Abstract

Purpose

The point of departure for this viewpoint paper is the current development in which landscape architects are working towards achieving the United Nations sustainable development goals and the associated cross-cutting pledge “Leave No One Behind”. The sustainable development goals 3 and 11 can be achieved through landscape projects that are inclusive and health promoting, and the authors argue that an evidence-based design process is needed to ensure that project designs deliver what they promise. However, most landscape architects are not trained in evidence-based design and are therefore unsure of what can be used as evidence. A further challenge is the lack of relevant and applicable research evidence for design processes.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors present a process model for evidence-based health design in landscape architecture as an overall framework on which the authors base their arguments. The model includes four topics of evidence: target group, human health, environment and use of nature. For each topic, the authors present their view on what may be considered as evidence and where it can be found or generated. The study view is supported by a detailed presentation of where and how evidence was found and generated in a design project for an accessible and health-promoting forest trail for people with mobility disabilities.

Findings

The authors suggest a broad definition of evidence, and that the design process should draw on evidence from relevant research and practice disciplines. Evidence can be found in multiple sources, for example, scientific articles, theoretical works and design guidelines. It can also be generated by landscape architects themselves, for example, through landscape analyses and stakeholder workshops. The evidence should guide and support the landscape architect and not dictate the design process.

Practical implications

The authors hope that the knowledge provided on the evidence-based health design process and on where to collect or how to generate evidence may inspire landscape architects in their future health design projects.

Originality/value

People with mobility disabilities face many health challenges and should potentially be able to benefit from visiting green spaces. Design/methodology/approach

The discussion draws on relevant literature and recent research.

Findings

Evidence‐based design is having a major impact on planning and design of hospital facilities, and can play a similar role for other facility types.

Originality/value

Calls for evidence‐based design for healthcare facilities abound. This paper discusses important issues surrounding the implementation of an evidence‐based design approach that need to be considered for this approach to be successful in all types of facilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide information for facility managers, building owners, and designers to increase their knowledge of research vocabulary and methods. Using evidence‐based design criteria to add value to the workplace via facility management and design, and determine how to apply evidence‐based design criteria using the searchable database of InformeDesign® are presented and discussed.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a descriptive paper developed from literature related to research strategies and referenced sources about using research in the design process.

Findings

The paper provides a brief tutorial on research strategies for those readers who do not have a background in research strategies. Additionally, research summaries (RS) from InformeDesign are used to show how research can be integrated into the design process.

Research limitations/implications

The information contained in this paper is an overview of research processes and uses only one source for readers to access research articles.

Practical implications

Research findings are available from InformeDesign, an innovative web site that provides design and human behavior research transformed into RS from hundreds of research sources. At this time, there are over 1,300 RS in the searchable database; all are written in user‐friendly language.

Originality/value

Increased knowledge of basic research principles and analysis of research findings can enhance facility managers' understanding and evaluation and design consultants' creation of evidence‐based design solutions. Understanding the benefits of incorporating research into the decision‐making process is an additional outcome of this action.

Purpose

Young people receiving services for substance use problems often experience high rates of other psychosocial problems in addition to mental disorders. This has implications for design of effective interventions. There is a lack of concisely organised practical information to help organisations serving this population establish contextually relevant and rigorous approaches to the design of evidence‐based interventions. This paper aims to focus on these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing on literature from clinical and implementation science, this paper describes a new approach to the development and implementation of evidence‐based practice (EBP). Contributions of innovators, early adopters, evaluators, and other scholars are reviewed and synthesized.

Findings

Traditional approaches to EBP relying on manualised programs targeting discrete diagnoses have not yielded meaningful progress in the dissemination of EBP to services that specialise in treatment and support for young people experiencing complex psychosocial needs. Recent initiatives are moving away from reliance on manualised programs and adopting a modular practice elements approach that enables maximum flexibility in responding to the unique needs of individual clients. This approach has potential to mitigate barriers to implementation of EBP in resource poor environments.

Originality/value

The complexity of needs presented by young people with dual mental health and substance use problems is increasingly recognised, but there is little information available that supports the formulation evidence‐based interventions that directly address this complexity. This paper applies knowledge from research to the practical challenges faced by practice leaders in real‐world services.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore conceptual and practical links between performance measurement and evidence‐based library and information practice (EBLIP) and to identify lessons to be learned from evidence‐based healthcare.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents a selective review of key writings in EBLIP for reference to performance measurement.

Findings

The paper finds that performance measurement may variously be viewed as one small, but essential, stage of EBLIP or an overarching approach to utilisation of data of which research‐derived evidence is a single source

Research limitations/implications

Similarities and potential linkages between the two activities are currently underdeveloped and need to be explored through rigorous empirical research.

Practical implications

The stages of EBLIP are modelled in relation to a single case study of reference checking.

Originality/value

This is the first article to develop explicit links between these two areas of information practice, following in passim mentions at previous conferences.

Abstract

Purpose

A topic currently receiving significant academic and practitioner attention is called evidence-based management. The purpose of this paper is to suggest that this approach is sometimes over-sold and may be a fad. Additionally, evidence-based management fails to fully recognize the importance of tacit knowledge, what Kahneman calls system 1. Evidence-based management does provide tools to better use what Kahneman calls system 2, rationality. Decision-makers need to take advantage of both rational and beyond rational processes.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an essay, it is not a report of a study. At this point in time, this paper needs thinking, reflection, pondering, more than a data-based study.

