Abstract
Purpose
Ensuring the early detection of structural issues in aircraft is crucial for preserving human lives. One effective approach involves identifying cracks in composite structures. This paper employs experimental modal analysis and a multi-variable Gaussian process regression method to detect and locate cracks in glass fiber composite beams.
Design/methodology/approach
The present study proposes Gaussian process regression model trained by the first three natural frequencies determined experimentally using a roving impact hammer method with crystal four-channel analyzer, uniaxial accelerometer and experimental modal analysis software. The first three natural frequencies of the cracked composite beams obtained from experimental modal analysis are used to train a multi-variable Gaussian process regression model for crack localization. Radial basis function is used as a kernel function, and hyperparameters are optimized using the negative log marginal likelihood function. Bayesian conditional probability likelihood function is used to estimate the mean and variance for crack localization in composite structures.
Findings
The efficiency of Gaussian process regression is improved in the present work with the normalization of input data. The fitted Gaussian process regression model validates with experimental modal analysis for crack localization in composite structures. The discrepancy between predicted and measured values is 1.8%, indicating strong agreement between the experimental modal analysis and Gaussian process regression methods. Compared to other recent methods in the literature, this approach significantly improves efficiency and reduces error from 18.4% to 1.8%. Gaussian process regression is an efficient machine learning algorithm for crack localization in composite structures.
Originality/value
The experimental modal analysis results are first utilized for crack localization in cracked composite structures. Additionally, the input data are normalized and employed in a machine learning algorithm, such as the multi-variable Gaussian process regression method, to efficiently determine the crack location in these structures.

Abstract
Purpose
We discuss how experimental analysis can be integrated into strategic human resources management (SHRM) research in Africa so as to develop theory and value principles to guide executives.
Design/methodology/approach
The model we propose – experiment-based SHRM – is predicated on the use of experimental approaches to demonstrate the value of SHRM and to derive principles that guide research and practice in Africa.
Findings
We illustrate how scholars can conduct experiments from an SHRM perspective.
Research limitations/implications
We discuss the strengths and limitations of the model and suggest ways of maximizing its potential.
Practical implications
The technique is a resource for scholars of SHRM in Africa. They can use it to supplement other approaches for studying SHRM.
Originality/value
This chapter discusses a typology of experimental analysis. The lack of such a typology in the context of Africa makes it a valuable contribution. Thus, it fills a contextual gap in the SHRM research methodology literature. It can therefore help graduate students and junior faculty improve their research.

Abstract
This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the area of material processing. The latest trends in metal forming, non‐metal forming, powder metallurgy and composite material processing are briefly discussed. The range of applications of finite elements on these subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of the paper is to give FE researchers/users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in material processing for 1994‐1996, where 1,370 references are listed. This bibliography is an updating of the paper written by Brannberg and Mackerle which has been published in Engineering Computations, Vol. 11 No. 5, 1994, pp. 413‐55.

Abstract
Culture is a central concept broadly studied in social anthropology and sociology. It has been gaining increasing attention in economics, appearing in research on labor market discrimination, identity, gender, and social preferences. Most experimental economics research on culture studies cross-national or cross-ethnic differences in economic behavior. In contrast, we explain laboratory behavior using two cultural dimensions adopted from a prominent general cultural framework in contemporary social anthropology: group commitment and grid control. Groupness measures the extent to which individual identity is incorporated into group or collective identity; gridness measures the extent to which social and political prescriptions intrinsically influence individual behavior. Grid-group characteristics are measured for each individual using selected items from the World Values Survey. We hypothesize that these attributes allow us to systematically predict behavior in a way that discriminates among multiple forms of social preferences using a simple, parsimonious deductive model. The theoretical predictions are further tested in the economics laboratory by applying them to the dictator, ultimatum, and trust games. We find that these predictions are confirmed overall for most experimental games, although the strength of empirical support varies across games. We conclude that grid-group cultural theory is a viable predictor of people’s economic behavior, then discuss potential limitations of the current approach and ways to improve it.

