Abstract

To enhance the development of individuals for executive positions, fast‐track management development programmes have been adopted by many organisations. However, such programmes do not always lead to positive consequences for the participant. The purpose of the present research was to investigate the frustrations of participants in an entry‐level fast‐track programme. Results of the study suggest several important lessons for those responsible for fast‐track programmes. First, participants′ major frustrations involved issues regarding ongoing career guidance, future job assignment uncertainty, and the degree of challenge, responsibility, and variety inherent in their job assignments. Second, participants are likely to have high expectations for themselves and their careers which must be considered. Third, company executives and programme supervisors may misjudge the frustrations of participants; therefore, monitoring such frustrations is important.

Abstract

Explains that fast‐track programmes have traditionally been the preferred mechanism for recruiting and developing high potential graduates to become the senior management cadre of the future. However, many recent changes within organizations have led to more fluid structures that no longer support traditional hierarchical career progression opportunities. Presents a qualitative study of 20 major fast‐track recruiters which was designed to explore the philosophies, strategies, and human resource management policies and practices used to manage the careers of the fast‐track population, within the current context. Demonstrates that for many organizations, owing to internal and external changes, there has been a shift in career philosophy. Organizations are revising their career management policies and practices, to reflect the “new deal” offered to fast‐track graduates. Highlights some apparent paradoxes between organizations’ career philosophies, policies and practices and the fast‐track philosophy.

Bruce-Alfred Technologies (BAT) has built a successful business selling packaged software. Its marketing has long promised free technical support to all customers, a key point of differentiation from BAT's competitors. However, the call center providing tech support is now in crisis. Wait times for callers are unacceptably high, leading to low customer satisfaction and negative press. BAT managers are evaluating the Fast Track Proposal, which would create two classes of calls. Fast Track calls would be promised a one-minute wait but pay for service. Standard calls would still be free but be given lower priority and have no wait time guarantee. Considers both the operational impact of this change and the strategic considerations of backing away from free tech support.

Abstract

Purpose

To generate electricity, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are among the best, most eco-friendly and most cost-effective solutions available. Extraction of maximum possible electricity from the solar PV system is complicated by a number of factors brought on by the ever-changing weather conditions under which it must operate. Many conventional and evolutionary algorithm-based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques have the limitation of not being able to extract maximum power under partial shade and rapidly varying irradiance. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to propose a novel hybrid slime mould assisted with perturb and observe (P&O) global MPPT technique (HSMO) for the hybrid bridge link-honey comb (BL-HC) configured PV system to enhance the better maximum power during dynamic and steady state operations within less time.

Design/methodology/approach

In this method, a hybridization of two algorithms is proposed to track the true with faster convergence under PSCs. Initially, the slime mould optimization (SMO) algorithm is initiated for exploration of optimum duty cycles and later P&O algorithm is initiated for exploitation of global duty cycle for the DC–DC converter to operate at GMPP and for fast convergence.

Findings

The effectiveness of the proposed HSMO MPPT is compared with adaptive coefficient particle swarm optimization (ACPSO), flower pollination algorithm and SMO MPPT techniques in terms of tracked GMPP, convergence time/tracking speed and efficacy under six complex partial shading conditions. From the results, it is noticed that the proposed algorithm tracks the true GMPP under most of the shading conditions with less tracking time when compared to other MPPT techniques.

Originality/value

This paper proposes a novel hybrid slime mould assisted with perturb and observe (P&O) global MPPT technique (HSMO) for the hybrid BL-HC configured PV system enhance the better maximum power under partial shading conditions (PSCs). This method operated in two stages as SMO for exploration and P&O for exploitation for faster convergence and to track true GMPP under PSCs. The proposed approach largely improves the performance of the MPP tracking of the PV systems. Initially, the proposed MPPT technique is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Furthermore, an experimental setup has been designed and implemented. Simulation results obtained are validated through experimental results which prove the viability of the proposed technique for an efficient green energy solution.

