatigue has typically been explored from the stressor-strain-outcome (SSO) or stimulus-organism-response (SOR) perspectives. To further investigate SMF, the authors split it into the two constructs of exhaustion and disinterest. Furthermore, the authors introduced the concept of emotional labor and identified rules that may affect surface and deep acting strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors designed and conducted a survey to collect data from social networking platform users.

Findings

Results from 364 users of social networking platforms supported most of the authors' hypotheses. First, most of the display rules affect the choice of deep or surface acting. Second, both types of acting lead to exhaustion, but only surface acting leads to disinterest. Third, discontinuance intention is affected by both types of fatigue.

Originality/value

This study contributes to SMF research by adding more antecedents (deep and surface acting) based on the emotional labor perspective and showing the impacts of communication rules on emotional labor. In addition, this study also distinguishes disinterest-style fatigue from exhaustion.

Abstract

Purpose

Repetitive lifting tasks have detrimental effects upon balance control and may contribute toward fall injuries, yet despite this causal linkage, risk factors involved remain elusive. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effects of different weights and lifting postures on balance control using simulated repetitive lifting tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

In total, 20 healthy male participants underwent balance control assessments before and immediately after a fatiguing repetitive lifting tasks using three different weights in a stoop (ten participants) or a squat (ten participants) lifting posture. Balance control assessments required participants to stand still on a force plate with or without a foam (which simulated an unstable surface) while center of pressure (CoP) displacement parameters on the force plate was measured.

Findings

Results reveal that: increased weight (but not lifting posture) significantly increases CoP parameters; stoop and squat lifting postures performed until subjective fatigue induce a similar increase in CoP parameters; and fatigue adversely effected the participant’s balance control on an unstable surface vis-à-vis a stable surface. Findings suggest that repetitive lifting of heavier weights would significantly jeopardize individuals’ balance control on unstable supporting surfaces, which may heighten the risk of falls.

Originality/value

This research offers an entirely new and novel approach to measuring the impact that different lifting weights and postures may have upon worker stability and consequential fall incidents that may arise.

Abstract

Purpose

Organisations implement changes either to address real business imperatives or to follow trends in their industries. But frequent changes in an organisation often lead to employee change fatigue and change cynicism. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the change logic of appropriateness and the logic of consequences on change fatigue and change cynicism and the impact of change fatigue and change cynicism on change success.

Design/methodology/approach

To carry out this study, the authors collected data on a sample of 320 participants from diverse organisations, and they used structural equation modelling (SEM) techniques to test our hypotheses depicted in the research model.

Findings

The authors found that the change logic of consequences reduces both change fatigue and change cynicism, whereas the change logic of appropriateness increases change fatigue. The authors also found that change fatigue does not have any direct effect on change success, although it maintains an indirect negative effect on change success through change cynicism.

Practical implications

Along with other practical implications, the authors recommend that change managers help employees understand any logic of consequences that sustain their change initiatives. Additionally, change managers should work to prevent change fatigue from turning into change cynicism, which is the real precursor of reduced change success.

Originality/value

This study is among the first to show that employees experience change fatigue and change cynicism differently, depending on the reason underlying the change. It is also among the first to show that change fatigue does not affect change success directly but does so through the interplay of change cynicism.

Abstract

In Part 1, background information on mechanical properties and metallurgy of solder alloys and soldered joints has been presented. In this part, mechanisms of damage and degradation of components and soldered joints during soldering, during transport, and during field life are discussed. Thermal shock damage of components and excessive dissolution of metallisations are the major effects during soldering. During transport, fatigue of leads and fracture may be caused by vibration and mechanical shocks respectively. During field life, degradation is governed primarily by low cycle fatigue of the solder and incidentally also by formation of intermetallic diffusion layers between solder and base metals. This article contains an extended illustration of solder fatigue of joints on a variety of component and board types. Finally, the influence of the variety of soldered constructions in electronic circuits on solder fatigue is discussed.