Abstract
Methodological pluralism in consumer research is usually confined to post‐positivist interpretive approaches. Argues, however, that a positivistic stance, radical behaviourism, can enrich epistemological debate among researchers with the recognition of radical behaviourism′s ultimate reliance on interpretation as well as science. Although radical behaviourist explanation was initially founded on Machian positivism, its account of complex social behaviours such as purchase and consumption is necessarily interpretive, inviting comparison with the hermeneutical approaches currently emerging in consumer research. Radical behaviourist interpretation attributes meaning to behaviour by identifying its environmental determinants, especially the learning history of the individual in relation to the consequences similar prior behaviour has effected. The nature of such interpretation is demonstrated for purchase and consumption responses by means of a critique of radical behaviourism as applied to complex human activity. In the process, develops and applies a framework for radical behaviourist interpretation of purchase and consumption to four operant equifinality classes of consumer behaviour: accomplishment, pleasure, accumulation and maintenance. Some epistemological implications of this framework, the behavioural perspective model (BPM) of purchase and consumption, are discussed in the context of the relativity and incommensurability of research paradigms. Finally, evaluates the interpretive approach, particularly in terms of its relevance to the nature and understanding of managerial marketing.

Purpose
Steel fibers reinforced concrete (SFRC) is now widely accepted as a construction material for its added benefits. The proven increases in high shear capacity, toughness, bridging action of fibers and bond improvement from addition of steel fibers into mix design is a field yet to be explored, Therefore, Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) beam-column joint with steel fibers was modeled and analyzed for cyclic loading.
Design/methodology/approach
Beam-column joint is the most critical section of a structure under mixed loading such as that during a seismic episode. Therefore, in this research a reinforced SFRC beam column joint is modeled and analyzed for cyclic earthquake loading with the help of finite element analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS to compare the results with the experimental study.
Findings
Nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analysis are carried out on the SFRC joint for the comparison of simulated results with the experimental analysis.
Originality/value
In this paper, Initially, modeling of SFRC joint was done. Then, the finite element analysis of beam-column joint with steel fibers was carried out. After number of simulations, obtained FEA results were compared with the experimental work on the based on the load vs deflection curve, shear stresses, plastic strain region and plastic strain pattern. After the comparison, it was found that the performance of the numeric model for cyclic loading verified the experimental study, and the results obtained were quite promising.

Purpose
Recognizing the difficulty inherent in studying organizational change stimulated by the external environment, this paper seeks to present a four‐phase model useful for collecting information and for analyzing the impact of organization‐environment dynamics.
Design/methodology/approach
In the context of a case study of academic health centers, a research methods model is offered with four phases: case study; comparative case study; experimental/quasi experimental; and meta analysis. This four‐phase methodology relies on varying information styles and data streams within the context of exploratory, comparative, and large dataset analysis.
Findings
The synthesis of research approach highlights the strengths, weaknesses, and the linkage to system thinking in theory and in practice and are illustrated by the case.
Practical implications
Mixed methods approaches are increasingly sought and used in multi‐disciplinary research and applied settings. The model is useful for examining the multiple effects of the organization environment on a wide range of industries, with medical/health care demonstrated here.
Originality/value
Few models of mixed methods approaches exist – this one synthesizes existing approaches incorporating many types of “data”.

Abstract
Purpose
The number of universities offering Master of Translation and Interpreting (MTI) in China has increased to 316 in 15 years. This paper aims to take a closer look at the production patterns of experimental report theses in terms of total number, distribution across universities, supervision model and research content, reflects on the problems and suggests improvements, provides a reference for MTI education in China and beyond.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper presents a bibliometric analysis of the published final theses of experimental reports for the MTI in China between the years 2012 and 2022, the period during which this type of thesis was produced, to identify the production patterns of these theses.
Findings
The number of experimental reports published by the nine leading universities accounts for 80% of the total 296 papers. The uneven development is also reflected in the supervision model and research content. Most universities can structure the main content of theses according to the suggestions of the MTI Guidance Training Outline. However, there are still deficiencies in the areas of experimental design, experimental validity, research questions and academic standards.
Originality/value
This paper reflects on the problems of MTI theses of experimental reports. Also, suggestions are made for linking top-level design and university education, for joint progress in faculty development and talent training and for integrating industrial aspects and international visions, to provide a reference for MTI education in China and beyond.