Abstract

We formulate static and dynamic empirical models of promotion where the current promotion probability depends on the hierarchical level in the firm, individual human capital, unobserved individual specific attributes, time-varying firm-specific variables, as well as endogenous past promotion histories (in the dynamic version). Within the static versions, we investigate the relative influence of the key determinants of promotions and how these influences vary by hierarchical levels. In the dynamic version of the model, we examine the causal effect of past speed of promotion on promotion outcomes. The model is fit on an eight-year panel of 30,000 American executives employed in more than 300 different firms. The stochastic process generating promotions may be viewed as a series of promotion probabilities which become smaller as an individual moves up in the hierarchy and which are primarily explained by unobserved heterogeneity and promotion opportunities. Firm variables and observed human capital variables (age, tenure, and education) play a surprisingly small role. We also find that, conditional on unobservables, the promotion probability is only enhanced by the speed of promotion achieved in the past (a structural fast track effect) for a subset of the population and is negative for the majority. In general, the magnitude of the individual-specific effect of past speed of promotion is inversely related to schooling, tenure, and hierarchical level.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the careers of 230 professional judges in the German labor court system. Judges who are promoted early for the first time – “fast starters” – are more likely to be promoted for the second time. Fast starters, however, do not achieve a second promotion earlier – there is no evidence of a fast career track. Furthermore, judges who publish scientific books or papers are more likely to be promoted for the second time. Hence, careers neither are random nor do they follow bureaucratic criteria such as seniority. They can be understood as the outcome of a succession of tournaments for promotion that sustains career prospects both for “fast starters” and for “late bloomers”. Implications for judicial incentives and the quality of matching of judges with judicial offices are inferred.

Abstract

The current rhetoric about the demise of traditional concepts of “career” poses a challenge to organizations which rely on the development of managerial talent through fast‐track programmes. Reports on the career management philosophy, strategy, policy and practice of 20 organizations which are major graduate recruiters. Human resource and career management specialists responsible for fast‐track recruitment and career development within these companies provided information via semi‐structured interviews. Data were analysed using content and thematic analysis with the aid of a qualitative data analysis package to elicit patterns and trends in the approaches being used. Organizations varied in the extent to which they were attempting to achieve a shift in the employment relationship offered to graduates. Symbolic shifts were being generated through both cultural and process changes in an attempt to move from a traditional notion of career to a transactional‐type relationship with graduates, based on opportunities for development.

Abstract

With the feminist movement of the late 1960‘s and early 1970’s, “fast track” women eagerly sought advancement within male‐dominated Corporate America. By 1990 women succeeded in entry‐level and middle‐manager positions, but failed, with few notable exceptions, to make substantial gains in upper echelons. Many reasons for the failure exist, including family considerations, stubborn cultural and gender biases, and a lack of adequate training and educational opportunities. In response, and in frustration, many women have turned to entrepreneurship as a way to succeed at the top. Changing demographics, such as the new cultural and ethnic diversity, will open the upper level corporate doors for women as white males become the new minority entrant to the work force. The fast track derailment experienced by women over the past twenty years is temporary, and will begin to change by the end of the 1990's.

Abstract

Purpose

Multi-domain convolutional neural network (MDCNN) model has been widely used in object recognition and tracking in the field of computer vision. However, if the objects to be tracked move rapid or the appearances of moving objects vary dramatically, the conventional MDCNN model will suffer from the model drift problem. To solve such problem in tracking rapid objects under limiting environment for MDCNN model, this paper proposed an auto-attentional mechanism-based MDCNN (AA-MDCNN) model for the rapid moving and changing objects tracking under limiting environment.

Design/methodology/approach

First, to distinguish the foreground object between background and other similar objects, the auto-attentional mechanism is used to selectively aggregate the weighted summation of all feature maps to make the similar features related to each other. Then, the bidirectional gated recurrent unit (Bi-GRU) architecture is used to integrate all the feature maps to selectively emphasize the importance of the correlated feature maps. Finally, the final feature map is obtained by fusion the above two feature maps for object tracking. In addition, a composite loss function is constructed to solve the similar but different attribute sequences tracking using conventional MDCNN model.

Findings

In order to validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed AA-MDCNN model, this paper used ImageNet-Vid dataset to train the object tracking model, and the OTB-50 dataset is used to validate the AA-MDCNN tracking model. Experimental results have shown that the augmentation of auto-attentional mechanism will improve the accuracy rate 2.75% and success rate 2.41%, respectively. In addition, the authors also selected six complex tracking scenarios in OTB-50 dataset; over eleven attributes have been validated that the proposed AA-MDCNN model outperformed than the comparative models over nine attributes. In addition, except for the scenario of multi-objects moving with each other, the proposed AA-MDCNN model solved the majority rapid moving objects tracking scenarios and outperformed than the comparative models on such complex scenarios.

Originality/value

This paper introduced the auto-attentional mechanism into MDCNN model and adopted Bi-GRU architecture to extract key features. By using the proposed AA-MDCNN model, rapid object tracking under complex background, motion blur and occlusion objects has better effect, and such model is expected to be further applied to the rapid object tracking in the real world.