Abstract

Conducts a pilot study on excessive fatigue in patrol officers of high crime rate areas, using data collected by 53 telephone esquires. Compares police overtime to that considered acceptable in other professions where public safety is implicated and finds that police receive unfavorable treatment. Considers the vulnerability of police to the effects of fatigue and the potential costs of fatigue on cognitive performance, misconduct, health and safety. Remarks that police are culturally constrained to accept fatigue; that managers depend on overtime to cope with fluctuating demands and to operate within economic limits; that police are obliged to spend lengthy hours in court; that officers can become dependent on overtime pay. Suggests inter alia that community policing will help in avoiding “exhausted crusaders”. Advocates use of self‐regulation, peer monitoring and health care, use of improved technology, modifying work schedules, limiting exposure to high crime and considering reforms to civil liability.

Abstract

Purpose

The disruptions brought by COVID-19 pandemic compelled a large part of public sector employees to remotely work from home. Home-based teleworking ensured the continuity of the provision of public services, reducing disruptions brought by the pandemic. However, little is known about the implications of telecommuting from home on the ability of remote employees to manage the work-life interplay. The article adopts a retrospective approach, investigating data provided by the sixth European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS) to shed lights into this timely topic.

Design/methodology/approach

An empirical, quantitative research design was crafted. On the one hand, the direct effects of telecommuting from home on work-life balance were investigated. On the other hand, work engagement and perceived work-related fatigue were included in the empirical analysis as mediating variables which intervene in the relationship between telecommuting from home and work-life balance.

Findings

Home-based telecommuting negatively affected the work-life balance of public servants. Employees who remotely worked from home suffered from increased work-to-life and life-to-work conflicts. Telecommuting from home triggered greater work-related fatigue, which worsened the perceived work-life balance. Work engagement positively mediated the negative effects of working from home on work-life balance.

Practical implications

Telecommuting from home has side effects on the ability of remote workers to handle the interplay between work-related commitments and daily life activities. This comes from the overlapping between private life and work, which leads to greater contamination of personal concerns and work duties. Work engagement lessens the perceptions of work-life unbalance. The increased work-related fatigue triggered by remote working may produce a physical and emotional exhaustion of home-based teleworkers.

Originality/value

The article investigates the side effects of remotely working from home on work-life balance, stressing the mediating role of work engagement and work-related fatigue.

Abstract

This article concerns the experimental investigations of the effect of frequency of cyclic stressing on the reversed bend fatigue strength of the aluminium alloys 4·4 per cent Cu‐Mg‐Si‐Mn (L.70, L.71, L.72 and L.73) and the 5 per cent Zn‐Mg‐Cu type (D.T.D.687) over the frequency range 10 to 1,000 cycles per second. The central theme of the theoretical analysis of the experimental work has been based on the working hypothesis that the so‐called frequency effect on fatigue strength, as normally measured by fatigue tests in air, contains, in most cases, an appreciable corrosion fatigue factor together with the true frequency effect. The corrosion fatigue factor, being time and frequency dependent, becomes dominant after an appreciable time exposure whilst the true frequency effect recedes to insignificance. This state of affairs becomes reversed when considering fatigue strength on a much shorter time basis. A study of the kinetics of corrosion fatigue, and fatigue under normal ambient conditions where complete corrosion protection has been afforded, has led to a method whereby the true frequency effect can be separated from the net effect of corrosion and frequency as measured by ambient fatigue strength values. The extraction of the true frequency effect by this method has resulted in its formulation thus:

Abstract

Purpose

A large number of data have proved that under the same von Mises equivalent strain condition, the fatigue life under multiaxial non-proportional loading is often much lower than the life under multiaxial proportional loading. This is mainly due to the influence of the non-proportional loading path and the additional hardening effect, which lead to a sharp decrease in life.

Design/methodology/approach

The modulus attenuation effect is used to modify the static hardening coefficient, and the predicted value obtained is closer to the additional hardening coefficient obtained from the experiment. A fatigue life model can consider non-proportional paths, and additional hardening effects are proposed. And the model uses multiaxial fatigue test data to verify the validity and adaptability of the new model. The life prediction accuracy and material application range are satisfactory.

Findings

Because loading path and additional hardening of the material affect fatigue life, a new multiaxis fatigue life model based on the critical plane approach is proposed. And introducing a non-proportional additional damage coefficient, the joint influence of the load path and the additional hardening can be considered. The model's life prediction accuracy and material applicability were verified with multiaxial fatigue test data of eight materials and nine loads compared with the prediction accuracy of the Kandil–Brown–Miller (KBM) model and Fatemi–Socie (FS) model.

Originality/value

The physical meaning of the new model is clear, convenient for practical engineering applications.
