Abstract

A newly developed genetic hybrid algorithm (GHA) is applied for complex nonlinear programming problems. The algorithm combines features from parallel programming, classical nonlinear optimization methodology and evolutionary computation utilizing a powerful accelerator technique. The algorithm compares well with other evolutionary programming techniques on a set of difficult mathematical programming problems. The test results add significant evidence on the potential of the general solution framework in solving complicated optimization problems. Some suggestions for further research are also provided.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show how intelligence techniques have been used in information management systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The results of a literature review on intelligence decision systems used in enterprise information management are analyzed. The intelligence techniques used in enterprise information management are briefly summarized.

Findings

Intelligence techniques are rapidly emerging as new tools in information management systems. Especially, intelligence techniques can be used to utilize the decision process of enterprises information management. These techniques can increase sensitiveness, flexibility and accuracy of information management systems. The hybrid systems that contain two or more intelligence techniques will be more used in the future.

Originality/value

The intelligence decision systems are briefly introduced and then a literature review is given to show how intelligence techniques have been used in information management systems.

A common problem that many universities face, especially with their specialized programs, is coordinating faculty availability and class offerings. The schedule is usually developed using paper and pencil after numerous iterations. As a result, the objectives of the program, such as course integration, length of course, and student workload, are most likely compromised in lieu of faculty availability. This chapter describes a multiple objective approach to this class assignment problem that considers the program’s objectives and faculty preferences. The results of applying this class assignment model to an Executive MBA (EMBA) program are presented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a comparative study of the various soft computing techniques and their application to optimum design of three‐phase induction motor design.

Design/methodology/approach

The need for energy conservation is increasing the requirements for increased efficiency levels of induction motor. It is therefore important to optimize the efficiency of induction motor in order to obtain significant energy savings. To optimize the efficiency, design of the induction motor has to be chosen appropriately. In this paper, computational intelligence techniques such as artificial neural network, fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm, differential evolution, evolutionary programming, particle swarm optimization, simulated annealing approach, radial basis function, and hybrid approach are applied to solve the induction motor design optimization problem.

Findings

These methods are tested on two sample motors and the results are compared and validated against the conventional Modified Hooke‐Jeeves design results and the effectiveness of each proposed method has also been illustrated in detail.

Originality/value

This comparison will be highly useful for the design engineers in selecting the best method for obtaining the optimal dimensions of three‐phase induction motor.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive self‐adaptive genetic algorithm (GA) based on fuzzy mechanism, aiming to improve both the optimizing capability and the convergence speed.

Design/methodology/approach

Many key factors that affect the performance of GAs are identified and analyzed, and their influences on the optimizing capability and the convergence speed are further elaborated, which prove to be very difficult to be described with explicit mathematical formulas. Therefore, a set of fuzzy rules are used to model these complicated relationships, in order to effectively guide the online self‐adaptive adjustments, such as changing the crossover and mutation probabilities, and thus to improve the optimizing capability and convergence speed.

Findings

Simulation results illustrates that, compared with a normal GA and another self‐adaptive GA based on explicit mathematical modeling of the key factors, the new GA is more advanced in terms of the optimizing capability and the convergence speed.

Originality/value

This paper develops a fuzzy‐rule‐based approach to describe the relationships between multiple GA parameters and online states, and the approach is useful in the design of a comprehensive self‐adaptive GA.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to solve the maintenance management problems of generating units under the reliability criterion.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem has been formulated as a combinatorial optimization task, with explicit and simultaneous treatment of multiple objectives: maximization of reliability, minimization of fuel costs and minimization of constraint violations. This paper formulates a general generator maintenance management (GMM) problem using a reliability criterion and a novel bio‐inspired search technique, namely, artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is applied to determine the optimal generator maintenance schedule.

Findings

A novel meta‐heuristic search technique based algorithm has been developed to determine the optimal maintenance schedule of generating units to improve the system reliability.

Originality/value

The contribution of the paper is that an efficient bio‐inspired algorithm based solution technique has been developed to solve a very important problem for a power utility, i.e. the economical and reliable operation of a power system.

Involvement in the effective design and use of computer‐based information systems is essential for the manager of the 1990s. To be most effective, systems must be designed for the requirements of the manager‐user. Too often there is a communication gap between managers who are too busy, uninterested or unwilling to become directly involved, on the one hand, and on the other, the consultant who is more usually engrossed in the special nature of the system. Abstract

Purpose

User-centered product designs have been attracting increasing attention, particularly in digital design. In interacting with the design support system, designers may face problems such as changing demands (e.g. unclear demands) and insufficient descriptions of these demands (e.g. data scarcity). The purpose of this paper is to build a design support system prototype for demonstrating the feasibility of meeting the high involvement of users in digital products.

Design/methodology/approach

Interactive evolutionary computation is applied.

Findings

A prototype of self-design greeting card system (SDGCS) was proposed. It provides professional design layouts, offers users numerous self-design models, and allows nonprofessional users to easily design greeting cards. The results of this study show that users were satisfied with the functionality, usefulness, and ease-of-use of the SDGCS.

Research limitations/implications

This study used digital card design as an example for demonstrating the feasibility of satisfying the unclear needs of uses, enabling users to design a digital card creatively and complete their designs quickly. However, the current system only supports the design of static objects and layout of card. And the evaluation sample size was small, which might affect generalizability of the findings.

Practical implications

In practice, greeting card web operators can image the feasible business models by providing the attraction of self-design functionalities.

Originality/value

In current human-centric marketing era, consumers have begun to request interaction with designers in creating the value of a product. However, very few previous studies have provided support for digital product self-design. This study demonstrated the feasibility of satisfying the needs of self-design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a hybridized technique for analyzing the behavior of an industrial system stochastically utilizing vague, imprecise, and uncertain data. The press unit of a paper mill situated in a northern part of India, producing 200 tons of paper per day, has been considered to demonstrate the proposed approach. Sensitivity analysis of system's behavior has also been done.

Design/methodology/approach

In the proposed approach, two important tools namely traditional Lambda‐Tau technique and genetic algorithm have been hybridized to build genetic algorithms‐based Lambda‐Tau (GABLT) technique to analyze the behavior of complex repairable industrial systems stochastically up to a desired degree of accuracy. This technique has been demonstrated by computing six well‐known reliability indices used for behavior analysis of the considered system in more promising way.

Findings

The behavior analysis results computed by GABLT technique have reduced region of prediction in comparison of existing Lambda‐Tau technique region, i.e. uncertainties involved in the analysis are reduced. Thus, it may be a more useful analysis tool to assess the current system conditions and involved uncertainties. The paper suggested an approach to improve the system's performance.

Originality/value

The paper suggests a hybridized technique for analyzing the stochastic behavior of an industrial subsystem by computing six well‐known reliability indices in the form of fuzzy membership function.

Abstract

Purpose

The puprose of this paper is to analyse the stochastic behavior of an industrial system using a novel hybridized technique NGABLT. The forming unit of a paper mill situated in north India producing approximately 200 tons of paper per day has been considered for analysis. The authors have made efforts to incorporate vague, ambiguous, imprecise and conflicting information quantified by fuzzy numbers.

Design/methodology/approach

Field data for repairable industrial systems are in the form of failures and repair rates are vague, ambiguous, qualitative and imprecise in nature. Using the data, system stochastic behavior in terms of six well‐known reliability indices is analysed considering some desired degree of accuracy. A practical case of forming unit in a paper mill is considered to compute the reliability indices by using NGABLT technique. Sensitive of system behavior is analysed through surface plots by taking different combinations of reliability indices. The findings have been supplied to the nearby industry for future course of action in maintenance.

Findings