Findings

Advocates promote evidence-based management in part to help avoid fads, yet evidence-based management itself has many of the characteristics of a fad. Evidence-based management is based on an objective rational view of the world and suggests highly rational methods of decision-making. However, a rational fact-based might not give sufficient credit to instinct and feelings. Decision-makers should take into account facts, evidence, when making decisions, but not ignore intuition, hunches and feelings. This study is learning that decisions use a galaxy of approaches, with both cognitive and affective flexibility.

Research limitations/implications

As with any opinion-based paper, this lacks empirical support. Proponents ask us to believe in evidence-based management. Neither we, the authors of this paper, nor the proponents of evidence-based management can empirically support the ideas offered. An additional limitation is that the paper is written in one language, English. Translation into another language might yield different meanings.

Practical implications

There are advantages for scholars and practitioners to look at the best available evidence. There can be disadvantages in overlooking non-quantifiable factors.

Social implications

Those who use evidence-based management should also take into account feelings, ethics, aesthetics, creativity, for the betterment of society. To solve wicked problems one needs more than facts and rational analysis.

Originality/value

The overwhelming majority of those writing about evidence-based management are supporters. This study offers a different view. This paper brings new ideas and new thinking to both the extensive fad literature and the huge evidence-based management literature. Evidence-based management is discussed widely. Google Scholar lists more than two million papers in 2019, 2020 and 2021 on evidence-based management. Readers of this journal should critically evaluate this popular set of ideas.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to trace the relationship between the evidence-based design (EBD) process and decision-making during the architectural design process, the barriers to informing health-care architects and possible methods to overcome these barriers.

Design/methodology/approach

This study aims to explore the barriers to the EBD process during the design process by reviewing the relevant literature and future steps to overcome these barriers and support design decisions.

Findings

The study shows that EBD is a relevant, useful tool for providing evidence that positively affects design decisions. This study divides EBD barriers into simple barriers and complex barriers, depending on the nature of the barrier. Additionally, methods to overcome these barriers are discussed to ensure the best use of EBD findings with a significant impact on health-care design decisions, as they are core elements in informing architects, especially when combined with the traditional design process. This study investigates how likely it is for the EBD to contribute optimally to design decisions depending on architects’ skills and cooperation with researchers.

Originality/value

This study can apprize health-care architects of the need to consider the role of EBD in improving the quality of design decisions, and the importance of combining EBD with the traditional design process to implement optimal design decisions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose and demonstrate an evidence‐based scenario design framework for assessment‐based computer games.

Design/methodology/approach

The evidence‐based scenario design framework is presented and demonstrated by using BELLA, a new assessment‐based gaming environment aimed at supporting student learning of vocabulary and math. BELLA integrates assessment and learning into an interactive gaming system that includes written conversations, math activities, oral and written feedback in both English and Spanish, and a visible psychometric model that is used to adaptively select activities as well as feedback levels. This paper also reports on a usability study carried out in a public middle school in New York City.

Findings

The evidence‐based, scenario design framework proves to be instrumental in helping combine game and assessment requirements. BELLA demonstrates how advances in artificial intelligence in education, cognitive science, educational measurement, and video games can be harnessed and integrated into valid instructional tools for the classroom.

Research limitations/implications

This paper provides initial evidence of the potential of these kinds of assessment‐based gaming tools to enhance teaching and learning. Future work involves exploring student learning effects in randomized controlled studies and comparing the internal assessment models to more traditional assessment instruments.

Originality/value

BELLA is the first step toward achieving engaging, assessment‐based, gaming environments for a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)‐related areas with explicit support for English language learners.

Abstract

Purpose

New Zealand building code may be serving its purpose to an extent, there is still a need to develop a framework to improve the use and application of building code for better building performance and services. This study aims to validate the identified parameters in the developed framework to improve building code practice in New Zealand.

Design/methodology/approach

Subject matter experts interview was conducted with key stakeholders that use building code, standards and other associated compliance documents.

Findings

The findings from this study establish the importance of improving the building code, and the efficacy of validated framework helps to identify the areas with the most pressing needs within the building regulatory system. All the subject matter experts unanimously agreed on educating and training the building code users. Besides, the validated framework will enable the policy decision-makers in the building regulatory system to promote the use of building code and the utilisation of its potentials in reducing disaster while increasing the built environment resilience. The study concludes that the designed framework will create more robust strategy implementations to enhance innovative solutions embedded in performance-based building code.

Originality/value

This study originality centres on the practical application of an evidence-based framework for performance-based building code, standards and other related compliance documents.

The purpose of this paper is to provide commentary on Armstrong, Du, Green and Graefe’s (this issue) article.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on reading and thinking about Armstrong et al.’s article.

Findings

One appealing way that advertising practice can be evidence-based is by applying dependable generalizations about what makes for effective ads. Armstrong et al.’s article offers data concerning the application of Armstrong’s persuasive advertising: Evidence-Based Principles (2010) persuasion principles. The article does not provide convincing evidence for the predictive validity of the principles, but it does offer a clear proof-of-concept demonstration of the feasibility of principles-based advertising assessment.

Originality/value

The paper’s value lies in its clarification of what claims Armstrong et al.’s data do and do not underwrite.
